Re: Some assistant coach names appearing

In an ideal world I would be so rich I could sponsor the club with exorbitant sums of money, and make pronouncements about the quality of coaching and administration with impunity.

Sadly the ideal and real worlds seem to be out of alignment ...

Re: Some assistant coach names appearing

For mine, it is not about the head coach we get, rather who we have supporting him that will change things!

Head Coach: Chris Scott/Peter Johnas/Sean Welhman/Andrew Jarman/Craig Bradley/Dean Wallis
Forward Coach: Andrew Jarman/Peter Johnas/Brett Montgomery
Midfield Coach: Garry Hocking/Craig Bradley/Brett Montgomery
Back Coach: Adam Kingsley
Ruck Coach: Matty Primus
Laidley Role: Dean Laidley

I think Kingsley has brought together a good back six, Primus is the best assistant we have on board now but he becomes a specailist ruck coach, We go after Scott hard, if he is no good, go after blokes that know success, Jonas, Welhman, Bradley, Walis. Get a good motivator as our forward coach and get a new midfield coach, Hocking is my choice if he is happy with his roll at the moment, Bradley or Montgomery become prime targets!

I think when Choco was under fire last year I mentioned Jarman as a coach I would like to see at Port, he does get the best out of his players and his results with North were all good from what was a strugling club prior to Jarmans arival and post Jamrman's departure!

Man, in an ideal world I'd be so rich that I would still be able to have the coach sacked! And then I'd rehire him later. :D I'd be a regular George Steinbrenner.

And assistants? They'd be like sprinkles on the ice-cream.

Scott's name has been mentioned on here and other boards, but really is there much incentive for any assistant coach to move to another assistant coaching role unless he thought the head coaching position would soon be available (e.g., Harvs from Essendon to Freo when Connolly was wobbly)?

I'd of thought we'd have more than enough cash to keep him if money was his only objective.

Only other good reason I can think of is family/personal.

You did read that post closely enough to see RIT nominated Scott as a head coach? He didn't list him in any of the assistant coaching positions.

Re: Some assistant coach names appearing

Andrew Jarman? he failed as an SANFL coach and is by all reports failing as a WAFL coach.

Don't want A.Jarman anywhere near our box. But if we could get a large enough box so Darren Jarman could fit inside, then I would take him.

North were a bottom 4 side pre Jarman and a top 3 side when Jarman had the helm, now jarman has left and a good football brain and a great coach in Healy has the side, they are barely a top 5 side!

As for WAFL coaching, he went to Perth, the basketcase of WAFL football. He has turned them in to a strugling club, into a club with hope and Bright pastures over the hill!

+1
Not on the names you have selected but the theory.. get the coach surrounded by the best group of assistant coaches we can muster.

Im surprised that nobody has mentioned Rick McGowan as before he left for Hawthorn he was rated by many here on the forum as a sound assistant to chocolate.

Re: Some assistant coach names appearing

Stephen Silvagni has quit the Saints as an assistant, but is not saying why.

Silvagni pulls plug on Saints

<snip>

Asked if he still harboured hopes of coaching in his own right, he said: "I've got some opportunities I'm looking at."

<snip>

Silvagni was reluctant to expand on his decision, with the finals just five weeks away. It is not known if the players know of his decision.

<snip>

He is not expected to return to Carlton.

I would love to have SoS at PAFC in any capacity.

I supported Carlton in the AFL pre PAFC, and he was easily one of my favourite players.

He has now done a great job and tighening up St Kilda's defensive style and would be great at PAFC as a defense coach. Not sure on his abilities as Head Coach but IMO he is worth the risk.

Would be hard to get him out of Melbourne though. I think he has some offers on the table... PAFC may have made enquiries to him but IMO I reckon Essendon are sounding him out to replace Knights.:thumbsu:

Wow!

Let's hope this is not just a coincidence.

Is it too late to change my vote on the "Will Primus get the gig" poll?

Oddly of all names listed Andrew Jarman is the one I'd prefer to see at the helm.
  1. He is a good coach, and a good communicator with the media.
  2. He comes from Adelaide so no homesickness issues in future years.
  3. The limited amount we can pay is still a step up from WAFL/SANFL salaries.
  4. He is no 'yes' man, he would go through our football department like the Terminator.
I also have personal reasons. Both of us had kids at a local surf club some years ago and when we were all at a junior carnival and I was wearing my Port shirt I tripped over a tent rope. I fell flat on my face in the sand, right in front of Jars. He said something like "Serves you right wearing that." So I really want to walk up to him in the Hanger while he's wearing our colours and say something witty like "Looks good on you". Of course I'm probably one of 5,000 waiting to do that.

Re: Some assistant coach names appearing

Yeah Forza that's how I read it too, maybe a grammatical thing?

I still maintain SoS should be one of our main targets, experience, great AFL name, identifiable in Melbourne.

Actually I was hoping by now we would have heard of some names thrown into the hat?

When I remember how good Silvagni was and his playing style it reminds me of how Surj plays now. Not that I am saying he is as good as SOS but the game style is remarkably similar. SOS strikes me as the type of person that commands respect with saying very little.

I think SOS would be a wonderful addition but I'm not going to connect things that don't connect.

Powerstuff, Jarman reminds me of the Akermanis of Adelaide, but recently Aker has gone on to even worse levels :)

I think his jockular style makes him lose a bit of credibility tbh

If Port are using the Stride approach, they would just have completed the analysis of potential candidates, so may not have approached anyone officially yet.

Port also made it clear that the process would be kept as confidential as possible, so we are relying on leaks for information. Maybe if the board members are finger-pointing over the Williams fiasco as Rucci has suggested, we'll get some Rudd leaks soon enough. :p

Brett Ratten is going to get the arse and a return to Princess Park for SOS??

This is pretty amazing that 5 weeks out from the campaign to win the flag he leaves. He either has had a major falling out at St Kilda or has been given a job at a club and wants to start shaping his list and doesn't want to be conflicted about coaching down at St Kilda. Or he has a big opportunity away from footy.

Edit: Ok looks like he will coach out the year so maybe he doesn't have a job guaranteed.
Either way I can't see him leaving Victoria. Will have to visit the St Kilda and Carlton boards to check out the rumours.

As did Williams' abrasivenes, however if you win games, all else is irrelivant!

You won't hear any official names - just speculation and rumour - so stay on BF for your fix.

You might be right FR but the A Jarman who was sacked from the Camrys for Aker type indiscretions is IMO long gone.
He has been a pretty professional official and even media character for some time. Remembering this guy hears every little bit of SA footy gossip he has treated us surprisingly even-handedly over some years. We haven't seen the Aker style betrayal of confidences/burning of bridges.

A fair assessment, but if he got the job it would prove to me that we are here for a good time and not a long time and it would almost convince me not to renew my membership.
