Rule 24 - No Ball. Section 6.

I'm sure over the years, many runs have either been added or missed because people don't understand the rules...or bowlers have got away with murder.

My understanding was 1 to no-balls, 4 to leg byes...??

woulda thought so too

13. Runs resulting from a No ball - how scored
The one run penalty for a No ball shall be scored as a No ball extra. If other penalty runs have been awarded to either side, these shall be scored as in Law 42.17 (Penalty runs). Any runs completed by the batsmen or a boundary allowance shall be credited to the striker if the ball has been struck by the bat; otherwise they also shall be scored as No ball extras.
Apart from any award of a 5 run penalty, all runs resulting from a No ball, whether as No ball extras or credited to the striker, shall be debited against the bowler

Yeah, i read that one, 2 things concern me about my interpretation.

"No Ball Extras" got me, what does that mean? As well as "All runs resulting from a No Ball,..., shall be debited against the bowler". I'd take that as a leg bye off a no-ball is to the bowler.

The same thing goes with the wides then, if its a wide and goes for 4, its 4 wides, plus the one penalty, so 5 runs. Not one wide and 4 byes.

The wording is the same in the wide rule, so i assumed a no ball, if it went for 4 byes, would be 4 no-balls??

If a No Ball or Wide goes for four wouldn't that be 5 No Balls or Wides?

Yes it would, but FBP asked about a no-ball going for 4 leg byes off the body

If thats the case doona, surely you must assume that the same rule applies for leg byes as normal byes.

So a No-ball which goes beyond the keeper for 4 is 5 No-balls. Is a leg bye the same...all runs taken by the bowler?

I'd reckon that the four would go down as leg byes and that the no ball would be recorded against the bowler. That's how I'd score it. A red do for the bowler in a circle to indicate when the no ball and byes then a red four in the byes column and one no ball.

Maybe I'm wrong though, but should it happen at Broadford, that's how I'll be scoring it until I'm notified any further.

Thats how I thought it was...but reading the rules, I'm starting to think that all the runs need to go against the bowler?

If I were scoring, thats how i would see it, because a no ball doesn't always mean that the keeper can't stop it. So why should the bowler be punished 4 byes when the keeper stuffs up. Should go against him. So i'd agree that 1 no ball, and 4 to the byes.

What about wides? How often have you written 5 wides? Because thats what it is according to the rules. 1 run penalty in addition to any score made. All runs go against the bowler. A wide that goes for 4 is 5 wides.

Have scored 5 wides on many occasions this season FBP. Ground here lightning fast. Similar I put a red four in a circle for the bowler and then add 5 to the wides column.

On the byes situation, no ball and wides totally different.. Wides is 1 wide plus 1 per run upto 5 wides if it goes for 4.. Can't have byes, leg byes or any other runs if wide is called, and of story..

For a no ball, 1 extra against the bowler plus any other score if applicable.. Runs to batsman, or byes or leg byes to the sundries (and not bowlers figures) if signalled, that would be my take on it anyhow??

Thats exactly how I thought the no-balls was too. But once again, read the rules. THe wording isn't that clear cut.

Only going from top of my head, but where you refer to "any runs being scored" i think it may be referring to any earlier rule that states "runs" are when a batsman hits the ball and takes a run, not when the batsman physically run the length of the pitch..
So when a batsman hits runs from the no-ball it is added to the bowlers figures only with the 1 penalty run.
But when the batsmen physically run a bye or legbye it wont be added to bowlers stats..
I stand to be corrected, but this may be the answer to your technicallity that you cant explain??

Having looked a bit closer at rules.. I believe you cannot have bye or leg byes from a no-ball.. if its is not runs and the batsmen run it is added to the noball extras in the same way as wides..
Doesn't make total sense but it seems them are the rules of our great game!!

Hi FBP,

A no ball that is scored off from the bat is recorded as runs to the batsman plus 1 no ball. If the batsman take runs from a no ball which is not hit by the bat ie. what would normally be byes or leg byes - all runs are recorded as no balls - so a no ball deflecting from the pad and going to the boundary is recorded as 5 no balls.
Cheers,
Ric.

LOL. My tip is the Fatman sent down a no-ball that went for four leg byes and an umpy that obviously knew his sh1t nicked him for five runs.
FBP, not quite knowing his sh1t, argued vehemently that only one of those runs should have been recorded against him.
FBP vowed he wouldn't rest until he got to the bottom of it.
Well, now it appears he has.

Think I may fall into that category Baz miss me cricket like you wouldnt believe - opinions are like a$$holes mate we've all got em so keep contributing to this forum as thats what its all about :thumbsu:

Mark Nicholls back for one game only and the Tiges are in with a chance to upset Avenel, Seymour all out when 9 down with Kempy rolling up late, Davern got a 50, McLeod defiantely right up there with the best bats Ive seen this year, and jazzy and the BIGSHOW upset (again) . . . . . sure has been a big weekend in the SDCA :D

thats what i reakon doon.
i remember my first country week as a tender 16 yo, and had the big doon take me under his wing. good times.
howd the mo end up mate. mine went well but by the time beard-cember rolled around, i was pretty keen to gt rid of it.

Good times indeed Baz, a lot of fond memories from my playing days, only do the umpiring thing now to catch up with all those former opponents as thats what ya miss most i reckon is the friendships made. Unfortunately the new breed of cricketers wont experience those long sessions back at opposition rooms as hardly anyone stays back longer than the 15-20 mins now that they feel obliged (or embarrased into) by captains :(

Mo ended up good, got about $450 for the cause which was fantastic, but back to normality now and me kids enjoy the nonprickly face.

Are the very strong whispers that Vaguey has quit the committee of TCC true?

Lego Man, can you fill us in? :D ;)

Yes it is infact true that for the first time in living memory Leigh Vague is not on the committee of the TCC. Leigh said "that whilst he would continue to support the club in every way possible he was not prepared to have any official role with a club that refused to select Joe Pollock for the 06/07 GF". I think that my selection in A Grade may have also been a factor however when questioned about this vaguey refused to comment other than to say "it will all be in my book".:D:thumbsu:

Hey Sol, nah Gascoyne has pulled the pin on it a couple of years back. Was too hard to get a team together. Although looking at the tallent, if the best side was put together, it would be handy enough to compete.

When is it?
