Just listening to SEN with Tony Sheehan and Mark Stone 99% sure I heard that Simmonds has re-signed for 1 year but surprisingly they added that he had been offered 2 year contracts by both Saints and Brisbane WTF???

He loves Tigerland and has always wanted to stay. True story.

And it seems Hardwick sees value in him if he's stayed on.

I can handle it. We need a ruckman with a decent size that will stop Vickery getting slaughtered and bashed about next year in too many ruck contests. With a bit of luck it might also mean we'll be giving Vickery time in the forward line. :thumbsu:

I guess if St Kilda were after him, Steven King or Michael Gardiner will be delisted/retiring soon but that's another story.

well if he is kept on the club must think they can still use him. might just be up forward with only a little big in the ruck.

His role for next year (if he is signed up) should be to just protect the younger ruckman from the hard grunt work. Get him to put his body in the ruck and just get bashed about like a battering ram. He can be our front line soldier.

This. Yes Simmo had a horrible year and it seems the game has passed him by but let's not forget what a valuable servant of the club he has been.

Absolutely. Those dreamers pencilling in Vickery as our number one ruckman are at least three years too early. Playing him constantly in the ruck at this stage is a sure-fire way to ruin him.

At the very worst he'll take the hits to protect our younger ruckman - we need an experienced ruckman for this task alone.

I am happy for him to have one more year at Tigerland as I think he can still help us if he is fit and has a good pre-season. We can't just throw young ruckman in the deep end like that because they will eventually drown.

Geez, that's depressing. He should've retired this year as he was a massive liability out there, way past it. Anything we could get for him in the draft would've been a huge win, can't believe he's sticking around. He will be a huge flop in 2010 just like this year, mark my words.

Well he sure as hell doesn't act like it on the field. He wasn't in our best side for most of this year when we won 5 games. What makes us think he'd be in it next year?

Interesting decision I reckon.... can only have been made to protect our younger rucks or perhaps as back up for them or perhaps because we have started tanking for 2010 a little early....

Either that or they are concerned that if we delist too many more players, then we will be trying to replace experienced (read over the hill) players with draftees in the 5th and 6th rounds of the draft which is traditionally not a successful way of doing things.

I hope Simmo regains his confidence and his fitness and has a serviceable year for us and Coburg next year before he either retires or is finally given the boot.

They needed to keep him on for one more year. There's not much else in the way of ruckmen and we don't want Vickery getting smashed up before he's fully developed.

:thumbsu:

Protecting a young developing ruckman from getting smashed by gorillas next year isn't a 'stop gap'. It's smart.
Yep, don't want Vickery to end up like Josh Fraser who had to carry the load as number 1 ruck at a very young age

why dont we use Gus and Patto to do this then. better than Simmonds. unless he can regain a bit of speed.

Probably because they are both young developing ruckmen themselves who are not physically ready to take on the No. 1 ruckman role for a whole season (some would argue Patto will never be able to shoulder that role)?
