Solomon Retires

ordinary player, ordinary bloke, inflatable toughguy and list clogger.
no loss to the game

Everyone loves an internet tough guy

The depressing thing for Freo is that Solomon probably _is_ the hardest, toughest player they have ever had.

The fact that the hardest player you have had is a bloke who you recruited from over east at the age of 27 and who played 50 games doesn't seem strange to you?

You want players who are like that to be 200+ game types who are long term leaders of the club. You want players with that kind of hardness and that kind of physical presence to be your captain. You want players like that to set the standard for the club for not just the term of there playing career but generations after.

No disrespect to Shaun McManus, but the fact that you bring him up in this discussion is pretty much my point.

I would have thought its pretty clear that I am having a dig at Freo's retired heroes. McManus was neither tough nor skillful. After 15 years the best you have is Dean Solomon. That would be like Carlton saying Mick Martyn was there hardest player of his generation.

You sir, are an idiot.

Good riddance, wannabe thug and gutless sniper

You have always been silly..

Re: Solomon calling it quits?

If he had done the decent thing and retired before lists closed, you'd have and extra rookie to choose from and would have been able to replace Solomon in the National Draft.
It certainly doesn't feel like just over three years ago when Fremantle secured both Dean Solomon and Chris Tarrant on the same day, and they actually thought they were a very good chance to win the 2007 premiership after making the 2006 Preliminary Final which was their highest ever finish.
Yeah, they might have even ended up with that Josh Thomas superstar.
What does he have to do with this topic? According to Matt Burgan's phantom draft, Thomas was expected to be selected between pick #30 and pick #37, but Collingwood were fortunate enough to use pick #75 to get him. What does that have to do with anything?

For those saying he should have retired before the draft...

Solomon, 30, was well ahead in his pre-season program leading into Christmas when an innocuous incident during a handball drill further damaged his reconstructed right knee.
After three attempts to get the knee right, Solomon said he had been left with no option but to retire and undergo a post-football operation to ensure he isn’t hindered later in life.

Looks like maybe you should all keep quiet until you know the facts.

LOL at all these keyboard heroes saying that he had no skill/class. You don't retire a 200+ game premiership player in this day and age without a serious dose of talent.

He's the sort of player every supporter would love if he was playing for their team. Tough and courageous, with the ability to physically hurt the opposition - which he often did.

Will be a huge loss for the Dockers imo. The good news for Freo fans is that he'll be spending the next year working with their younger players tho. If he can impart his style onto them, they'll have a very physical unit in coming years.

Re: Solomon calling it quits?

I never liked him.

If Solomon was hard and fair, then it might have been a different case.

Solomon's tribunal record says a bit about his game...

I'm looking forward to seeing Garry Lyon's article bemoaning the loss of the second Glen Archer.

Well there's a surprise:rolleyes:

No doubt you would sing the praises of David Rhys-Jones however.

Re: Solomon calling it quits?

like most thought he played his best footy when essendon were flying early in the last decade.

was a tough as they came, i dont think you have to have top line skills to be remembered as a great player , was more workman like and had the grunt and agressiveness on top of that to top it off, if you play 200 plus games with a game style like that, then you deserve all the credit you can get.

i dont think he was overly dirty , that ling hit probably put a bit of a mark against him. He was always hard at the man and the ball.

You appear to have neglected on your profile to tell us all that you play afl football

I disagree. Kerr is a fine example of a gutless sniper. Remember what he did to Scott West? Pick apart your own back yard before slogging off at other clubs' players.

he's also punched two players in the groin:eek:

btw for those ppl saying soloman was the only 'hard' player freo has had troy cook says hello. if you dont know who he is look up mitchell white and ask him, i'm pretty sure he does..

Yes you can. You just have to be a role player. Leigh Brown the perfect example. Your second paragraph sums him up but don't pretend he had class or was a very skillful player.

I take my hat off to you Sir, it's great that an opposition supporter can put bias aside & make a sensible comment about another teams player. :thumbsu:

Best thing he ever did was give me a Gary Ablett Snr poster when I was a kid!! :thumbsu:

Good post. Agree fully.

A tough man played his role I think we forget he used to integral part of the bombers great 2000 team.

Congrats to the guy 200 games in any language is brilliant.

Was a bit harsh on lingy but thats football sometimes - if we sanitise it anymore Soccer will have more intenseness.

My thoughts exactly, I wasn't going to bust it out again but these Geelong posters are just so hell bent on harping on the Solomon-Ling issue and perhaps needs some perspective;

milburn.jpg

At least Solly was repentant about his actions, I think the pic shows Milburn's thoughts on his.

Pathetic.

As far as Solomon goes he was far from my favourite player, but I respected him for his toughness and versatility. Pretty good career at the end of the day.

What a pathetic comparison. The Milburn incident and Solomon incident were nothing alike, for the following reasons:

1. The ball was between Milburn and Silvagni. Look at the second photo you posted. The ball spilled out of Silvagni's hands as contact was made. Even Sergio Silvagni said on radio after that game that he had no problem with what Milburn did. In the Solomon incident, Ling had disposed of the ball before Solomon hit him, and therefore should never have expected any contact.

2. Silvagni only copped concussion from that incident, and played the next week. Ling suffered a compressed fracture of the cheekbone, and missed two games.

I think you'll find Milburn was repentant about his actions that day too, especially what he did after the fact.

I also find it hilarious how some people are telling Geelong fans to get over the Solomon-Ling incident because it happened two years ago, yet they continue to bring up either the Mooney incident from the same game, the Ling-Buckley incident from 8 years ago, or the Milburn incident that happened 9 years ago. Hypocrites much?

Hence the reason people bring up the old incidents

Firstly, love your Gear Ablett Snr quote. He was the best player I have ever seen and I have got the book at home where he makes this statement. As for the Solly and Milburn stuff - just leave it where it belongs....in the past.

Good career Solly and thanks for your efforts at Freo.

blah, blah, blah

Seriously, who gives a shit.

This is about a 200+ game premiership player who has had his career cut short by injury.

Take your petty crap to your home board.

Great Career by Solly, Always attacked the ball hard and put his body on the line. Will miss that from our game this year and I hope some of our youngins learn from him.

Re: Solomon calling it quits?

Anyone calling him a bad bloke is pathetic, Ramanauskis said without his friendship he is not sure he would have made it through the therapy.
As for not a tough nut... wow seriously, so many internet warriors on this site.
Sorry for your bad news Freo :) Good luck hope you have a good year.
