On a brighter note to my first couple of posts on the thread it was a privilege to be in the presence of greatness at the President's Lunch last Saturday. Seeing Ray Bauskis, Craig Edwards and the legend John Gerovich awarded retrospective Bernie Naylor medals was a big highlight of the season so far.

Also on a personal note I was apparently the 1500th guest to the President's lunch for this season and was afforded the great honour of tossing the coin ahead of the League game. Sadly Peel's Brady Grey won the toss and the game.
Nice one!!

Wonder if this is the reason Jaymie Graham ruled himself out of West Coast? 🤔

If he’s after a senior AFL coaching job down the line then wouldn’t this be a step down?

Very much so. Saying that, getting some head coaching experience for 3-5 years before going back into the AFL system could be of benefit.

Yeah the only way Jaymie is coaching South is if he wants to put a senior coaching gig on his prospective AFL CV. Not completely out of the realms of possibility but high unlikely.

So the 2024 campaign has come to an end. Hard to get a real feel for what finishing 6th was. We beat Claremont and Easts, drew with Swans and came within a kick of the Royals. So our best is definitely good enough, it'll be about finding consistency under the new coach.

On that note it was good for TC to go out with a win, against his original club. Thanks Todd for all you've done over the last decade, especially 2020.

According to Peter Christie at the lunch on Saturday they've already had a couple of interviews for the coaching position and will have a couple more this week, so hopefully the right appointment is made and preparation for a 2025 return to September action can begin.

Ironic that both Souths and Freo dropped out of finals contention on the last day of the H&A season!

Any feel on which players may get picked up in the upcoming AFL draft, from any of the levels?

Jaxon Artemis seems to be the frontrunner of Souths lads, being invited to the Draft Combine is always a sign clubs are interested. Fred Rodriguez was part of the 18s squad as well might get a look. And given what they've been through this season we know the Colts lads have got strong character.

From the league side I'd say Issy Winder is most likely to get a look from an AFL club (Freo could do worse than given him a run). Aaron Drage and Ed Graham are both exception young talents (21 & 20 respectively) who could garner real interest.

Cheers mate. Was thinking Winder as well, did he drop off a bit in the back end of the season?

How did Matthew Carr's son Jaren go? Any chance of a F/S pick?

Issy had a terrific run there for a while but the last couple of games weren't quite the standard he'd set. Not sure if he was carrying an injury late in the season. Jaren was in and out of the team, looked really good at times he's still developing, might be worth a F/S late in the draft or rookie. Another year to perhaps establish himself at South might be a benefit.

Lewis Rayson, Ash Ferreira, Chase Bourne and Riley Colborne have all re-signed for 2025. Added to the skipper signing on for another 2 years and things are looking good, building solid foundations to return to Finals.

Now we just need a coach.

More quality young players re-signing with the club for 2025. Kaden Harbour, Eddie Graham, Aaron Drage and Roan O'Hehir added their names to the growing list of players choosing to remain at the club for next season and beyond.

WAFL COACH UPDATE

Our Senior Head Coach search is close to conclusion.

Our Panel have conducted all interviews and are finalising candidates. We anticipate announcing our new Head Coach by the end of this week.

He talked a few weeks ago on Before the Footy about having unfinished business at South...I guess being battered by 14 goals in the last game you coached counts. Especially seeing as it was a Grand Final.

It's the first time he'll have coached at this level without the heavy influence of AFL listed talent too. Hopefully those years coaching the 18s program will stand him in good stead given the promotion of youth the club has gone with the last couple of seasons. As a bloke with a very different personality to TC it'll be interesting to see how he adapts and what staffing changes he makes, in the event he has the job of course.

More player news Solomon James and Jack Blechynden have signed on for 2025.

Tomorrow should be the announcement of the new league coach, whoever gets the job obviously has my support but also needs to be aware that Finals are the bare minimum expected in 2025.

It's interesting that if it is Suma that gets the job the club haven't announced the appointment. Felt like something they could have announced early Saturday morning and then got Charlie Burke, Cam Britt or Pete Christie on Before the Footy on SportFM (Suma's radio show) to talk it up, its not like he's coaching elsewhere and involved in finals.

The release from the club on Tuesday says they were looking to announce the coach by the end of this week. This isn't a complaint, I truly hope they are doing full due diligence to make absolutely sure it's the correct appointment, our team deserves no less, just seems odd given the way things have been communicated.
