John Madden: Super Bowl call will “torment” Pete Carroll forever

Seahawks Pete Carroll acknowledged after the Super Bowl that he’d always regret the decision to pass at the goal line rather than run.

That’s almost easy to say now, at a time when he’s trying to insulate the coordinator who called the play, and the quarterback who threw the game-losing interception.

But one of the best coaches the game has ever known said the memory won’t get any easier with time.

That will torment him forever,” Hall of Famer John Madden told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. “Winning one game is hard. Getting to the Super Bowl is hard. Then getting that close and losing has to be tough, because we only remember the winners of the Super Bowl.

“One of the biggest gaps in sports is the difference between the winning and losing teams of the Super Bowl. They don’t invite the losing team to the White House. They don’t have parades for them. They don’t throw confetti on them.

“Does it haunt you? Hell yes, it haunts you. I’m still haunted by some championship games.”

Madden’s Raiders lost five conference championship games in seven years, nearly taking the pleasure out of finally winning one.

But he doubts that Carroll having won one will take the sting away from the chance at a second.

Seahawks.com's John Boyle believes it will be a "tough challenge" for WR Chris Matthews to climb the depth chart.

Despite his Super Bowl heroics, Matthews is still clearly behind Jimmy Graham, Jermaine Kearse and Doug Baldwin on the target totem pole, and he could find himself behind rookie Tyler Lockett as well. At 6-foot-5, Matthews could be a good fit for the outside receiver role occupied by Kearse, but he will need a very strong training camp to earn a significant role early in the season.

Baldwin's position will be under threat - Graham and Kearse are safe obviously, but Baldwin needs to back up his attitude on the field.

Updating a previous item, Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson suffered a sprained ankle in the preseason opener.

Coach Pete Carroll confirmed the ankle was not broken, but conceded "it's going to be a little bit" before Jackson returns. Considering Jackson had to be carted off the field, a sprained ankle is a good result. R.J. Archer will fill in as Russell Wilson's backup while Jackson is down.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Seahawks SS Kam Chancellor is prepared to extend his holdout into the regular season.

Per Schefter, Chancellor is "not close to budging." Coach Pete Carroll says the sides have maintained an open dialogue, but Chancellor isn't buying whatever the Seahawks are selling. With FS Earl Thomas still rehabbing his shoulder injury, Chancellor isn't entirely without leverage, but he's unlikely to earn anything other than a ceremonial raise or token guarantee.

Former Seahawks fullback and NFL Network analyst Michael Robinson said SS Kam Chancellor is willing to sit out the entire season.

"From what I know of the situation, yeah," Robinson said. "He’s dug in. He really feels that they have the ability to pay him." The Seahawks have been in talks with Chancellor, but there hasn't been any progress with his contract situation. Chancellor would forfeit more than $264,000 per game if his holdout carries into the regular season.

Jesus Christ I'm excited about our offensive unit.

- 88. Once the playbook opens up it's going to be interesting, particularly with the so-called Bash Bros (Graham and Willson). Feel like we're going to run a lot of 2WR-2TE-1RB or 1WR-2TE-2RB sets, with the latter featuring a lot in the PA game. KC game showed he can play.
- 16. Jesus Christ Lockett is like watching Harvin all over again. Feel like Bevell may have thrown out the Harvin element of the playbook but now must surely be digging through the trash to get it again.
- The O-line. It's a basketcase, but Gilliam has really stepped up and there's still the Mathis chance. If we somehow land Mathis then our OL looks like Okung, Mathis, Nowak/Jeanpierre, Sweezy, Gilliam and that ain't too shabby at all.

Defense is hard to get a read with Kam holding out and still no Earl or Sherm. Wasn't happy with Williams getting burnt though. Feel like CB2 is potentially open for competition.

Tyler Lockett returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown and added a 10-yard reception in Saturday’s preseason win over the Chargers.

The 67-yard score was his second of the preseason. Though Lockett hasn’t been featured much on offense (four catches for 52 yards), he’s already an elite contributor on special teams. Expect him to handle most of Seattle’s return duties this year.

Think he will start to get involved in the WR corps too. Perfect size for a slot guy with potential for Harvin-esque wrinkles.

With Jeanpierre being released, it looks like we are going into the season with Nowak as our starter at center. I would have preferred to have Jeanpierre as back up but Pete and Cable are showing a lot of faith in Nowak. I haven't seen any of the pre season games so I don't know how he has done but Jeanpierre was decent when Unger was injured so to have pushed him out Nowak must have some ability.

That pass was pretty as **** but it was the Raiders 2nd string.

I think Lockett will provide some great wrinkles but he will be worked into the offense.

We haven't seen many 2TE packages, almost no Beast and very little PA.

Right now our WRs:
Dougie B (#1 but probably best as a #2)
Kearse (Mr Dropsie himself)
Matthews (closest thing to a possession receiver)
Lockett (KR/PR/slot)
Lockette (depth/ST)
Richardson (PUP)

Lockett will be huge on ST but he isn't going to be gamebreaking as a receiver early. That said it will depend upon how creative Bevell is.

They'll probably bring back the jet sweep.
God I hope so. It's such a huge wrinkle at the pro level, which when you think that defenses have to key on Graham and Lynch as well...
