Simon Lloyd??. A ton of afl experience!. 98-04 at hawthorn playing a number of roles eg. Development manager, development coach, also psychologist and assistant coach at box hill. 05-08 high performance manager and again psychologist. Currently at fremantle been there since 2010. Previously managed there development academy in 09.

The coaches I would look at would be
- Stuart Dew (obviously successful at Swans)
- Guy McKenna (unlucky to be sacked, quality coach)
- Blake Caracella (apparently is Chris Scott's right hand man, so has some experience)
- Leigh Tudor (just generally heard he is a good coach)
- Mark Harvey (Someone with Essendon DNA)
- Brendan Bolton (I reckon he will be Carlton coach in 2016).
May be controversial but I would go with Guy McKenna. Game at gold Coast last year was really attacking with some quality defense as well and was great to watch. Would suit our list.

Most important quality for me is not having this. Has not worked and need someone who doesn't have a bleeding heart for the club.

Has been an assistant since 2007. At Collingwood until 2009, and at the Cats since 2010.

I agree. Yes Mark Harvey is an Essendon man but the question would be "will he bring anything different to the club that hasn't been there this year"

The other demerit against Harvey is: No.

I do love how appointing the best available coach simply becomes a raid of the current premier.

Look at the top 25 players that West Coats and the Dogs have compiled. That is the primary reason they are good. There is no magic tonic.

Both clubs raided the reigning premier as well though. Of course you need personnel; I'm not sure anyone's suggesting that you don't, but you also need the right leadership to allow it to flourish.

Yet the current coach is one of the five greatest Essendon players of all time, with two flags, a brownlow, & norm smith medal and a business degree yet produces the current rubbish that isn't even fit for local footy.
Not the point....Hird's shortfalls are obvious, it's why we are having this discussion. My question is why do people want Bolton as the senior coach?

Being the greatest assistant in the world doesn't necessarily mean you can succeed as a senior coach, why do so many think Bolton will?

Because he has extensive experience as an assistant coach and has proven he can do the job on game day. Why wouldn't you want a coach like that?

These are the only two options that i'd even entertain on your list, i wouldn't touch Bluey with a ten foot pole, if you can't or won't discipline players for breaking the rules, you don't deserve to coach at the top level. I refuse to believe he didn't know players were doing drugs and drinking alcohol during the season. It's a credit to Rodney for the job he has done in getting some discipline into his team, and have them finally playing Football.

Edit: Let me talk about my choices here, i think we need someone who is NOT from Essendon, they need have have finals experience, Premiership experience preferred.
