Did the AFL inform the police of all of this , if not why not as the AFL is not a law unto itself and the Players Asscociation must also inform the police of the evidence they have as well .

If they both dont do that then they dont have the players welfare at heart .The hair testing comment was very interesting .

They must act now so the illegal drug problem doesnt take a hold of ther lives like it did to ie : Ben Cousins .

Act now before its too late .

Why would they report it to the cops? Oh, lets hunt down AFL players who have taken drugs (they may have been caught on the ONE occasion they had done it all year) when those police could be spending their time chasing real criminals. FFS, AFL players aren't perfect.

I was worked up to type more but i feel like you could be just a troll

It sounds like the OP was very tongue-in-cheek (I could be wrong), but could you please describe what 'real criminals' are so people know how to tell the difference?

Also, wouldn't interviewing players who had taken drugs, and thus getting the names of the people selling the drugs, help the police to chase down these 'real criminals'?

He's mostly anti the powers that run the AFL.

He also loves to show his indignation on a multitude of issues but you will notice they usually don't get added to existing threads.

He loves to make new threads to show his outrage and essentially is just an attention seeker choosing one of the easiest targets that won't get him much argument.

Pretty sad really.

If you see your mate speeding, do you call the police? No, didn't think so! Silly post!

By the way, the Police were the ones that discovered one of the strikable offences and choose not to charge the person as they, like the AFL/AFLPA, are more concerned with the persons well being!

They also do not include any players caught in a trial of hair-testing - all the positive results were from urine tests. The league said all players who returned positive results to the hair tests had been directed to education programs, but refused to say how many had failed the tests.

This is the biggest worry. Is there a drug culture within the AFL?

This policy is hardly transparent and doesn't fill me with much faith.

I don't particularly care if there is some recreational drugs being used. I do care when the AFL try to get on the high horse about it drugs and say how important this is with one hand, but in the other this policy does little to discourage the use of drugs.

Why are the AFL testing for recreational drugs anyway? Performance enhancing drugs, yeah sure, but if a player wants to go out and get blazed on the weekend thats their business imo.

The cps can't do anything about it. You can only be charged with possession or dealing. And to the moron asking to clarify "real criminals"....get with the times and don't believe everything the Government tells you about those naughty drugs...

For the same reason that any workplace that chooses to test for drugs do. Because they are the conditions of employment.

If you worked at a company, took recreational drugs on the weekend and they introduced mandatory drug testing, you either stop taking drugs, or find a new job. Or continue to take drugs and just hope you don't get caught *shrugs*

Personally I believe if people want to take drugs, thats their own choice, but if the conditions of your employment are that you need to pass mandatory drug tests, then don't bitch and complain when you get caught, go find a new job if you don't like it.

Taking drugs isn't illegal, possessing them is. Failing a drug test shows someone has taken a drug but unless they're driving a car or pissing off the general public they can be as high as a kite and the cops can't do a thing as long as no drugs are still in their possession.

only 6? not bad considering how many players and especially fit guys around the age 18-30ish living a semi rockstar lifestyle with, women, cash to splash and always at functions etc... lesser leagues and local clubs would have higher than 6 in each team every week.

Only 6 failed the urine tests. AFL refused to release the results for the hair tests. Read into that what you will.

Plus if I'm not mistaken, the AFL is the only professional sports league in the world where illicit drug testing is done at all, and this is only because the players agreed to it. I doubt they would have agreed to it if "btw if you get caught, we're dobbing you into the cops".

6 out of what, 600+ is a very small number considering the actual instances of recreational drug use amongst the 18 to 30 bracket of the general public out there getting on the gear on the weekend. Considering the lifestyle these guys live - large disposable income, spare time, very much the centre of attention in Melbourne - i'm honestly surpised that we don't see more of it among AFL players

I'd be assuming due to rookie players and draftees - Doesn't the hair test trace back as far as 18 months or something.

It might be completely erroneous to draw conclusions between the hair test results and the number of people currently taking drugs in the AFL.

Then again, it might not.

Nevertheless, my local pub has a bigger drug problem than the AFL.

Depends how long the hair is. If your Dale Thomas, your clean by having hair that is so long it can be traced back probably 2years+

This is why Counsins shaved his head when he returned to the game. One to remove any former trace and to avoid what he thought was the AFL out to get him.

The implication of having a shaven head could be that a player is or was recently using...no?

To sceptics I guess. But that is what the urine tests are for. If Dale Thomas was gonna shave his head it would of been post-premiership afterparty...:p

He's publicly announced he will be shaving it for charity posts season.
I'm starting to think the whole "send em off to Arizona" smoke-screen was so ASADA wasted their stretched resources testing Swanny and co while Daisy is at home on a PED mega-marathon pre-head shave.:D
