May I ask why Lyndale so low?
I only can see them improving from last year! They just missed finals last year and were competitive nearly every game! Yes they exceeded expectations but so did CPL, and look where there heading, I rekon they will surprise some people.

Looking at clearances, read and buntine cleared to afl qld. Big outs for Lyndale. Have they recruited well?
If you look again, there actually being cleared to go back to Lyndale! Pending atm though.
Looks like there's been a few clearances for them.

Lyndale may have just missed finals, but they also finished 7th, with Black Rock finishing underneath them in 8th. I see Black Rock being the big improvers this year should they not suffer the same injury troubles they had last year, which is why I have put Lyndale further down in 8th.

Really the spots between 4-8 could go anyway. Sandown, Black Rock, Ashwood and Lyndale were at similar strength last year...I have no idea on South Yarra, I simply based my guess on how those who have dropped down from division 2 to 3 have performed over the last 3 years, so based on that they would slot in there as well.

Black rock's depth was tested last year and was proven to be terrible, going by their mammoth losses to Sandown and doveton in the first half of the year. What happens if they get injuries again?

On another note, doesn't look like Sandown have picked up anyone of note, and have been flying under the radar nicely. Anyone want to comment on how they think the cobras will go this year?

They had 19 injuries as of Round 7, that's not a test of depth, that's a decimation of depth and I doubt any club would do well with that many out in both seniors and reserves.

I posted this a couple pages back. A comparison of results from the start of the season and against the same teams at the end of the season to highlight what injuries did to them.

First half of the season
Round 5 - Lost to Dovton by 97 points
Round 6 - Lost to Sandown by 161 points
Round 7 - Lost to Carrum by 77 points
Round 8 - Lost to Ashwood by 8 points
Accumulative Margin: -343

Second half of the season
Round 14 - Lost to Dovton by 52 points
Round 15 - Defeated Sandown by 5 points
Round 16 - Lost to Carrum by 16 points
Round 17 - Defeated Ashwood by 63 points
Accumulative Margin: 0

They are a decent team at full strength. If their first half of the seasons results were the same as their second half results...they would of finished up on 10 wins, enough for them to finish outright 5th. Which is also why I have them as 5th on my ladder prediction.

Yep. It was mentioned on the forums last year by a couple of people that they had 15-18 players out. Then when they played us I was told by a Black Rock official that they had 19 players out from things ranging from hamstring strains to appendicitis.

He said they were all seniors...i dont know about that, but even if it was 10 seniors and 9 reserves that is still a big hit.

Our first encounter against Black Rock was a dry day and we were told they had 9-10 senior players out. We won by 161 points.
Our next encounter was a very windy wet day and was scrappy footy. They had 8 changes from the previous side we met earlier. Like alot of our games in 2013, we were wasteful in front of goal and although had more scoring shots, we lost by 9 points.

I'm interested into what sort of crowd is expected on Friday Night at Hallam?

Are they the only SFL club with Friday night matches?

Last year it was our kicking efficiency infront of goal that killed us.
Both times against CPL we had more scoring shots and both times we went down to them by 3 points. We had the 3rd highest percentage last year, just couldn't get enough W's on the board.

This year we (like all clubs by the sounds of it) have had a really good preseason, looking to promote players from our reserves, who for the last 2 years have dropped only a handful of games.

We have added some more pace to the side with the inclusion of Cranbourne half fwd / onballer Frank Martinicchio who kicked 5 goals in a half against Hallam in our Praccy game. Also picked up Divy 1 East Malvern players in Ben Adams & Brad Hemphill who have fit nicely into the backline. Leigh Robinson is another player who has had a solid preseason and is a nice addition to our midfield.
We have lost a few like all clubs (Mitch Gersbeck, Lucas Ligt, Shane Adams, Leigh Holroyd & James Tate), but i think we are a much more settled team in 2014.

I think it will be a very tight year and I hope we can get back to be a part of the Finals action.

My Prediction for the Ladder is;

Carrum Patterson Lakes - With the amount of recruits (and quality of) its hard to not have them placed here. Great facilities, definitely the benchmark. Sandown - Obviously very bias here. Really good additions, been a great preseason with some natural growth of some of our younger players. Will be a very quick side.
Lyndale - Very competitive last year. Addition of some Premiership SD boys in Clappers, Zemlinsky, Ho-Peng. Good to see Ready & Ordine back.
Dandenong - Big loss in losing Moss and a couple of others. Picked up kiki who on his day can provide enough headaches for the backline.
Black Rock - From what I have heard, alot of players on the track. Surely will not be as plagued by injury as 2013.
Mt Waverley - Now Coached by Jarrod Wilkin, might be an experimental year for him. Handy addition in Ben Stacey who will have improved miles since playing at Montrose.
Ashwood - Picked up a few from the EFL and not lost anyone of note. IMO were very lucky to make finals last year with a bottom 4 Percentage of only 94.62%
South Yarra - Met the coach at the coaches and captains night. Very nice fella and very positive and also realistic I think they will be competetive this year, but take awhile before they build a winning culture.
Hallam - Very young having played them in the Praccy game. Still need to mature as a club.
Endeavour Hills - New coach in Steve Muscat who knows divy 3 very well. Lost 9 with 7 coming to the club. Still need to land a couple of big signings and lack height.

This is only My opinion and would love to be proven wrong.

Ladder predictions aside I think it will be a very tight year this year. Carrum should finish on top this year, but below that from 2nd-8th i reckon will be really tight and we are going to see alot of close games between those teams. Add a couple of Hallam and Endeavour Hills wins to the mix and anything could happen. Possibly similar to what Division 2 saw last year with 1 win seperating 3rd-6th

I think they will draw a decent crowd, at least for this first one. They have 5 Friday night games this year, from a revenue perspective i think its a really good move. They pretty much have exclusivity as being the only senior football game on in the south eastern suburbs on a Friday Night all of those nights. So they will be everyones only option to see a 2nd local footy game on the weekend in full, bar a couple of Sunday games.

I would also expect to see every coach and his dog there this Friday night.

i'll be lining up for south yarra fri at hallam but how does a club who from what i've read been very unsuccessful on field have a ground with full lighting? my thinking is a club with full lighting is a financially successful club which in turn usually translates to something better then 2nd last in div 3 sfl...

The lights have been there for a few years now, a long time before there was a senior team. I played under lights there 15+ years ago in juniors.
They have a strong cricket club that plays night games, juniors, masters and a women's team all using the ground also.

Yeh as Tigersman said its quite a big club. Big junior footy club, superrules club, masters footy club, womens footy club and cricket club as well. Seniors only came to be just recently. I am sure all of the clubs would of chipped in to get the lights up.

good stuff then

i read they had a fair bit of council help which is fine but they must have decent lights pre existing to get to this point

either way we're all looking forward to friday night

How have south Yarra been travelling in the pre season?

not the best bloke to ask - i went to training 4 times pre xmas and haven't been back since but played all the praccy games so saw them from then on

considering we were getting flogged by 100pts in praccy games this yr and we played some of the same teams and won we seem to be travelling along alright

gledhill win destroy this league if his body holds up (kicked 70 odd 3yrs ago in div 2) but it's more the sharing the load that has been impressive rather then 6 great players and a huge drop off

we're under no illusions though - we haven't won a game in near on 2 yrs and will be desperate against whoever we play in round 1 (hallam) in a bid to get that 1st win and build from there

obviously i'm 2'sing it up this year but my run of not training but playing 1's had to come to an end soon I suppose

Whats your or your teammates thoughts on the 2's starting at 6.15pm?

I would think that a lot of players would be forced to have to take time off work to get there on time. I know I would have to.

I thought the same, but the 2's would want to play the night game as well! Something like that doesn't come around that often

we have a few who can't make it that early actually - good players too!

we played at springvale a few yrs ago friday night lights but the 2's played sat so 2 trips to springvale in 18hrs - not cool

so yeah not ideal but i haven't played under lights since then so i'm good to go...and the fact i finsh work at 10am fridays works real well!!

When you say "last year it was out efficiency in front of goal that killed us", I'm not sure you can say that as if Sandown were unlucky.

Losing a game or 2 due to efficiency in front of goal can be unlucky (in a way), however if your kicking efficiency consistently let you down over the course of a whole year, that actually confirms that the side as a collective consistently lacks polish and skill......which is a massive issue that won't just magically fix itself without replacing personnel.

a very fair point above

luke ball got 2nd worst on ground via tripleM in the that first game against fremantle because of his goal kicking even though he still had it 25 - 30 times, to get it that much and butcher it actually hurts you these days
