Over the course of the season an issue that has become increasingly discussed in the Sweet FA is the number of people posting in match threads where they don't belong. Gatecrashers. The reasons these intrusions occur may vary: some get tagged in and are merely answering a question. Others pop into the occasional thread to stir up a mate with a witty one-liner. Then there are those that are systematically forcing their will upon others, clogging up match threads with rubbish that detracts from the match at hand.

There are a handful of people that come to mind as the most frequent infringers of this activity, and so as we like to do at Serial Stats...we crunched some numbers. Whilst accumulating match thread data for the S30 List Assessment & Posting Stats, I also kept track of which posters were in threads where they didn't belong. The numbers were startling.

One thing I had to take into account though was the sim posters. They seemed over-represented in the numbers, and with good reason: with the exception of philreich in the Round 8 Roys vs. Swamprats match thread, all sim posters were not participants in the thread. So I identified which sim posters were allocation to each thread, and then allowed them fifteen posts to publish the sim results, and took this off their total. Why fifteen? A posted sim requires a minimum of ten posts (intro + two posts per quarter + match summary), and I allowed for another five posts for announcing the time of the match and for stretching the game out for the sake of tension. Anything beyond that is unadulterated posturing. A sim poster like Dingster is particularly efficient: of the 13 sims he has posted this season, he kept under fifteen posts seven times.

So let's go have a look at some numbers:

There have been 62,084 match thread posts over the first eight rounds from the listed teams in each match thread. In that time there has been 2,185 posts from Gatecrashers. That's just over 3.4% of all posts. Is that too much? Maybe.

142 posters have appeared in match threads that they do not belong in. That's nearly half the league!

The least amount of Gatecrashers in a match thread this season is five. This occurred in the Round 7 match between the Coney Island Warriors and Mt. Buller Demons. This is also the match thread with the least amount of Gatecrashed posts, with only nine.

The flip side of the coin occurred during the Round 3 match thread between the Baghdad Bombers and Dragons FFC, when thirty-seven posters who were not Bombers or Dragons decided they needed to post in there, combining for a total of 298 posts.

Incredibly that wasn't the most amount of Gatecrashed posts in a match thread this season. That occurred in the Round 4 match thread between the Gold City Royals and Las Vegas Bears, when thirty-six Gatecrashers combined for 338 posts!

Dragons FFC player A Swallow (576 posts) is the person with the most match thread posts in Season 30 NOT to have Gatecrashed another match thread.

Several non-listed players were included in this data set. You may be familiar with such names as Shaz from Karratha, BoomerAndy and Not TJASTA.

Now, for the individuals. I have two numbers compiled for each Gatecrasher: the number of match threads they've crashed, and the number of total posts in match threads where they don't belong. I've then used a Secret Serial formula to apply a weighting for the impact that Gatecrasher is having on the league this season. Over the course of this week I will count down the culprits, starting from #20.

Standby.

Uncle Tony, I believe the SFA is now relying on your statistical skills and empathic abilities to take serial_thrilla by the hand and lead him to a land where attention whoring is abolished.

Mate I would genuinely love to. Right now I am caught up trying to find some more information for DemonJim who seems to be indicating he lost a lot of "likes" when Big Footy deleted a bunch of posts. Integrity of data is incredibly important to me so that will be my major focus and then after that I will help mentor serial_thrilla

Meh. Just assure DemonGymkhana he really came 2nd.

That is what he has been committed to over a long time in the game. He is a generous and loving soul but coming 4th is TDC #BobCarolTed&Alice territory and Jim is a traditional missionary sort of bloke.

Do you know there is nothing obliging anyone to read any thread? You can totally avoid those that do not interest you.

How about you give the real number of posts in the SFA? Instead of just guessing and making up a number!

When Grand Uncle Horace sees a thread authored by me he can't click it quick enough. Particularly a topic such as this where he knows he'll be getting mentioned at some point. ;)

Tbh I just don’t really give a f*ck about any of the other match threads, but I’ll claim this as an accolade in any case.

Understandable mate. You are too busy flying a fighter jet and playing beach volleyball.

Well lookity, look. Cocoa_Pops is all exercised and sadly this is not for the first time.

I see he had limp crack. (he needs rehab) "Rats", I could not give one, esp about a thread posted by a person whose Av is a mere crowd scene extra on Popeye or The Bobby Simpersons.

Oh dear. You may want to call Big Nurse and ask for your morning meds; you're becoming incoherent again.

That’s exactly right. Though the beach volleyball has been on hold due to social distancing requirements.
