2. Brendan Goddard for Pick 18
3. Jayden Laverde, Pick 18 and 2017 2nd Round Pick and for Isaac Heeney and 2017 2nd Round Pick

9. 2017 1st Round Pick, Mitch McGovern, Oscar McDonald and Alex Morgan for Chad Wingard and Riley Bonner

Trade Recruits

Isaac Heeney: Heeney is everything you'd want in a midfielder. He's committed and willing, he can bust through congestion with speed and awareness, his hands are quick and sharp, and he gets plenty of the ball. Taken at Pick 18 in the 2014 National Draft after being a member of the Sydney Swans academy and was voted the best young player in 2016. He is considered one of the best young talents in the league and already has finals experience and has shown he can be an elite midfielder as well as going forward and kicking a goal.

Christian Petrecca: Motivated and determined, Petracca has shown his huge potential in essentially his first year of senior football after missing last year. The most dominant player in the draft pool has evolved from a hard and strong marking half-forward to a dynamic and game-changing midfielder who kicks goals. He hunts the footy, barges through packs headfirst, shrugs out of tackles and is set to become one of the stars of the game.

Chad Wingard: Already one of the most dangerous players in the game, Wingard has so much football growth left in him. He is elusive, fast and has a terrific vertical leap as well as a remarkable goal-sense. When thrown into the midfield, he has an immediate impact which is remarkable given he is just 23 years of age.

Jeremy Cameron: One of the games more exciting young key forwards, Cameron once again produced another dominant season kicking 53 goals. Already an All-Australian and 5X leading GWS leading goal-kicker at 23, Cameron has a very bright future ahead of him and will form a dynamic partnership with Joe Daniher.

Riley Bonner: Young, skilful half-back with good foot skills. We believe he can become a very good player of the half-back and an eventual replacement for the departed Michael Hibberd.

Riley O'Brian: After Tom Bellchambers requested a trade we were keen on finding a depth ruckman and we believe he can eventually take over the number one ruck role.

Draft Selections

Pick 29 - Jordan Ridley: A tall runner from the Oakleigh Chargers who is versatile enough to play in almost any position and can be moved around the field seemingly without any disruption to his play.

Pick 64 - Tom Williamson: A skillfull medium defender/midfielder who can break games open with his speed. He shows good awareness and footy smarts and is a prolific ball-winner.

Pick 68 - Lachlan Tiziani: A smart and agile medium forward who is great overhead and classy at ground level. Was a member of the Giants academy in 2015.

Trades:

(1)
B.Ellis + S.Edwards + Pick 27
For
Pick 12 + E. Mackenzie

Getting back into the first round was a priority, and getting another quality key defender Eric Mackenzie to help release Rance was a also a win.

(2)
S.Lloyd
For
B.Matera

Trade suited each team win/win
Matera was on traded

(3)
C.Yarran
For
Pick 19

Having got back into the first round of the draft I wanted to get another pick to package up for a 'star' player. Sydney offered Pick 19 for Yarran, and although losing speed from the team was hard, it was all about the re-structure of the clubs list.

(4)
A.Miles + Pick 56
For
Pick 35

Needing a 2nd rounder to complete another deal I decided to package Miles with Pick 56 for Pick 35, knowing I would regain a younger/similar mid in the next trade.

(5)
J.Riewoldt + Pick 35
For
M.Crouch + W.Milera + Pick 25

This trade was hard to do. Riewoldt is a champion of the club, but bringing in two up and coming young players plus another early 2nd round pick was adequate compensation, Milera sits in the attacking half of the field for the next ten years next to Rioli. Crouch & Pick 25 were on traded.

(6)
B.Houli + Pick 25
For
R.Lester + Pick 21

My scenario was Houli to Brisbane, while this trade took away my only offensive rebounding defender it gave a handy depth player in Lester and a chance to move up the draft board. Current Picks: 12,19,21

(7)
J.Townsend + Pick 65
For
R.Knight

Depth player for depth player swap.

(8)
Pick 12 + Pick 21
For
D.Rich + Pick 11

Needing a rebounding defender Rich came up for a reasonable price, he is almost a like for like replacement for Houli, but adds another string to the midfield.

(9)
Corey Ellis
For
Pick 18

Again another hard trade to do, Corey is a quality player, but the opportunity to get another 1st round pick to on trade for a 'star' player was too good not to take up.

(10)
Pick 18 + Pick 19
For
Todd Goldstein

North Melbourne traded in Gawn so had the best two ruckmen in the competition in the one team, Pick 18 & 19 for their second choice and arguable the better of the two was a huge win for the football club, the midfield is now a strong point for the team.

(11)
Pick 37 + Pick 44
For
Bernie Vince + Pick 69

Another HBF/MID strengthens the team structure, Vince is a quality player/leader and will add to the teams midfield depth.

(12)
Brandon Matera
For
Pick 62 + Pick 63 + Pick 81

Low on draft picks, packaging Matera for three late picks was a fair trade.

(13)
DFA
Jay Schulz

Having traded away our star forward, I decided to Re-sign Schulz to the club after a stint at Port Adelaide. Schulz will work with English and Griffiths and help develop their games while also playing a few games to give the others a chop out if his form warrants it.

(14)
Pick 63
For
Scott Thompson

Another quality MID added to the team, Thompson is adequate depth for the inside midfield unit and will also help develop the younger mids.

(15)
Toby Nankervis
For
Heritier Lumumba

Having a surplus of Rucks and looking to draft another in the draft I decided to try and trade Nankervis to fill another need for the team, this was the rebounding half back role. Lumumba provides experience and will challenge for a starting spot in the team, making the team stronger.

(16)
Matt Crouch + Pick 62
For
Pick 26 + Pick 84

Although trading Crouch away after just getting him seems strange, the thought behind it was that I could on trade the pick I got in return for another 1st round pick, inside midfield depth is strong, so getting another high pick to get a kid that suits a different need for the club

(17)
David Astbury + Pick 26
For
Pick 17

Astbury is a quality player, but he was behind a few at the club, packaging him for Pick 17 was a win/win for the club. We now have flexibility in the 1st round of the draft.

Delisted: Taylor Hunt

Pick 11 - Tim English: English will learn in the ruck alongside Goldstein, he will develop his game and assume the number 1 roll after Goldstein retires, giving the Tigers security in the Ruck department for the next 10-12 years.

Pick 17 - Harry Perryman: Being a natural footballer was the reason Perryman was chosen here, he fills a lot of needs for the club, he will start on the HBF, but will play where ever suits him best at the top level, two quality young kids added to the team that fits into the re-structure.

Pick 69 - Hamish Brayshaw: inside mid, adds to the midfield depth. Will be developed in the VFL and work closely with Scott Thompson

Pick 80 - Willie Rioli Jr: Small foward. Daniels cousin, we thought Richmond was the perfect place for Willie to get the best out of his abilities, he will work with Milera and Daniel in the forward line.

Pick 81 - Sam Fowler: Another small forward that adds something different to the others, small & clever

Rookie Draft Pick 6 - Oscar McInerney
204cm VFL Ruckman that will develop alongside English and learn from Goldstein

Out: Pick 27, J.Riwoldt, B.Ellis, S.Edwards, C.Ellis, A.Miles, B.Houli, D.Astbury, C.Yarran, T.Nankervis, S.Grigg, J.Townsend, S.Lloyd, T.Hunt

In: Pick 11, Pick 17, E.Mackenzie, T.Goldstein, W.Milera, D.Rich, B.Vince, H.Lumumba, S.Thompson, R.Lester, R.Knight, J.Schulz

Depth:
Defenders: Tall - Rance, Mackenzie, Grimes, Batchelor, Broad, Small - Lumumba, Morris.

Rotating Midfielders: HBF - Rich, Vlastuin, Vince, Conca, Mcintosh, Perryman. HFF - Cotchin, Martin, Caddy, Knight, Lambert.

Midfielders: Prestia, Thompson, Brayshaw.

Ruckmen: Goldstein, Hampson, English (FF), Soldo, McInerney

Forwards: Tall - Griffiths, English (R), Schulz, Elton, Moore, Chol. Small - Rioli, Milera, Fowler, Butler, W.Rioli Jr.

Utilities: Lennon, Menadue, Markov, Short, Castagna, Drummond, Lester.

Review: My aim was to keep the core players while replacing the fringe with better quality players, and players that suit the game plan.
I opted to have a strong midfield, bringing in Goldstein, Vince, Thompson, Perryman, Rich to rotate though the middle with Martin, Cotchin, Prestia, Caddy and outside mids such as Menadue and McIntosh. I had to sacrifice Riewoldt and Edwards as well as the two Ellis boys to generate good midfield depth. Back line is also a strong point for the team, although it lacks some pace, the defensive unit would be one hard to penetrate. Rance and Grimes are joined by Eric Mackenzie in the key positions while Rich and Perryman join Vlastuin as rebounding defenders. In the forward line I have two 200cm+ marking targets in Ben Griffiths and Shaun Hampson, Griffiths will be the roaming centre half forward while Hampson will be the stay at home full forward with Jay Schulz, Elton and Chol waiting for a shot, also have Daniel Rioli and Wayne Milera at their feet ready to eat the crumbs.

Starting with Pick 27 in the Draft as my first pick, I wanted a first round selection - after a long trade period, I was eventually able to get Pick 11 & Pick 17 which was used on Tim English & Harry Perryman. I selected English over a few other players because I wanted him to develop under Goldstein to get the best out of his abilities, if I hadn't have received Todd I would have went a different direction in the draft.
With Pick 17 I decided to go best available. And Harry Perryman was too good to let slip any further, he slots straight onto the back flank to provide abit of energy and rebound while also developing his midfield game alongside the inside mids.

My later picks I tried to balance out my list. First selecting an inside mid in Hamish Brayshaw who will develop and be mentored by Scott Thompson. Willie Rioli and Sam Fowler were my last two picks in the national draft and they both are small forwards, I drafted them to have strengthen that department, but to also have Milera and Daniel Rioli move up the ground/on to a wing to generate speed in the midfield while also have clever crumbers near the goals.

Pre-trade period checklist:
  • 2017 1st round pick
  • Key defender
  • Key forward
  • Clearance specialist
  • Experience in defence
  • Back-up Ruckman
  • Classy half-back/outside mid with great footskills
Pre-trade list analysis:
Major issues

As it stands prior to the trade period, Collingwood is in a dire situation with both hands tied due to the Treloar and Aish trades. With such limited asset at hand, the task of bringing in promising key position talent seems challenging whereas elite players in this area seems completely impossible. Solid rookie key defenders can be obtained in this year's draft, however i have doubts over most of the available talents. Next year is an extremely stacked key forward draft, hence our focus of obtaining future picks.

The plethora of midfielders still lead to inefficient transition of the ball and losses in clearances. Players such as Greenwood and Crisp are very inside midfielders with incomplete traits, whereas other offensive midfielders such as Pendlebury and Sidebottom are good on paper but their lack of defensive pressure creates an inevitable liability. This is why a clearance and tackling specialist is absolutely essential to the Collingwood lineup.
Medium issues
The transition from half-back to other parts of the ground is still an issue despite heavy investment in Mathew Scharenberg (Pick 6), Travis Varcoe and Clinton Young. Scharenberg will be exactly the player Collingwood needs at half-back assuming fitness, but if Buckley wants to play finals in the immedtiate future, the backline needs to be strengthened. Allocating Sidebottom/Pendlebury/Adams there could be the solution, but it will be at the expense of midfield prowess, thus the need of an experienced half-back with precise footskills, astute decision making as well as leadership to guide the younger defenders and help them grow as players.

Minor issues
It's amazing how Grundy has developed throughout the years without an established ruck coach, it really goes to say how much he was underrated in his draft year. With the departure of Witts, Collingwood is in demand of a back-up ruckman who will transition into a ruck coach more than any other club.

The need of a smart medium forward to set up plays around the forward line. Will Hoskin-Elliot could be that player but he's more of a individual playmaker with athleticism and pace.

Picks available:
2016

2017
Collingwood 1st round pick, Fremantle 1st round pick, picks from the 3rd round onwards.

In:
1. Toby Greene
All Australian dynamic half forward at the age of 23. Also has some midfield capabilities while kicking multiple goals per game. At such a young age, he has already entered into elite territory and we are thrilled to have him.

2. Daniel Talia
All Australian full back at the age of 25. We couldn't believe it when the Adams-Talia deal went through. If there's 1 addition that would strengthen our team the most, it would be Talia. The All Australian key defender is everything the Pies had hope for and more. Perfect list fit, massive trade bargain.

3. Hamish Hartlett
One of the most damaging outside player there is. Top level run and carry and has an absolutely potent kick. Has previously struggled with tags but that won't be an issue at Collingwood with others such as Wells, Treloar, Pendlebury, Sidebottom.

4. Jarrad Mcveigh
After recruiting the talented half-back Tom Cutler, we felt that our backline was still too young and needed further development before full AFL exposure, so we brought in the experienced Jarrad Mcveigh. Despite being in the later stages of his career, Mcveigh still offers very good rebounding service and will prove to be invaluable towards the development of Tom Cutler and Matthew Scharenberg

5. Josh Jenkins
Jenkins probably was the Pies' second greatest recruit in the offseason. Kicked 62 goals in the year, averaging close to 3 a game, while also playing a large proportion of his game as a lead up forward and back up ruckman, some would argue he deserved a final spot in the All Australian Squad. Regardless, being part of the AA 40 men squad, Jenkins is a high profile centre half forward and would immediately strengthen our best 22.

6. Jack Grimes
Picked up as a DFA. Purely from a best available basis, we felt he still had something to offer in AFL, and would be a solid back up to our best 6 defenders.

7. Sam Collins
Before recruiting the highly touted Daniel Talia, we were set on having Collins shoulder the full-back responsibility in 2017. He is undoubtedly a talent we really rate. At the age of 22, he has already held his spot as an AFL full-back to a very high level of performance. The growth potential is immense, and having him as the back-up to Reid, Talia gives us the green light to HEAVILY pursue Key forwards in the 2017 draft.

8. Michael Barlow
I never understood why he was so underrated by Fremantle and Ross Lyons. He is in our opinion a top 20 inside midfielder in the comp, and was criminally played out of position in the last few years. His contested ability and contribution to clearances is elite. Being a strong bodied player (189 cm 91 kg), he would add the grunt and defensive work necessary to complement the offensive midfielders such as Wells, Pendlebury, Treloar and Sidebottom. Considering how cheap he went for, another massive bargain.

9. Matt Rosa
With the departure of Crisp, Adams, Greenwood. We felt that the inclusion of solely Barlow isn't enough to take us far in our 2017 premiership campaign. Therefore, we brought in Rosa as our depth midfielder, who on a good day, can still be a solid B grader.

10. Ivan Maric
We brought him in as our back-up ruckman and ruck coach. We thought Maric was the ideal fit for this position for a number of reasons. Firstly, performance wise he's achieved a very high level in his prime years. Secondly, he plays a very similar playstyle to Grundy, being that mobile ruckman who is superb around the ground but only above average in taps. Thirdly, he still can offer decent AFL level performance when Grundy is rested. Other candidates considered: Minson, Currie.

11. Tom Cutler
Tom does not nearly get the credit he deserves, perhaps due to not many people watching Brisbane matches, but he has been undoubtedly one of Brisbane's few shining lights in 2016. Strong run and carry, good footskills, pace, he's got it all. He is part of our future plans and will currently compete a defense spot on the bench with Matthew Scharenberg. We hope the 2 together can eventually take over from Hartlett and Mcveigh and resume the damaging half-back roles.

12. Fremantle's 2017 1st round pick.

The 2017 draft is looking like the strongest Key forward draft in the past decade. Currently, Collingwood has 2 first round picks and will use one of them for a highly regarded key forward, and the second one perhaps for another KPF or a slider as others are immersed by the wealth of key position players. There's also the synergy with the recruitment of Jenkins, who will shoulder the Key forward load for a few years, just enough time for the 1 or 2 key forwards we will recruit next year.

13. Will Hayward (Pick 24)
15th on my list for the 2016 draft. He's a strong marking half forward, who is both damaging on the lead as well as being a great marking option inside 50. As the list stands, Collingwood is set in terms of defence and ruck talents, and will continue to pursue midfielders and non-KPF forwards in the draft.

14. Cedrix Cox (Pick 33)
Electrifying line breaker with serious pace and elite foot skills. Offers immense point of difference to our team, which is skilful by foot but relatively lacks speedy young run and carry players with Treloar, Hartlett, Wells, Hoskin Elliot, Broomhead being our only options. All of those players play on the forward end of the ground, whereas Cox complements others at half-back. Cedrix in our view is the most exciting player in this year's draft, and we hope we can turn into a player similar to Jason Johanissen.

15 Jacob Allison(Pick 49)
An extremely tall and athletic midfielder with line-breaking pace. Was touted as a top 10 pick coming into this year. Has a booming kick and is versatile enough to play multiple roles to a very high degree. The potential and upside here is immense, he could be a future Patrick Cripps with Dangerfield's pace.

16. Lachlan Walker (Pick 102)
A promising young inside midfielder who has similar attributes as Steele Sidebottom, being very competent on both sides as well as having a balanced inside/outside game. He will add to our midfield stock which is probably the only area with some degree of deficiency. He's a long shot to be an AFL standard midfielder, but with enough patience he could make it with a relatively high ceiling for someone available at pick 102.

17. Mitch Mccarthy (Pick 105)
Very raw but has the potential to become a decent AFL standard key forward/defender. Very much a project player, but the upside is immense and we simply could not ignore him at such a cheap price. However, with us most likely picking 2 key forwards in the first round next year, the competition for him is significant.

Out:
-Taylor Adams
-Jack Crisp
-Levi Greenwood
-Adam Oxley
-Jesse White
-Alex Fasolo
-Jarryd Blair
-Tom Langdon
-Josh Smith
-Brayden Sier
-Travis Varcoe
-Lynden Dunn (Delisted)
-Pick 28
-Pick 44
-Pick 51
-Pick 62
-Pick 65
-Pick 82

Post trade period review
Prior to the commencement of the trade period, our goal initially was to continue the rebuild and a smooth transition curve by injecting promising talent into the key forward and key defender category. However, with how successful the off-season was for us, it makes perfect sense for us to raise our expectation a bit higher than just making finals for 2017. In particular, the inclusion of an elite AA full back Daniel Talia, AA 40 men squad centre half forward Josh Jenkins, and AA half forward Toby Greene strengthens the potency of our best 22 drastically. Looking at the current squad, it almost mimics the team talent composition of our 2010 premiership side, with star players all across the board who have all arguably not even reached their prime years. Players like Aish, Broomhead, De Goey, Grundy, Moore, Elliot, Treloar will only get better from here onwards, whereas experienced stars such as Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Talia, Jenkins, Hartlett have many many years of service to offer. The team also has experience and leadership across the field with Mcveigh down back, Wells/Pendlebury in the midfield, Maric in the ruck, Jenkins up forward, all of which will lay down the stepping stones for the next generation to climb up the premiership ladder.

Added has my Star Forward of the Future to Pair with Gunston

39 Isaac Cumming (20)
Speed as well as skill bargain pick for me, D.Pearce replacement

Small Forward added for depth as well as pressure and spark in forward line, can kick goals

97 Brodie Romensky (NA)
Tall Midfielder who can add depth to the team

21 Jack Rolls (NA)
Half forward GC Academy Player added depth

39 Copper Jones (NA)

Versatile KPP who should start down back

DFA:
Jake Barrett
Ball Magnet who will be pushing for senior selection

Trades:

#1: Sam Collins for Tom Langdon
At this Stage had a Surplus of KPD and Langdon is very good at defending as well as having some speed and rebound, was a Reserve player for a best 22 player

#2: Nathan Fyfe & Lee Spurr for Josh Kelly and Pick 2
The 2015 Brownlow Medalist was shopped around and believe i got a future A grade midfielder as well as a high Pick in deep draft, Lee Spurr was on the trade block and was thrown in to get the deal done

#3: Matt Taberner for Jesse Lonergan
Taberner had shown nothing to prove he was going to be an AFL forward, I had many mids on the Trade Block and believed that Lonergan was a Best 22 mid who could also play off the Half Back

#4: Aaron Sandilands for Jake Lloyd
This one was a no brainer a 33 soon to be 34 year old ruckman who is injury prone for a small utility who had a breakout season this past year and is hugely underrated

#5: Pick 2 & Alex Pearce for Luke Parker
Was Planning on keeping pick 2 as well as Pearce who i rate very high, but when I knew i could get the 2016 runner up in the Brownlow Medal I had to pull the trigger with a core of Parker, Neale, Kelly & the Hill brothers was very pleased with this trade

#6: Pick 35 for Anthony Miles & pick 56
Need more starting midfielders and to get the contested ball winner in Miles for pick 35 was a steal, receiving pick 56 back as well was very pleased.

#7: Lachie Weller for Jack Hombsch and pick 50
Weller was a player that i planned on keeping but with recent midfield ins as well as KPD out I needed to get a good young defender, Hombsch is very underrated and will form a tandem with Hamling for years to come

#8: Connor Blakley for pick 12
Blakley had a very good 2016 season but when pick 12 was offered in a deep draft I couldn't refuse it.

#9: David Mundy for Aiden Corr & pick 39
As part of the rebuild i was trading the over 30 players, picking up pick 39 and some KPD depth in Corr was a deal that suited my needs.

#10: Pick 71 for Jake Spencer
At this Stage i had one ruckman on my team, so needed some depth Spencer hasnt played heaps of games but has been on a AFL list for 8 years and provides needed depth

#11: Matt Uebergang for Tom Downie
Traded out a rookie who would of been delisted for a ruck who has been developing and will get first shot at the number 1 ruck.

#12: Hayden Crozier for Andrew Mackie & Pick 45
Tommy Sheridan requested a trade so will negotiating a deal I added a vet replacement in case i couldn't get someone else in.

#13: Tom Sheridan, pick 50 & pick 56 for Jono O'Rourke and Pick 43
Tom Sheridan was offered to hawks along with Weller & Blakley and Hawthorn had told me they had no interest in Sheridan this made it hard to get Maximum value for him, I did how ever get O'rourke to add to my mid depth and a pick upgrade which i had been looking for so didnt hurt too much losing him.

#14: Pick 12, 2017 1st rounder, Cam Mccarthy for Jack Gunston
My Forward line lacked a gun KPF and also needed to replace Pavlich, my plan was to keep Mccarthy and pair with Gunston but Hawks Insisted on a KPF back and McCarthy is still an unknown, in Gunston i get a player who is only 25 and has kicked over 200 goals over the last few years and is one of the best kicks in the competion.

#15: Garrett Ibbotson and 79 for Jake Melksham and pick 72
Ibbotson was available for any pick, so when a pick upgrade and a player who went for pick 25 last year got offered I had to accept.

#16: Picks 40, 43 & 45 for Picks 25 & 76

Wanted a Pick upgrade and got one

#17: Nick Suban & Shane Yarran for Brad Ebert
two players i planned on delisting for a starting midfielder was a no brainer

#18: pick 25 and Brad Ebert for pick 14

wanted a KPF with pick 25, but with 2 potentially could of been already gone moved up again.

IF HAVE TIME WILL IMPROVE VERY RUSHED, ALSO SEEM TO BE MISSING PLAYER IN MY RESERVE TEAM

TRADE ANALYSIS

1) Breust, Howe and Birchall for Webb, Adams, pick 26 and pick 75(Bulldogs)
Not the biggest fan of Bruest. I have Sicily to seamlessly step into the role. Let Sicily develop as he looks very promising. From the start i wanted to bring in a younger team reason being i was ok with Birchall leaving. Webb replaces Birchall as younger talent. Pick 26 was always going to be on-traded aswell as pick 75. I knew Adelaide was keen on a tall defender after trading away D.Talia was always going to on-trade Marcus Adams

2) Marcus Adams, Whitecross & Pick 75 for Pick 20, 44 & 53(Adelaide)
On-traded Adams Adelaide for draft picks. Pick 20 & 26(received in previous trade) was a good start to get a young gun midfielder. Whitecross is easily replaceable although he was a very calm head and regularly did his role well.

3) Picks 44 & 53 for Picks 52, 58, 59 & 60(GWS)
Thought this was a bit of a steal. I upgrade Pick 53 to Pick 52 and give up pick 44 for picks 58, 59 & 60. I was always going to on-trade at least 3 of the 4 picks i received although i ended up trading all 4 of them out.

4) Pick 20 + Duryea + Pick 26 + Pick 52 for Pick 14 + Pick 16 + Pick 78(Brisbane)
Again a trade to get higher up the order to tempt someone to trade a young gun midfielder. Duryea is a decent loss however i was quite determined to add a young gun midfielder.

5) W.Langford for Douglas + Pick 67(Adelaide)
Langford to Adelaide was my trade scenario. happy to cop a bit of a loss on that one to get it out of the way. Douglas ended up being packaged with Henderson for Pick 48 and I picked Parfitt with Pick 67 so ended up as a decent result for me.

6) Pick 14 + Pick 16 + Billy Hartung for Tom Liberatore + Pick 43(Bulldogs)
I finally get my young gun midfielder!!! Don't mind losing Hartung. Pick 43 in return is handy. I'm thrilled at this result though. It's exactly what Hawthorn need.

7) Daniel Howe + Jake Kolo(don't make me try to spell the whole name) for Pick 58 + Pick 59(Bulldogs)
Thought this was a steal. I get Howe back and also get Jake Kolodjashnij which i both rate. Would of been happy to part with pick 43 & 60 for them. Jake Kolodjashnij replaces Duryea and Howe provides much needed midfield depth.

8) Jono O'Rourke + Pick 43 for Tom Sheridan + Pick 50, 56(Fremantle)
This one i got a steal. I figured out that his trade scenario was Sheridan to Hawthorn as he was a bit too adamant on getting a trade done. I weaken my midfield depth but gain a good young half-backman. Planned to target the draft for midfielders so wasn't a big worry.

9) Jack Gunston for Pick 12 + 2017 1st Rounder + Cameron McCarthy(Fremantle)
I was very hesitant trading out Gunston as he's not far short of a superstar. Cam McCarthy takes his spot. Also recieve pick 12 and Freo's 2017 1st. Was thinking i could get a young gun key forward with pick 12 + steaknives. Big trade from me quite late in the trade period. really had to get things moving on from here

10) Pick 12, 50 for Josh Bruce, Pick 73(St Kilda)
Here's the young gun key-forward i managed a trade for. Had to get him as Roughead's AFL career is in doubt so Bruce and McCarthy is a great duo to lead the clubs forward-line for the next 8+ years.

11) Fremantles 2017 1st rounder, Pick 56 & 60 for Pick 31, 32 & 82(Collingwood)
Just wanted to get a decent position in the draft. In a real world trading scenario I would be getting way unders. Picks 31 & 32 become my highest draft picks. Quite happy with the trade. Was going to package them up for a higher draft pick but didn't eventuate. Ended up getting Jack Graham and Pat Kerr with picks 31 & 32.

12) Douglas & R.Henderson for Pick 48(Melbourne)
Just wanted to move up the draft order. Douglas and Henderson are both older than 28. Plan to get midfielders and half-backs in the draft anyway.

13) DFA - Brad McKenzie
Picked him in the DFA draft we had. replaces Henderson as depth.

14) Delisted - Dallas Willsmore
Was trying to trade him for a late pick. didn't happen. happy to delist him for an extra pick in the National Draft. Would say he wasn't too far from getting delisted by Hawthorn anyway.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

NATIONAL

The players i picked went at(what i picked them at), What they got picked in the national draft
Graham (31), 53
Kerr (32), 65
Williams (48), 36
Parfitt (67), 26
Guelfi (73), N/A
So essentially according to the National Draft I got pick 26, 36, 53, 65 & N/A

Pick 31 - Jack Graham
I'm surprised Graham made it to pick 53 in the National Draft on Friday. Ready-made. It was a needs pick for me though considering i'd traded out O'Rourke & W.Langford + the departures of Lewis & Mitchell. Although i did add Tom Liberatore to the team which is more than handy. Graham is for Immediate midfield depth and to eventually take a spot left open by the departures of Mitchell and Lewis.
8.5/10

Pick 32 - Patrick Kerr
Kerr was also a needs based pick for me as i'd traded out Gunston and delisted Willsmore. Even though i'd added Cam McCarthy & Josh Bruce there is still uncertainty about Rougheads future in AFL and Poppy will be nearing the end in a few years time. I also traded out Bruest.
7/10

Pick 48 - Josh Williams
Williams adds that speed Hawthorn have been lacking and adds depth after trading out Douglas, Henderson, Langford, JOR.
Has X-factor. bit of a wild-card but obviously is rated by the clubs as he was taken pick 36 in the national draft.
8.5/10

Pick 67 - Brandan Parfitt
Parfitt again adds speed & X-factor, could be a small forward or could be transformed into a midfielder. Was going to draft Jarman but Adelaide took him a few picks earlier. This guy is a similar type role to Jarman so i thought he'd be a nice addition. Was contemplating him with pick 48 so was stoked that he was still available 20 picks later at pick 67. Went Pick 26 in the national draft so obviously has talent that the clubs can recognise. 10/10

Pick 73 - Matt Guelfi
Guelfi was to just add another young midfielder to the team. Didn't know much about him but was going pick 40's in a couple phantom and mock drafts so thought he might be alright. Didn't get drafted on Friday night but has a bit of speed to him. Alright pickup. Don't know too much about him. May be a very solid footballer.
7/10

Pick 78(Rookie Upgrade) - Kade Stewart

ROOKIE
3rd Round - Conor Noonan
Noonan again one that had seen in the 40's in some phantom drafts. Bit of a project player. has some athleticism but needs to work on his game to polish it up. 7.5/10

2nd Round - Jack Fitzpatrick
Fitzy is obviousy just cover for the injured Ceglar. Can do a job. got some agility and speed for a big man. Back-up alongside Pittonet although Pittonet is more a genuine tap-ruckman and Fitzy is a Fwd/Ruck type. If Vickery gets injured then Fitzy may be the man. If McEvoy gets injured then i'd say Pitts comes in.
8.5/10

3rd Round - Jack Henry
Jack Henry is a needs based one. thought Hawthorn need a tall midfielder. Bit of a project player. see how he goes. Got picked up with
7/10

Overall. I'd rate my draft with the picks i had.

PREVIEW & REVIEW

PREVIEW
From the start i knew i needed
Young Gun Midfielder
Young Half-back
An alright hand at the draft table

I managed all 3 of these things but maybe i would have like a slightly better hand in the draft

Was considering:
A young gun Key Forward
A Gun Key Defender

I got a young key forward ala Josh Bruce but i didn't get a gun key defender as i noticed there wasn't a desperate need for one and would just take away from the development of Brand.

Those were things i needed or considered but overall i just really wanted a younger list to continue going the way Hawthorn had already gone trading out Mitchell and Lewis.

Player that were going to be almost impossible to get from me:
T.Mitchell
O'Meara
Shiels
Frawley
Stratton
BB & Vickery(didn't want to go out poaching a ruck-man and Ceglar injured)
Burton
Lovell
Smith
Hodge
ONCE I GOT THEM
Liberatore
Bruce

Players that would have needed a very good offer to get:
Gunston - Got Traded
Rioli
Brand
Burgoyne
Gibson
Pittonet(again because of Ceglar being injured)
ONCE I GOT THEM
Jake Kolodjashnij

REVIEW:
I managed to achieve my goals. Probably would have liked to get higher in the draft but wasn't real goal just wanted to have a decent go at the draft which i did. I'm happy with how i went overall and think i made a team which could challenge for the flag in 4 years time.

For the future we have:
Got Parfitt to cover Puopolo in a few years time.
Got Graham to replace Hodge
Got Howe to replace Burgoyne
Got Kolo/Burton to replace Gibson. Brand is also in best 22 to help out.

Draft Picks

Pick 13- Griffin Logie
Gives the dogs good depth in KPD/Third Talls. Might push into the midfield in the future.

Pick 30- Luke Ryan
Ready to play running/intercept defender. Will replace Bob Murphy in the side after he retires.

Pick 41- Ben Long
Small forward who has good ball use and goal sense. Already had a connection with the dogs playing for Footscray this year.

Rookie Draft Picks

Pick 18- Darcy Cameron
Gives use backup in the ruck after trading Tom Campbell. Mature aged and ready to play if needed.

Pick 36- Mitch Hannan
Another Footscray VFL player who has a great pair of hands and a good kick.

List Analysis

Backline
Morris is now joined by Henderson as the two talls replacing premiership player Joel Hamling and Marcus Adams. Easton Wood will continue to play third tall with Matty Boyd helping him intercept. JJ and Murph will provide run and class to the backline. Shane Biggs is on the bench who played in Murphys spot last season. Four time premiership player Grant Birchall has also been added to the dogs as another running half-back option. There is also good reserves depth with 2015 draftees Bailey Williams and Kieran Collins, 2016 draftees Griffin Logue and Luke Ryan and new recruits Cam O'Shea and Jackson Thurlow.

Rating
Stronger backline than last season with Murphy returning, the addition of Henderson and Birchall to the best 22 and more depth. Would've liked an elite defender.
9/10

Midfield
Midfield is pretty similar to last season. Dom Tyson has come in as a replacement for a traded Tom Liberatore. Lost some depth in Honeychurch, Jong and Webb. The dogs have brought in Hartung, Masten, Lang and Hannan as depth. Hunter, Tyson and Macrae will be pushing All-Australian honours in 2017 while Bont will is pretty much a lock. Picken will be a consistent contributor who will give it his all every week and Daniel will continue to improve. Dunkley is unlucky to miss the best 22 and will improve on his debut season. Brad Lynch will also improve as a second season rookie and Declan Hamilton will need to improve a lot to be on the list for the 2018 season.

Rating
The core of the midfield is pretty much the same with Tyson replacing Libba. Also have better depth players. In the future the dogs will look for a best 22 mid to replace Picken in the next couple of years.
9/10

Forward line
The dogs lost star player Jake Stringer to salary issues after a down 2016 season and third tall workhorse Stewart Crameri. To replace them the dogs brought in Adelaide duo Tom Lynch and Taylor Walker. The dogs have also brought in 2016 draftee Ben Long as a small forward and former Geelong player Daniel Menzel. In the remainder of the forward line Dahlhaus will be pushing for All-Australian next year. Dickson will be looking to replicate his strong 2016 finals form. Smith will look to play his first full season of AFL football. Tom Boyd will build on his strong Grand Final performance in 2017. In the reserves Travis Cloke has come in as needed depth. Premiership swingman Zaine Cordy will be able to play at either end. Toby Mclean will continue to build on a solid 2016 season. The dogs have also brought in Jarryd Blair as small forward depth if needed.

Rating
The Forward line is just as good as last season. Even though the dogs lost elite talent in Jake Stringer they brought in a much needed best 22 KPF.
Rating 8.5/10

Rucks
The weakest area of the team with Jordan Roughead and Darcy Cameron the only two ruckman. Roughead had a great 2016 season playing as a mobile ruckman which suits the game plan to a tee. Darcy Cameron comes in as a replacement for Tom Campbell who was traded. The dogs will be good in this area as long as Roughead doesn't become injured.

Rating
7/10
The rucks are possibly weaker than last season with the loss of Minson and Campbell and only replacing them with a rookie drafted ruckman.

Overall
The dogs have improved in the backline whilst adding depth to their forward line and midfield. The loss of Libba, Stringer and Crameri were big but I think we have brought in enough depth and quality players to go back to back in 2017. The only problem would be if Roughead gets injured and we would have to play rookie drafted Darcy Cameron. The dogs will push for the premiership in 2017 and will almost certainly be in the top 4 in 2017.

DRAFT PICKS
Pick 25 - Geelong
Harrison Macreadie - Henty

Three reasons, one, i like him, two I see him as a replacement for the aging Harry Taylor and Tom Lonergan in my backline, and three I feel he was the most likely of my next few to be taken Port at the next pick before my two...

Pick 27 - Geelong
Kobe Mutch - Bendigo Pioneers

Was after a couple of mids at these picks and Mutch sounds like the most balanced mid still available - can play both inside and out, and has been consistent all year. Seems a fairly safe pick...

Pick 28 - Geelong
Jordan Gallucci - Eastern Rangers

Gallucci seems more of an x-factor type with speed and explosiveness - a different type of mid to Mutch. Can also play forward or back, so flexibility a bonus...

Pick 38 - Geelong
Sam Walker - Glenelg

Not knowing too much about the players around this pick, it seemed best to get someone rated "next best" and when I read Snoop's description of him being arguably the best kick in the draft, it's hard to go past someone like that coming off the back half...

Rookie Pick 16 - Geelong
Jeremy Goddard (Claremont)

Can't believe that a guy who Quigley rated as the number 1 pick at the start of the year, dominated the ruck in an AFL Academy game against VFL All-Stars, had a 44 hitout, 16 disposal, 7 mark and 5 tackle game in a WAFL Colts Grand Final and tested as well as he did, albeit at the state screening, won't be taken in the National Draft. Surely you can wait a few years for a ruckman like that...

Rookie Pick 34 - Geelong
Luke Strnadica (East Fremantle)

After a key forward here who has some time before needing to replace an aging Tomahawk, and Strnadica was highly rated before the start of the year. Had a fairly average year, but has plenty of time to develop here.

LIST ANALYSIS
Backline

Lonergan and Taylor remain the pillars of defence, but have been joined by some runners. Yeo will play third tall in defence, but produce a lot of run with Hibberd, Goddard and Smith as well. Ruggles remains on the bench to play the lockdown role, which would allow one of Goddard or Yeo to push into the midfield. Hansen, Gardner, Jaksch, Roberts and Macreadie provide some very good KPD depth, with the Hoff also able to swing back if needed. Crozier is added as some running depth, and Walker drafted as a replacement for the runers in future with his elite kicking.

Midfield
Smith and Stanley remain as the two rucks/resting forwards, with Minson added in case of injury as a DFA and Buzza and Goddard hopefully developing over the next 3-4 years. Obviously losing Dangerfield and Selwood is a blow, but one softened by the introduction of some real talent through there. Gaff, Duncan and Gibson provide the wing rotations and a huge amount of run and carry, while Viney, Gray, Ebert and Sheed provide some ball-winning grunt through the guts. A much more youthful spread through the midfield without losing too much talent from the top. Obviously Goddard, Yeo, Murdoch and Grigg can also run through there. A very well spread midfield that would be hard to stop. Plenty of young depth as well, with another 8 or so guys developing in the twos including highly rated draftees Mutch and Gallucci, who i was stoked to pick up at 28.

Forwardline
Again, have kept the talls as they are with Hawkins and Stanley/Smith, but have also introduced Westhoff as a floating tall to play wherever needed, starting up forward. Allows Smith and Stanley to have time off the ground also. Breust was an early target of mine and got him to play as the dangerous stay at home forward, with Fasolo and Murdoch running around the feet. Also see Gray, Gibson and Goddard spending time up forward to kick some goals also. Don't particularly rate Black but he's there as KPF depth, along with Hansen and Strnadica as he develops. There is a large number of little guys who I always get confused who plays where (Gregson, GHS, Cowan, Bews, Cunico).

Overall
I rate Geelong but feel they have 7 or 8 guys holding up the team and a lot of fairly average depth, so I have tried to improve the overall quality of the list by sacrificing the top end (Danger) and improving players 10-22 which I feel I have done hugely. Even by replacing Danger and Selwood with Viney and Gray, I don't feel I have lost a huge amount. Having four picks inside the top 40 was also a good boost for the future. Very happy with the list I now have...

19: Picks 26 and 84 for Matt Crouch and Pick 62 (Richmond)

List Analysis:
Backline:
While we lost some quality players such as Talia, Smith and Hartigan, we used what we got for them to strengthen our team in other ways, New recruits such as Bulldog duo Marcus Adams and Matt Suckling help cover our losses and Mitch Brown was a good DFA pick up. Still good, slightly worse than last year but with players like Lever, Laird and Adams continuing to grow as players there wont be much loss 8/10

Midfield: We have heavily improved our midfield which was our main goal, our midfield was already decent but not up to top 4 standard like the rest of our team was, i was thrilled when the McGovern-Zaharakis deal got done as Zaharakis was one of the players i wanted most this trade period, he was just what we were looking for in our team, the addition of Taylor Adams also helps our midfield and pushes it into the elite. We also picked up some good depth players such as Levi Greenwood, the Hawthorn duo of Brendan Whitecross and Will Langford, Jacob Townsend and drafted good midfielders such as Patrick Lipiniski and Louis Cunningham, Our midfield was the most improved section of our team this trade period 9/10

Forward: While having changed a lot about our forward line, it is still the same level of quality that it was before the trade period, despite seeing great players such as Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins and Tom Lynch depart we have picked up two of the best forwards in the game who are Jake Stringer and Jack Riewoldt. We also got traded other good forwards such as Shaun Higgins, Jesse White and Bailey Dale. With the quality small forward duo of Eddie Betts (probably the best small forward in the game) and Charlie Cameron, and the draft additions of Elliott Himmelberg and Father/Son draftee Ben Jarman, The forward line is still one of the best in the league 9.5/10

Ruck: Quality ruckman Sam Jacobs remains at the team, and still should have a few years left in his career, we said goodbye to Reilly O'Brien, but got a new backup ruckman in Jarrod Witts who i believe would be a good replacement if Jacobs goes down. 9/10

Draftees:
Pick 52:
Louis Cunningham: I wanted to get an outside/rebounding player and he was the best available, decent pick 7/10
Pick 58: Elliott Himmelberg: Rate him highly, can play both KPD and KPF and looks to be a great player in the future 9/10
Pick 62: Patrick Lipinski: Quality pick for a pick 62, absolute steal considering in the real draft he got drafted at #28, looks to be a real good midfielder 10/10
Pick 65: Ben Jarman: Glad to have our first ever Father/Son pick, we also needed another small forward or two considering the loss of Milera and Knight 8.5/10
Pick 75: Liam Mackie: From here on i wanted to pick local players and he impressed me so i picked him 7.5/10
Pick 79: Jamie Hampton: Considering he is the brother of Curtly who plays for us and at this point you really don't know if you're going to get a good player or not i decided to pick him 7/10
Rookie pick 13: Callan Wellings: Decent looking local midfielder, could turn out to be a good player 7.5/10
Rookie pick 31: Tyson Stengle: Local small forward and could have done with another small forward on the team for depth, Looks like he could be pretty good 8/10

Overall: It has been a pretty crazy trade period for the crows, even though they lost some of their best players, it was a pretty succesful trade period as their team looks in a better position than last year because they have picked up some star players, and have a pretty young team. They should expect to finish in the top 4 next year, and maybe even have a crack at their 3rd flag. 9/10

GWS Giants

I haven't got time to do an analysis on every trade and pick. My aim was to improve the Giants so they are ready to take the next step in the coming 2-3 years and win a flag or two or three. I think I've done that as this team would be bloody hard to stop!

The midfield is now loaded like very few in the history of the game - J Selwood, S Mitchell, Ward, Shiel, Mundy and Fyfe playing as the high half forward pushing into the midfield and drifting forward as an extra tall.

The forward line has amazing goal scoring power with the best forward in the league (Buddy), Patton who looks like he's about to explode in 2017, Tippett as a third tall/second ruck, Stevie J to create headaches and Deledio plus Fyfe. The defence has also improved with the addition of the best intercept mark in the league (J McGovern). Scary depth too with Guthrie, Griffen, Hopper, J Martin on the bench and D Thomas, Menegola, L McCarthy, T McKenzie, Harbrow, Spurr waiting for an opportunity.

Pretty happy with getting youngsters Powell-Pepper, Daicos, Gorter, Uebergang and Narkle too.

Thanks to those who were happy to do lots of trading.

1. A rating on the coach's performance out of 10
2. Some comment regarding the coach's progress
3. Some suggestions regarding how you would've approached the situation with the same club.

---

*5/10 being a rough median without averaging all the numbers out.

----

Gold Coast:
1. 5/10
2. Solid draft with list needs reasonably well met and value added average-good. Setterfield at 6 is a particularly good get, Garthwaite at 50 may turn out well, McLarty, Bolton and Fox as rookies also solid. Trading relative for me in the negative on value + quality of ins/outs. Trades 4), 8), 9) among the better trades.
3. Needs more star power and more quality experience.

--
Essendon:
1. 8/10
2. Solid draft with Tiziani late and S.Darcy my favourite picks. Trading was good in parts, not as good in other parts, trades 3, 4, 5, 6 were the better trades.
3. I like the general view of trading towards making the list stronger - giving up several pieces for a greater piece. I say keep that strategy up and the list can continue to improve. From a list needs perspective slightly better balanced. Cameron and Wingard make that front half look a lot more formidable and Heeney and Petracca also are excellent pieces as mid/fwds. I'd just want to add a premium ruck to the fold.

--
Richmond:
1. 4/10
2. Trades 8-14 are more to my liking than the other trades with Goldstein, Vince, Thompson and D.Rich gets I like at those prices. I've never been one for trading up the draft with picks typically overrated relative to established players. Through the draft Perryman is the selection I really like but the other ones relatively I'm not as keen on.
3. Get a worthwhile key forward or two (tough going without Riewoldt) and make some moves if possible for some better young players from opposition teams and shuffle the deck some more with Richmond's young talent for the most part not impressing me.

--
Melbourne:
1. 2/10 (would be helpful next time if all trades were listed as it took time to compare against Melbourne's team list and track down trades)
2. Some under the radar additions I like. Ricky Henderson, Ben Ronke, Toby Nankervis. Otherwise the net loss is much greater than the net gain. Several of the losses trouble me: Viney, Jones, Vince, Petracca, O.McDonald among others. It's not a list I feel as comfortable with as Melbourne's current list.
3. I'd hold off on moving established players and young players who look like potential guns. More high end talent who can contribute now needed with Melbourne fans wanting to see finals footy.

--
Collingwood:
1. 10/10
2. Solid draft with Hayward and Walker (though undrafted) the two I like for value, the others ok enough without being my picks. The trading is what I like from Collingwood and what has set Collingwood apart in this game. Established players were added and the best 22 was enhanced with the tall core of Talia, Reid, Moore, Jenkins and Grundy much nicer than what Collingwood in reality have and a good balance across the best 22 also exists that doesn't in Collingwood's actual team. McVeigh down back for experience and skills, Hartlett for outside run and hurt factor and Greene up forward for another really good forward who can go through the midfield. What made Collingwood's trading great was that best 22 enhanced, list talent was upgraded but then it was all done in positions of relative list needed which makes it successful. Other than the Langdon, Fasolo and S.Reid trades Collingwood gained much more than it lost.
3. Keep going after players who improve the clubs best 22.

--
Fremantle:
1. 2/10
2. A mixed bag. Relatively liked the (national) draft with a good blend of mature agers later and Romensky a good value get. Rookie draft not so much. Barrett as a DFA good get and can play. Some positive trades, Langdon + + Miles + Lonergan trades relatively positive trades. Losses of Fyfe hurts a lot and while necessary for rebuilding, losing Sandilands, Mundy and Ibbotson dispiriting.
3. It's all about adding established young players from here. The likes of O'Rourke, Corr, Melksham particularly I'm not big on. More of a focus on gaining best 22 or future best 22 players is needed.

--
Hawthorn:
1. 2/10
2. Not huge on any of the additions through the draft. Graham is the relatively more solid. The others are more speculative. Through trade some substantial losses. Liberatore was a good get, Sheridan trade relatively for me in the positive. But losses of Breust, Birchall, Gunston hurt a lot. Trades of Douglas and Henderson would have me pulling out my hair, like them both. As has been Hawthorn's offseason philosophy for a long time. Men win. An offseason that takes Hawthorn from premiership contender to probably missing the top 8.
3. Giving up too much to get into the draft. Established players need to be rated more highly and young established players need adding if the focus is long term.

--
Western Bulldogs
1. 10/10
2. Picks ok value consistently across picks without any real home run choices where I see exceptional value. What was exceptional was the trading. Not much lost with Stringer and to lesser extents Crameri and Suckling lost. I flat out love the trading away of youngish, unproven players for established players who can improve a best 22. Improved best 22 and improved probability of going back to back. Well done.
3. Keep trading unproven youth for players who enhance clubs best 22. That's what it's all about.

--
Geelong
1. 2/10
2. Not a draft I'm keen on. Mutch is the only selection I like on value, Gallucci maybe speculatively given attributes. Other selections aren't great. Trading away Dangerfield, J.Selwood, Blicavs and Guthrie is disastrous with compensation not sufficient. Trades for Jack Viney, Luke Breust and Robbie Gray excellent. Overall though net losses much greater than net gains.
3. Don't trade star power, trade for star power. Particularly with Geelong being in a good situation to contend in 2017.

--
Carlton
1. 5/10
2. Fisher + Begley solid choices. With the others overlooked it's not an ideal group. Trades of Murphy + D.Thomas unwise for such late picks. The Ablett and S.Reid trades were the good ones. Net gains and net losses roughly counteract one another overall.
3. Keep gaining established players and don't be so quick to move your own established players, particularly if the currency in return is so little.

--
Adelaide
1. 4/10
2. Draft choices solid. Same story as in above situations regarding trades. I like the trades were established players are traded in, don't like the trades where the established high level performer is traded out. More lost than gained with more best 22 standard players by my count leaving the coming.
3. Keep the established, high level players and trade for those that you can. A must do as a top 8 side and for all teams really.

--
GWS
1. 1/10
2. Picks unimpressive and have lost a huge opportunity to capitalise on value that GWS had in the form of such a long list of special players through the clubs academy. I love the list of established players added but this is one of the rare times I would say that the established players added is too much to the cost of future success. GWS have such an overwhelmingly dominating list now that they're favourites to win the 2017 flag. Some great, great long term pieces in the form of young established have been lost over the long term at the cost of in some cases small upgrades, in other cases slight downgrades. The result of this is a much shortened premiership window with an unnecessary urgency to win the flag now. GWS are the only team in the competition who don't require such a stance and as such I have to penalise GWS with a poor grade.
3. Get the value through the academies. Have the picks needed to get them. Stick by the young established players. The players to trade out in GWS situation are those outside best 22 types with talent - those are the players who should be moved for players who can enhance the clubs best 22.

--
West Coast
1. 10/10 (trade grade only with draft picks not listed). If a good draft was had I'd move this up to a 10 but that information is not available and as such can't do that.
2. Adding Dangerfield, Coniglio, Lobb, Tomlinson and Blicavs in a monumental win. Gaff is a loss and Mitchell is a loss, but seriously great trading made that has substantially elevated the quality of the clubs best 22. Well done.
3. Keep improving your best 22. Your approach to trading is right and your team is better as a result.

--
North Melbourne
1. Can't grade on picks not seeing any. Trade grade: 3/10.
2. Love the addition of Gawn. That's a won trade. Getting as much for Clarke as you did, getting pick 3 in that Durdin + Daw trade and that future 2nd round pick for Z.Jones + Cunningham trade I like. Otherwise I wasn't keen on the other moves made. The compensation for players lost otherwise was not sufficient. Trade of Goldstein is not one I would have made and really strongly dislike, he should have been kept, even after adding Gawn unless a special standard young, franchise quality key forward was on offer.
3. While North need to get younger established young players is a better, higher % way to do it than through the draft. The trades for me where things went wrong was when trying to move up the draft, too high of a weighting placed on moving up the draft order is reason for grade I gave.

--
Port Adelaide
1. 4/10 (trade grade only given no picks listed)
2. Gibbs was a good get and also like the Motlop addition. Otherwise net loss slightly greater than net gain through trade with Gray particularly a big loss.
3. While this applies to almost all playing this game, too trigger happy with the clubs better players. Don't let established, high level players go unless you're getting clearly better in return. Several pieces for one doesn't make a trade winning. The focus should be the vast majority of the time on getting the best piece/best player in a deal.

--
Sydney
1. 1/10
2. Not sure what I'm looking at with no picks or trades listed. Looking at the player absenses and specifically the weakened key position stocks and beyond Sandilands weakened ruck stocks, I'm not liking the look of this side. The top end appears much weaker than Sydney's from a quick peek.
3. Keep your better players, trade to improve club best 22.

--
Brisbane
1. 5/10
2. Really like the draft. Scheer + Drew both strong gets. Stewart late can also represent value. Olango as a rookie I feel is a long shot, but if three players come out of a draft from those picks. Brisbane have done well. Trades on the other hand I'm not keen on the value. The losses of Rockliff and Rich I feel works against Brisbane who need more established players on a list that needs the support of veterans to have any shot at developing. The Houli and Swallow trades are the only ones on value I like, otherwise in the value battle Brisbane lost out in most of the other trades.
3. Go for more established players. Brisbane need some players other than Stefan Martin over 27 to experience any development. More established young players also needed, with this needing to make up the clubs greater core, even if it means trading away the clubs young, more speculative talent to make it happen.

--
St Kilda
1. Trade grade: 5/10
2. No information on picks so can't grade on that. Value gained + lost around equal in each trade. Little gained, little lost.
3. Get more involved and take some more risks. Trade some young speculative players for established young players is direction Saints need to take.

Dammit. 2/10. Thought i did quite well. oh well. I don't really rate Bruest that high. He's no game changer. I agree Gunston is a massive loss but i needed another KPF as there is a chance Roughead may never play again. Both the forwards i added from that trade are quality(especially Bruce). Birchall is one player that has been dipping in form. Sheridan takes his place nicely. I'm okay with slipping out the eight. 4 years time is where i'm aiming.

Yeah seems he's graded all the teams rebuilding or looking to the future badly

If you go through trade history around 80% of the time I'd estimate it's the team that gets the established player in those pick for player deals. And it's the same story with player for player deals, the team getting the best player. They're so often the winning deals.

The draft is a lottery. High picks are nice to have and lots of picks can be nice if you pick the eyes out of the draft and have an outstanding recruiting team, but even if you have all that, if you have nothing on your list in terms of experience and veteran leadership they're not getting anywhere - see Carlton pre Judd, Melbourne pre Roos, Richmond over the years, Brisbane, GWS before Mumford, Gold Coast etc.

So given this view, my gradings/comments will be heavily slanted towards those who have traded for the best players in the various deals. Over time I expect if you came back 5 or 10 years from now this comments would show through more clearly.

But being a trade game of this nature. It's so subjective.

The next person will have a different perspective and different values which could translate to completely contrasting grades/comments.
