I don't have a problem with Stevo's punishment, it's deserved.

I do have a problem with the AFL acting holier than thou and hanging a kid out to dry on an issue they have absolutely no leg to stand on.
Yep I understand, but the rule applies to all players, equally.
Its not a 19 year old rule

While the AFL can be accused of being conflicted in many areas, not sure that can be said about this one

It happened. They just trotted out that Captain Serious t-rd Dillon who prattled on for a while then exited with haste. Penalty about right though. Just would have been nice to have it start as soon as he self-reported to get a run into the finals.

OK -thanks...........I just had the live event coming up screen the whole time.

Can't believe this - this is all so seriously stupid that it's hard to believe any AFL footballer (no matter the IQ) could blow their season up - and possibly their whole team's -for less than $50 of "flutters." after all the past instances. And of course it had to be one of our top few form players

We really need to find a way to get Billy up and firing for the next 10 weeks.

I was just making a comparison. Again he is only 1 player and as good as he is he doesn’t have the influence of a Wayne Carey or Franklin to suggest that we can’t compete without him. Elliot seems the likely replacement. You think De Goey plays as a full-time forward now. We get Adams back and keep Sier in the midfield. Just make adjustments.

Well, I guess we will have to wait and see how things pan out. I have concerns though. Yes he is one player, but in my mind one of our key players. MAybe Daicos can channel some of his dads magic?

He is obviously a gambler, and on his wage and the value of the bet it was not done for financial gain. He could be addicted and for those types it's something deeper that has it's hold on you - not just the prospect of financial gain.
I'm not debating the why, that's not for me to say. Knew he was a gambler when he and Daics were out at the casino very late following our game on the Gold Coast last year. Never thought he'd do this though. Disappointing.

All that for $36 worth of bets lol

I wonder if his new contract is still match payment based in his 2nd year (as per draftee contracts)? Will really hit his hip pocket if it is.

What a dumb thing to do. Listening to what he was actually betting on, eg. Himself to kick goals, hmmm! He is lucky he isnt missing 22 matches. I wouldn't play him again this year. No footy for 10 weeks, to then come straight in and play finals footy, can't see that happening. Send him away from the footy environment for awhile, head overseas and come back to the club to start a early pre season. Still not sure why it took him 3 bets to get the guilts, or did panick set in that he was going to get caught so he confessed to the club. He seems a nice kid, but unfortunately his rep has taken a hit inside and outside the footy club. lt's a long road back for the young man, here's hoping he gets through it, unfortunately for the footy club, that will only be seen next year.
Good opportunity for a Daicos to come in and play a role, a maybe even get a taste of finals footy.
Hasn't a big enough price been paid? Should our club be let down further by not having him available for finals? Having him out of the team hearts the entire team. He has enough time to consider his actions and should be spurred on to repay the club in spades when he DOES return this year in the finals.

I believe this is still his first contract though, so would be.

He attended compulsory AFL rules session (which included info on betting) in early February
Less than 3 months later he placed his first bet

The session was probably sponsored by the AFL's preferred betting 'partner', might have undercut the message...

Sometimes you just need to shake your head at such things and move on. Hopefully it doesn't affect the team too much, but the dynamic of our forward line will undoubtedly suffer.

Wow. I never realised how polarising this issue was.

I think the suspension is ridiculously heavy compared to the offence, but I can see with opposition supporters and even here some people think it is warranted. They're really stupid small bets but why suspend someone for half a season for it? He was stupid, not a cheater, he was never going to make money off it, and he didn't tamper with the game . It's not like he tanked on purpose to get the results he needed for his bet to be successful.

Instinctively I would have thought a higher $ fine and 3 weeks off the game would make a lot of sense. The current punishment is just huge for 3 x $12 'joke' bets and a mistake made by a player for sheer stupidity.
This is more my position.

Seems awfully harsh, the harshness on the level of not thinking by JS.

But $36 and ten weeks just looks very lopsided.

But it is what it is.

I guess he just didn’t gamble responsibly.

Self reported on 19 May to Walsh, immediately then reported to AFL.

Bet in 3 games against Bulldogs, Essendon and StKilda.

All bets were on possessions, goals he'd kick etc. Totaled $36 in bets (3 x $12 bets). No collects.

22 matches with 12 suspended for rest of career (for any similar offence).

Can't play with VFL but can train.

Co-operated completely. Knew what he did was wrong. Incredibly remorseful.

I agree with the penalty, as l said he is lucky he is only missing 10 games. When you consider the bets he placed, on himself and other teammates, it beggars belief.
Not only that, he has dragged other teammates into this situation, they have had to be interviewed by the integrity unit, its pathetic. Hopefully this doesn't affect the guys on Sunday, but its hard to see how it won't.

Curious about why he did it???

He used a friend’s account, so he clearly knew it was wrong. The bets totaled $36, so he clearly wasn’t trying to make a fortune.

Anyway, I expect we’ll never find out. Every question about ‘why’ will be answered with a pro forma “What matters now is that what I did was stupid, I’m devastated about it, and I will do everything I can to regain the trust of my colleagues and the fans”.

I don't get why betting companies are being blamed for the poor choice here? I mean, if the only thing you could bet on in the state of Victoria was AFL, then yeah betting companies would be partially blamed. But, their are thousands of other betting markets available. Blaming betting advertising on this saga, is like blaming alcohol advertising on domestic violence.

Just avoiding the real issue.

How's everyone more concerned about what happens with who comes and replaces Stepho? I'm more concerned in that fact that this most likely isn't an isolated incident between one player, one player only. I don't want to have to go to matches and question everything that happens. **** that for a joke.

He betted on a specific margin result in one of our matches. Does this not alarm anyone else, the fact that a player in a team would do that?Surely there are other players involved for him to place these type of bets. No one would have a specific margin playing for a team and not have players within the club to get the margin result. Alarming. Concerning. Stupid.
Specific margin or a line? Big difference if it’s to win by more than x points.

Well bet on the NBA finals or cricket World cup or NRL, plenty of things to bet on. Don't bet on the AFL, especially your own self or teammates. Just dumb!! I still can't believe it.

I believe this is still his first contract though, so would be.

Contracted to 2021 I think and if so there has to have been an extension.

You could make that argument about any advertising the AFL accepts

AFL sponsored by Car companies - Hoon Driving
AFL sponsored by Food Companies - Obesity

Not sure it stacks up
Not quite of your analogies.

The AFL isn’t advertising Hoon driving, its advertising cars.
The AFL advertises gambling on footy non stop, on its matches non stop.
So said player gambled on footy as per advertising. Just shouldn’t have by league rules not by breaking the law (join driving).

You're not thinking of this the right way.

It completely changes the landscape of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bets made by others.
Hypothetically, he can directly influence the outcome of bets like margins.

38 points up and he has Pies under 40, siren goes.. he has ball in hand.. why would he kick the goal, we've won the game and his bet gets up.
