It’s actually a subsection in a television and radio broadcast law so I’m not sure how they’d do that. Maybe re-write the electoral act instead.

There is no truth in political advertising law, so yes they can say whatever they want.

It used to be the job of the fourth estate to hold the political class accountable for what they say, but these days they seem to consider themselves insiders barracking for a horse race.

I think some of the independents have had something to say about that but I’m not sure which one it was now. Possibly Zoe Daniel? A couple of others had fake corflutes that made them look like greens candidates at one point too, they weren’t officially authorised by anyone though.

The only requirements for election advertising is that it is authorised by whoever is creating it, and council by-laws govern things like corflutes and when and where they can be put on peoples fences and stuff.
