We have trialed other options for competitions, such as the SPC; while it was not a home-run, I do feel that it showed a lot of promise and is more down the alley of what direction I feel the league should be going when it comes to alternate competitions.

Anything even remotely related to the Sweet F.A is a better option. Have The Filth Wizard and Tarkyn_24 face off in a goal-kicking competition. Face all these teams off. Anything.

When State of Origin was dead in the water, before Cloud dragged its carcass out, there was a very vocal minority who made a fuss about it. You could almost book the date of when they would pipe up about it too. IIRC, both The Filth Wizard and myself had so little faith and confidence in it that we both gave explicit permission for those who were upset to run it. He is right, it always fades.

That is not to say that none of these other alternatives won't either, but at least they will have a slither of the Sweet F.A about them.

Even the SPC went gangbusters in the first couple of rounds, near enough the busiest I've seen an off season series start but by the end it was a ghost town.

It's not that it's a big deal, SOO is a nice off season distraction but it's not the blockbuster every new generation hopes it will be. A side carnival with the drafted teams could run quite easily alongside it.

Off season stuff is tough to maintain when the novelty runs out, and running these concurrently solves three problems:

1) it's keeps things fresh, as each would only be done once a year instead of twice

2) still gives people the IRL SoS fix they have been asking for

3) gives people a draft, something we have been hounded about for years. Draft is unviable for the regular league due to how we recruit, so it's a good compromise

In terms of how, lightning sudden death elimination comp.

Definitely. A longer Christmas break with SOO suits and then the mid year break can afford to be a little shorter and relaxed.

Theoretically you could run the Sweet FA tour exclusively mid-year to avoid people overheating and to take advantage of mid season AFL traffic and avoid dead zone Christmas team forums.
