Should there be a summer league?

Three month off season is long enough. Six months is too long.

Season needs to be from Early March to late November and each team play each other twice and have a 34 round competition. Each team should have at least five- five day breaks etc. AFL fixture is the poorest in the world.
I agree the off season is too long

Should definitely televise the NTFL on Fox Footy over the summer months. Plenty of ex-players (retired or delisted) sign with an NT footy club for the summer for the extra cash and the opportunity to play some more footy. Having it aired on TV would be great for the league and might actually help identify future draft prospects up north.

Would love to see more rookies coming from the NTFL.

I know NITV airs a game or two per week, but surely pumping just a little bit of money into it over the summer months would pay off for Fox Footy.

International club challenge, afl to sell franchises like iPL which are based on aussie rules leagues overseas but allowed to also have some expat Aussies, even ex afl players

Not sure if it should involve touring like super 15 pr whether the comp should chose a host country like the rugby world cup. The latter may be easier to televise to aus (which would be essential) as all the production and support staff would be in the one country.

The country could be chosen to have a more ideal climate for the duration

Could rotate it every second year with the international cup

NTFL is the way to go. Exciting footy played in its most purest form.
They stuffed the foxtel cup but that could have had legs.
Care factor for the matador cup is next to 0.
So keen to see aus play someone other than England in an ashes series. The series is BS now thanks to an overkill!.
Series V NZ will be good to watch this summer and can easily say it could go 50-50.
What about a NAB Cup again instead of NAB challenge matches. A knockout comp involving all AFL sides plus the Flag winners of the state leagues. Or if that's too big all top 8 finishing sides and state league flag winners, with bottom 8 AFL sides playing NAB challenge. Similar to the soccer comp FFA cup is it?.
Ads excitement for all, big prize money on offer and something for the state sides and supporters to cherish.
Imagine like a west Adelaide beating Adelaide crows.

get the grand finalists of the WAFL, SANFL, VFL and NEAFL together for an 8 team comp
If the NEAFL is in there may as well throw the TSL in as well, so those 4 sides have a chance to win a game. I'd also put the proviso (unless it's for teams like Essendon VFL or Adelaide) that only State league players are eligible.

a weekend-long round-robin AFL 9s tournament of 20-minute halves, featuring all clubs. Kind of like what the NRL do in NZ every summer, only featuring a sport that doesn't make me physically ill to watch.

Have cities bid for the rights to host, and put big enough prize-money up so that we get to see the best players in action.

Yes. Rugby League should be moved to summer so there is no clash with real footy.
They can fight it out with soccer.

Would love this!

should be rep footy or something, no footy is killing me

Maybe a modified rules?A bit like touch footy/rugby with minimal contact.15 a side and much shorter game.Something to keep the fitness up but minimal injuries and not playing for cattle stations.

This thread is comedy gold.

Does anyone suggesting summer league, international, modified rules, etc., have any grasp of reality? Money doesn't grow on trees.

If the USA can't get a European league going with American football (the most popular of the 4 major pro sports in the USA, the nfl is a license to print money), a sport that less than half of Australia cares about, and absolutely no one outside Australia knows exists has zero, nil, nada, Buckley's chance of succeeding.

FOXTEL is struggling with around 30% penetration, with new media operating video on demand a huge threat. Fox sports have little money. They aren't going to broadcast anything else, and the reason is simple, there is NO demand.

And what do you think the coaches, players, administrators and fans care about? It's making finals, winning premiership. Anything that risks the players sustaining an injury that isn't contributing to winning is going to be opposed. And as a fan, I wish they would even stop that stupid farce called the nab challenge. If afl state of origin can't be seriously embraced, any other ideas are not out of this world but out of this universe!

Get real folks! (By all means keep the ideas coming though, there can be a contest for who has the least grasp of reality)

Half the stuff you've just written hasn't been even remotely referred to anywhere in this thread. What does an NFL European league have to do with anything?

AFL has it much better than NRL fans. We have a trade period, national draft and the international series. Not to mention a pre-season competition.

Besides, as has been mentioned, enjoy the summer of cricket!

To be fair, the Auckland 9s competition is pretty awesome. Having every club form a smaller group of players to play a weekend tournament in summer is a great idea.

I'd love to see an AFL 9s tournament held at somewhere like Metricon or AO over a weekend in February, but it won't happen.
