In response to Exhale You's post, I agree Crossy has made good runs in ODD's and T20's recently, but I can't remember him making decent scores in Shield cricket yet. But yeah, he's entitled to his chance.

I think Mash needs to be opening if he plays though.

Yeah agreed. I'd go with this atm, with our whole middle order gone:

1. Rogers
2. Mash
3. Quiney
4. Jewell (Does bat down the order a bit for Frankston-Peninsula when he isn't playing for the Vics)
5. McDonald (captain should be up higher)
6. Crosthwaite
7. Wade +
8. Wright
9. McGain
10. Mckay
11. Nannes

Disappointing to be five down given our start, but not overly surprising given how brittle our middle order is right now.

Hopefully Crossy and Wade can stick together and build a partnership.

Surely there are better batsmen in district cricket than Crosthwaite.

There are, but are there any in contention who are in better form? Doubtful.

Given the loss of experience, the last thing we needed was a young, untried kid in the brittle middle order.

If he is good enough to be picked as a batsmen alone, surely he must get a game ahead of wade when the 'stars' come back.

He's in good enough form to get a game as a batsman when we're without our three best middle-order batsman.
Totally different scenario when the three big guns return.

Agree with an earlier post, could have been a good cance to play Hill and let him get a taste for it.

The kid has a stack of ability, but given how weak our middle order is without Hodge, Hussey and White i don't think it would have been a good idea to play a debutante, especially in such trying conditions.

The last time Adam Crosthwaite played a Shield game he made a fighting 50 in the Shield final.

I don't know whether he'll make runs in this match, but i feel he has done enough at district level to justify his spot (given who we have missing).

The structure of Victoria's batting line up is a bit concerning. Playing 4 usual openers and 2 keepers is a bit risky. I thought it would have been a good opportunity to give young Hill a go in the middle order. Openers batting middle order are always that little bit more toey having to wait. Although I guess Quiney has been performing well middle order before Xmas.

If Crosthwaite is good enough to play as a specialist batsman and bat ahead of Wade, surely he is good enough to take his spot as keeper too. The level of their keeping really doesn't differ all that much. I'm a big fan of Wade, but Crossy does have the runs on the board.

I have thought the same thing, has been itching at the wings to get a crack, made a solid 90 and a hundred in the second innings in the second innings in a premier match, so is in form, am also a little worried about the four openers, although Quiney plays more as a middle order bat in the longer form of the game, any ways, doesnt he. will be interesting to see how the Vics go, especially since it is going to be hot, and Mcgain can only bowl for so long, and having the big three 'White/Hodge/Hussey) also loses valuable extra bowling options. will be interesting to see as many have mentioned.

Matthew Weeks has left the field, apparently struggling with the heat.

So now Tom Cooper is rolling his arm over, in tandem with Dan Harris who, despite only have 7 wickets in his career, has impressive figures of 2/25 from 10 overs.

EDIT: Wade appears to be in some decent form, but Crossy looks like he's struggling a bit.
The old Crossy would have snapped 20 minutes ago, gone the tonk and got out, so hopefully he can keep his head down and make a decent score.

What about two tons in the 2nd XI including 114 & 78 last game.

He couldn't have done much more to deserve a spot in the side.
