Official Match Thread Season 35, Round 2 - Sin City Swamprats v Gold City Royals @ Underground Stadium

Both the Sin City Swamprats and Gold Coast City Royals made finals, but it was a ‘blink and you miss it’ type scenario. The Royals secured a healthy fourth spot on the ladder, but unfortunately forgot to come back from the Round 13 bye and bowed out in straight sets. The Swamprats went in with nothing to lose coming eighth, and lose they did, bowing out to East Side Phoenix by five goals, the same team that would roll the Royals in the semi-finals.

OFF-SEASON

Unless you have been living under a rock, it would have been impossible to miss the Royals’ off-season. It was admittedly bloody impressive, but no doubt a few people might enter the season with dislocated shoulders from all the backpatting. They brought in Moz who was quick to point out the flaws in his past club relationship, as well as hotchilli from the Roys and Golumless from the Wonders. Then adding an unprecedented FIVE rookies was deserving of plaudits. Big props to nahnah on that one. They did lose some serious quality such as The Filth Wizard and PMBangers who is another player in the competition.

Speaking of living under a rock, it might well have been the Swamprats, who made just the one straight transaction over the off-season. With spook headed to the Royals, they grabbed spookism back in a great return.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

These sides first met in Season 16, and since then have played 32 times. The Royals have won 18 of those 32, as well as having a draw way back in Season 19. Gold City Royals also won their only SFA flag in Season 30, against the Swamprats winning by 33 points. Since that match, the Swamprats have one four of the past five meetings, with the only loss being by a single point.

KEY MATCHUP

Golumless vs. okeydoke7

In case you missed it, okeydoke has kicked a few goals in his career. Unsure? Just ask him. Anyway, the past Dragon-Wonder-Hawk-Royal-Gumbie-Demon-Bomber player is up against his former side, though that is the case most weeks. Regardless, I’m sure he can put the sentimentalities behind him and have his eyes on the prize of reaching 1000 goals this season. This week it will be up to Golumless to stop him, and it could be the key to the result.

ROUND 1

The okeydoke7 Swamprats were not able to overcome a fierce Dragons side despite the modest full-forward’s lazy nine-goal haul. He booted 9.5 from 14 kicks but had little support aside from sataris (three goals) on the scoring front. The Royals on the other hand, picked up a 16-point victory over East Side Phoenix. They lead by as much as 52 points at the final break before packing it in and letting precious percentage go to waste, regardless, they walked away with the four points.

FUN FACT:

Power Raid becomes the first player to play 30 matches in this head-to-head, and fascinatingly, has played two for the Royals, and what will be 28 for the Swamprats. He is one of five players to have played for both sides and racked up 20 games in the process.

The match will also mark Kennedy Parker having played exactly 11 games apiece for each side against the other.

MILESTONES:

Okeydoke7 needs just 29 goals in the match to overtake The Filth Wizard’s record of 45 majors in the head-to-head between the sides.

PREDICTION:

The team that kicks the highest score will win.
