Prediction Something special is brewing on the Gold Coast in 2022/23

Lost some good players too. However I think they need 1-2 more seasons before their best young guys get to 24 and in their prime.

People are expecting WAY too much from them. Look at their core group of young guys. Give them a couple of seasons. They have been showing their first signs of improvement.

Rowell 22
Powell 23
Rosas 22
Lukosius 22
King 22
Humphrey 18
Flanders 21
Davies 21
Ballard 23
Noah Anderson 22
They've had like 4 rebuilds. How is it too much to ask to see some sort of progress? You could have pumped out a similar post with that kind of list any time over the last 15 years

Yeah they hadnt made much progress up to 2017 or there abouts and should have been better but look at the most recent set of players I listed. If these lot fail by 2025, 26 then yeah its another fail

It really depends on what you consider progress. This is our win-loss record after 15 games since Dew took over in 2018:

2018: 4-11 (Lynch and May departed at the end of this season; rebuild commences)
2019: 3-12
2020: 5.5-9.5 (COVID year aka home advantage most weeks)
2021: 5-10
2022: 7-8
2023: 7-8

Admittedly, the progress has been slower than some would have liked but there does seem to be an upward trajectory when you take the COVID disruption into consideration. Onlookers may say there has been some stagnation this year and the win-loss record would certainly suggest that but I would also add losing Touk Miller early in the season has probably cost us several wins. It's an injury that's probably cost us two wins (and a whole lot of percentage) so far and a two extra wins with a decent percentage would currently have us inside the top 6. I know every team has injuries but when you're a young mid-ladder team and you lose your captain that finished 3rd in the Brownlow the year before, it can be a devastating blow that can ruin a season.

Touk Miller is due to return this week so we should get an understanding of how much we've missed him on Saturday night. There's probably just enough time to still salvage something from this season considering we still have eight games to go but we're running out of time to make it happen. All you can do in this situation is put your head down and get to work. If we're good enough, we'll find a way.

Dew is also probably not up to it as senior coach and is going to be replaced by Dimma at the end of the season which should help The Suns considerably
After seeing the footage of Dew having a disagreement with Shaw I tend to agree. He seems to lack confidence and doesn't seem to have control in his coaching position. IF he was in control he would have nipped that shit in the bud. I think there's a rift there in the coaching department. I think he's probably not the all round coach GC would have been expecting. From where they are RN, I would highly doubt they'd take another unproven coach. Dimma seems the obvious choice if he wants to coach, or even Adam Simpson. I think they need to get someone with serious experience to lead this talented young list.

Could also consider Chris Scott (Wild Card), Ken Hinkley (Unlikely)

Rosas and Humphrey not exciting enough for you?

Humphrey is going to be a star mid. he's not a small forward. Rosas more like a Wing /HFF type.

Holman probably the only the defensive presuure applying small forward who gets regular games for GC

Ask any reasonable GC supporter, they will identify small forward as a position they lack good players.

It's called mediocrity.

The media will pump them up next year thinking they will be sure things to finally break their finals hoodoo.
Are you talking about the Gold Coast or Essendon?

It’s a shame, they’ve been in this promising ladder region all decade. From the Gazza injury in 2014 to 2019 they had large periods of uncompetitive football, so 2020-23 a lot better, and the taut home form all season was another advance. That next elusive step though...so cursed

Something has felt rather weird in recent years.

After hitting rock bottom in 2018/19 they took a step up in 2020...while 2021 was stagnation they had a 2022 which while nothing special was something they could build upon going forward. Yet they've stagnated since then. They have had good wins, but almost all of them have been at home or in Darwin. At least in 2022 they beat/pushed a couple of good teams away from home.

Their list hasn't changed much, the only loss being Rankine and their list was quite young then so only should've improved. We've seen sides zoom past them (Hawthorn for example) with less going for them and from weaker bases. Yet they're still in a similar - maybe even worse - position compared to a couple of years ago.

Their midfield on paper is one of the best in the competition. Their defence is pretty under-rated and has quality players. On paper they have a talented forward line. Yet neither Dew (who was a very highly rated assistant) or Hardwick (a three-time Premiership coach) has managed to get susbtance out of it.

This really felt like the year they'd take a step up. They had the marquee coach. The Geelong win was legitmately excellent, so was the Collingwood win and felt like the mature wins that would take them to the next level. But they've had a number of really bad losses too.

I think the problem lies in a lack of players from a winning culture. Weller was only at Freo for a couple of years. Witts was a fringe player at Collingwood. Holman and Collins recycled players. Everyone else was homegrown. Look at who Melbourne signed to take them to the next level, for example. Ditto Brisbane.

I think they have to cut out a lot of the softcocks. When was the last time Lukosius did something? Ballard's gone backwards. Powell's stagnated. King seems to lose confidence too easily (although there's no way I'm trading him...yet). I could go on.

In theory their list could really click at some point and change everything. But without someone who can set the standard and really give a **** about winning/losing (think Gawn at Melbourne or Hodge at Brisbane), where will that come from?

I've attempted to pump their tyres a bit for whatever reason in the past - I relocated to the broader region and it's heartening to see Aussie Rules taking a genuine foothold as far north of the Barassi Line as FNQ.

But they are bang out of excuses.

Hardwick rightly points the finger at a very talented midfield, but talent and depth are two different things.

Rowell, Anderson and Touk Miller are expected to do all of the heavy lifting for maybe the 3rd consecutive year (Rowell has had injuries in that time; granted). I'm not quite sure why Alex Davies didn't play more football, I assume injury woes.

Witts has been an excellent captain for the Suns for a number of seasons now but he is coming into his Autumn years. Fortunately they have Ned Moyle signed up for a few years to come; he looks promising.

I still would not be surprised to the club make a quantum leap next year; I know, it has been said before.

They could really use a Josh Dunkley type, but then again so could most clubs.

I always feel like their midfield is too small to compete on the road and in big games. A guy like Jack McRae could go alright there.
