Thinking about it there must be something to the losses after the bye. I've got a simple solution. 2 bye rounds. 1st week 5 games played so 10 teams play 8 have the bye. 2nd week 4 games played so 8 teams play 10 have the bye.

1st Week No Thursday games. 1x Fri night, 2x Sat day, 1 x Sat night, 1 x Sun day. Each state (besides Vic) has 2 teams: WA, SA, QLD, NSW! Each week of the Bye QLD and NSW will have one team play a home game, whilst other gets a bye. The following week the remaining team gets a home game to ensure these rugby states have a game each week so footys still in town. WA and SA can cop having a week free of footy no big deal

This way EVERY single team only plays another team also coming off a bye so no advantages either way. To offset the homeground advantage for interstate teams they would be matched with an equivalent team from the previous year. Eg: Brisbane face off against the Dees? Gold Coast the following round face off against the Blues? Obviously the season hasn't finished but say Brisbane finish 3rd and Dee's are 4th that's fair enough

Also no one has to go to meth head central so Cats don't get an unfair advantage.

The round with only 8 teams playing so 4 games could be chosen from the upper tier so they're more likely to be watched.

Surely this is quicker and painless and doesn't drag out and no one gets a leg up. Thoughts?

The bye sucks, just have all the AFL teams take the same week off.

Play the under 18's carnival that weekend and make it full coverage. (Yes i know it goes for longer but show case it more for that week)
Also have a state of Origin for players who aren't on an AFL list from VFL, SANFL, WAFL & Allies (VFL teams) round robin games starting on Thursday night to Sunday.
Mid season draft held the week after the bye weekend.

Here is my solution to fix the bye and the Fixture.

  • Rounds 1 - 17 Each club plays each other ONCE.
  • After 17 Rounds there is a bye. This can be done as about 15 years ago they went 22 rounds without one
  • During that bye round, the AFL makes the fixture for the remaining double up teams. Use the same ranking system as it is now i.e. top 6 have harder double ups etc.
This way there is a complete and fair fixture each season. There will be no overly soft runs home for sides and it would also keep interest in the game going. As the top 6 will have more back end games against each other then it really heats up the race for top 4. The middle six are in the race for the finals and it will matter who wins and loses. Bottom 6 would be playing for peanuts but by round 18ish of you are bottom 4 you are already looking to book your September trip away.

Have a look at other endurance sports like the tour de France. On their days off they still ride so their bodies don't shut down. The AFL teams probably need at least a tackle free hit out.
