Some big matches this weekend.
Hobart and Claremont at the TCA is fourth versus top but Hobart have a huge number of players out including league leading goalkicker, Sam Reeves, playing assistant coach Charlton, Mark Cripps etc.
If Hobart gets within five goals it'll be a surprise I think.
Dodges host New Norfolk at Dodges, home side fell away in the last quarter last week at Kermandie but are a hard side to beat down there.
New Norfolk have been very competitive all season despite sitting in the lower reaches of the ladder and only went down by three points to Hobart last week. Could go either way, maybe Dodges Ferry just at home.
Huonville Lions should win pretty easily over Sorell at Huonville and in the night game at Pontville, Lindisfarne should smash bottom-placed Brighton. Cygnet have the week's break.
Picked that like a dirty nose! 100%!
The game at the TCA was a wind-marred game from about quarter time onwards.
In the second and third quarters the two sides kicked a total of 4.18 and about 14 out on the full to the Smith Stand end, wind was blowing all over the place.
Was only ten points in it to three quarter time but new Hobart was done for with no one to kick their goals and Claremont kicking with the howling wind. When the winds eased off a little in the last quarter Claremont was able to kick more accurately and potted 8.2 to run out 60 point winners.
The match was abandoned with four and half minutes to play after a horrible headclash between a Hobart and Claremont player going for the ball in the forward pocket in front of the main stand. The Claremont player (Hobden) was attended to for twenty minutes on the field until he was stretchered to an ambulance and taken to the hospital in a very sombre ending to the match.

I saw a photo of Hobbo on the Claremont Facebook group, looked pretty nasty. Claremont have forfeited the colts this week.

one thing that has not improved or joined the modern era , has been the standard of umpiring
the umpire assoc, have not been pro active in selling the job to the younger generation
the old guys cannot keep up with the pace of the modern game , and therefore make bad calls from a distance

Having only eight clubs in the SFL isn't doing it any wonders through the wider Football Community, surely they could get a few of the older sides back?
Why hasn't the OSFA come under the SFL umbrella yet?
There's currently nine clubs in the SFL.
The playing strength in the competition is a lot weaker than it used to be, no question.
The clubs that are no longer involved in the SFL are Lachlan, a club based in New Norfolk that was extremely unprofessional and had a poor reputation which was not able to attract recruits that folded in 1997.
Channel, which used to be a very strong club that represented the D'entrecasteaux Channel, Margate, Snug, Howden, Middleton type areas in the old Huon Association.
Was very strong as late as 1999 but by the following year began to struggle for players, eventually dropped out of the SFL in the mid 2000s and went into the Old Scholars where they continued to struggle before folding in 2016.
Kermandie were a solid club in the Huon Association but struggled early in their SFL tenure before pulling out an incredible premiership title in 2000.
Struggled again for a few more years before taking out two more flags in 2005 and 2007 but ended up folding in 2010 due to being unable to entice players down there to play.
Their juniors merged with Cygnet and play as Southern Storm and perform very well.
Central Hawks were a three-way combo of ODFA clubs, Oatlands, Bothwell and Kempton that played for a few years in the SFL Regional with no success.
Eventually Bothwell and then Oatlands decided to pull out of the Central Hawks and go it alone in the ODFA.
Bothwell has been a power in that comp, Oatlands have been mediocre mostly, Kempton hasn't fielded a team since around 2003. There's still a Central Hawks junior club however.
Triabunna was introduced into the SFL in the mid 2000's as part of the Regional League but were the subject of some horrific thrashings and were the worst side performance-wise in the history of the SFL.
After AFL Tasmania canned the TSL Reserves in 2010 it left all of Lauderdale's reserves with nowhere to play so Triabunna and Lauderdale entered into a partnership known as the East Coast Bombers. EC Bombers made the finals once but had almost zero support and eventually Lauderdale were providing most of the players.
Triabunna pulled out of the partnership to go it alone rejoining the ODFA in 2016.

As for a combination of the SFL and OSFA?
I think the two leagues have differing philosophies of the sport.
Currently the Old Scholars seem to be stronger than the SFL with respect to quality recruits but is more of a social league with very little travel than the SFL is.
Old Scholars is Reserves and Seniors only, SFL is Colts, Reserves and Seniors although the Colts is really struggling and the Reserves is also a poor competition.
I actually wouldn't be surprised to see the two leagues combine at some stage down the track, especially if any more OSFA clubs go under or if there's a scrapping of the TSL and it returns to a Premier League and Regional League format underpinning a VFL (or the mooted NEAFL) side as it was from 2002-2008.
The SFL is a much poorer and unprofessional competition than it was say, 8-10 years ago but what the future holds, who knows!
We're all mushrooms lol!

Rep game last Saturday at North Hobart.
The SFL has a list of 40 players invited to represent the league against the NTFA, hot on the heels of last year's dismal one-goal effort at Ulverstone against the NWFL.
FOUR bother to turn up to training!
Coach and Assistant Coach ultimately quit sometime later, league orders clubs this past week to provide three players each in order to prevent the match being cancelled.
In the end the "senior" SFL team ends up being a team of almost all reserves players.

NTFA 25.15 (165) d SFL 1.7 (13)!
Crowd of fewer than 200 people.

Huge blackeye for the SFL, league copping enormous criticism on social media, players accused of being "soft" and "dollar chasers" for pulling out, league management described as "inept" and "hopelessly unprofessional".
The SFL being labelled officially a "Third Tier competition" by a former AFL player now coaching in the Old Scholars.
From what I've seen over the past five seasons it's getting that way.

In my opinion that was the SFL's darkest day in its 22 year history.

My view on the situation is that it is need of a complete overhaul.
The AFL needs to restrict players moving from the Leagues within Tasmania to the Mainland for cash, if the AFL dropped the salary cap here and also restricted how many Tasmanians were playing in certain teams and leagues then this would help the Tasmanian Leagues.

I have heard that some clubs are paying players to come over and play in Victoria fly in fly outs for the weekend, no training, no club functions, just game.

Last weekend the final roster round took place with some interesting results.
Hobart, after defeating Huonville Lions the previous week went into the final day needing to defeat Lindisfarne to hold out Cygnet (sixth) who were playing New Norfolk at Cygnet.
Cygnet, as expected went onto record an 18 point victory over the Eagles to end their season while at the TCA, Hobart came out flying and posted three goals in the first 4 minutes of the game only to fall in a massive hole and end up being belted to the tune of 125 points to miss the five.
If Lindisfarne had kicked straighter the margin could've been well over 160 points in the finish.
At Dodges Ferry the Sharks led Huonville Lions by as much as seven goals during the game only for the out-of-form Lions to hit back and steal the game with seconds left by 3 points to secure third spot.
It was the only time Huonville Lions had been in front the entire day!
Claremont sent Brighton into the Summer winless after inflicted a 157 point belting of the Robins at Abbotsfield Park to secure second spot.

In today's finals matches in the SFL it was Dodges Ferry coming from behind to end Cygnet's season in the Elimination Final at Shark Park by 17 points.
In a seesawing battle the Port led by 18 points going into the final change before Dodges Ferry kicked to the scoring end with a strong home crowd behind them in the final term pulling away with a five goal to nil final term to win 12.13 (85) to 9.14 (68) to move into next week's First Semi Final against Huonville Lions at Huonville.

At Abbotsfield Park, Claremont gradually wore down a persistent Huonville Lions by 27 points.
Claremont held narrow leads at the first two breaks but the Lions struck back to level the scores at three quarter time with the aid of some poor kicking from Claremont.
The final term saw the Magpies race away with the game with a 5.4 to 1.1 finish to win 11.17 (83) to 8.8 (56).
Claremont now face red-hot Lindisfarne at Anzac Park in next week's Second Semi Final.

Reserves Elimination Final:
Dodges Ferry 10.10 (70) d Hobart 7.5 (47)

Reserves Qualifying Final:
Claremont 9.14 (68) d Huonville Lions 4.3 (27)

Colts Elimination Final:
Sorell 11.11 (77) d Hobart 9.12 (66)

Colts Qualifying Final:
Lindisfarne 6.10 (46) d Southern Storm 3.6 (24)

Well this weekend sees the 2018 SFL Grand Final at North Hobart.
In the Seniors, Lindisfarne play Huonville Lions in a repeat of their matchup ten years ago when the Two Blues won every game that season and somewhat over-confidently printed off their premiership t-shirts during the week only to get rolled by 37 points on the day.
The two sides have met twice this season and are 1-1 with the Lions winning away at Anzac Park earlier in the season before Lindisfarne smacked the Lions by 64 points in a slop heap at Huonville very late in the season.
Huonville made the grand final courtesy of a 22 point win over Claremont in the Preliminary Final, reversing their Qualifying Final result from two weeks earlier.
Lindisfarne have won eleven consecutive matches leading into the Grand Final including a 72 point thumping of Claremont in the Second Semi Final.
For the Two Blues, they are desperate to break the jinx of harrowing Grand Finals (and finals) losses over the past decade.
Losses to Huonville in 2008 (37 points), New Norfolk in 2009 (32 points), New Norfolk in 2012 (5 points - after being 51 points up), Claremont in 2016 (8 points) and New Norfolk (5 points - lost on the last kick of the match) are well publicised.
Also three years ago the Two Blues dropped a First Semi Final at home to Huonville Lions by a point in extra time after leading by 52 points in the final quarter.
Huonville have been steeling themselves for the chance of a lifetime to steal an unlikely premiership but I don't think it will happen.
Lindisfarne to finally break the grand final hoodoo and do it in comfortable fashion.
My prediction is a 56 point win to Lindisfarne, best side in the SFL by a long way.

In the Reserves Lindisfarne and Claremont meet after the Magpies registered a 19 point win over Dodges Ferry in the Preliminary Final.
Lindisfarne have been powerful all season and should win comfortably and go back-to-back there.

In the Colts Lindisfarne is up against last season's runner, Southern Storm (Cygnet-Kermandie).
The Storm were magnificent in their dismantling of minor premier New Norfolk by 83 points last Saturday, keeping the Eagles to just 0.3 (3).
This should be a hard fought battle between the two sides and I get a feeling the Storm maybe a little more battle hardened and run over the Two Blues this time.

In the SFLW comp Lindisfarne are also through, they come up against North Hobart who battled their way through defeating the highly fancied South East Suns to make the final.
Lindisfarne have been a great side in the womens competition all season and should go on to record their second SFLW premiership in succession.

Well it's all over for another year in the SFL and today was a "Blue Wash" with Lindisfarne taking out all four flags on offer.
In sunny conditions the SFLW match started the day and it was the Two Blues being much too go for North Hobart running out 53 point winners.
In the two seasons of SFLW Lindisfarne has won both premierships.
The Reserves saw Lindisfarne run out convincing 62 point winners over Claremont, drawing away in the second half to win back-to-back flags in the reserves.
The Senior grand final saw Lindisfarne and Huonville Lions forge a tough contest early, only Lindisfarne's cleaner disposal giving them a three goal break at quarter time.
The Lions hit back in the second quarter and got it back to under 10 points with plenty of heart and endeavour but the Two Blues were able to sneak a couple of late goals to into the long break 20 points ahead. After half time the floodgates well and truly opened as the Two Blues blew Huonville Lions away in the first ten minutes to put the game beyond doubt and in the final term it was party time for Lindisfarne as they piled on another seven goals as they ran out 84 point winners to take out their first premiership since their 1989 TAFL Southern Division premiership over Claremont at Abbotsfield Park.
Michael Cassidy with seven goals was adjudged best on ground.
In the final match of the day it was Lindisfarne and Southern Storm that fought out a tough contest in the first half, in the third quarter the Two Blues blew the game open to open up a substantial lead at the final change.
The Storm fought back in the final term but poor kicking and errant disposal stopped any chance they had of mounting the big comeback, Lindisfarne were able to kick away late in the game to register a 34 point victory and consign the Storm to back to back grand final defeats.
Good crowd turned out for the day, not sure how many, maybe 3,500 to 4,000.
Edit: Official crowd was 4,054 which was not far shy of the TSL Grand Final attendance of just 4,400.

SFLW Grand Final:
Lindisfarne 9.13 (67) d North Hobart 2.2 (14)

SFL Reserves Grand Final:
Lindisfarne 13.16 (94) d Claremont 5.2 (32)

SFL Seniors Grand Final:
Lindisfarne 19.15 (129) d Huonville 6.9 (45)

SFL Colts Grand Final:
Lindisfarne 12.9 (81) d Southern Storm 6.10 (46)

Just taken a bit of an interest in the SFL (and other local footy leagues in Vic and Tas) of late and wanted to say great work on this thread guys. Sad to read about the struggles for some of the clubs, especially Brighton, and footy in Tasmania in general.
Thanks for stopping by and glad you enjoyed it.
There's not much posting about the SFL or the Old Scholars these days at all, 10-15 years ago these boards were full of posters.
I think it shows the general apathy and lack of interest in the game we have at the moment.
Just looking at some of the Grand Final crowds in recent weeks it's a real disappointment.
TSL (4,400), SFL (4,054), NWFL (3,500 approx), NTFA Division One (2,500), NTFA Division Two (2,092), Old Scholars FA (1,700), ODFA (1,500), Darwin (800 approx).

2018/19 Pre-Season News:

Brighton have enticed former Essendon, Burnie, Cygnet and New Norfolk premiership ruckman Jason Laycock out of retirement for next season to play under his old coach at Boyer, Matthew Smith.
Rumoured to have a few more coming to the Robins to help pull them out of the doldrums, Jye County ex-New Norfolk and Claremont player has returned from interstate and signed for two seasons (County holds the record for most goals kicked in an SFL match in any grade with 20 for New Norfolk Under-18s one day).
Matthew Smith will coach for his second year into his tenure with new assistant coach Todd Lewis, ex-Central Hawks, Hobart and Claremont senior coach taking on that role.
Matt Coppleman taking on the reserves job and Damian Butler announced as colts coach for next season.
Hobart have lost ruckman Tom Robertson back to Victoria, best and fairest winner Jayden Charlton back to North Hobart, Callan Newman to the North West, Luke Sullivan also retiring and also possibly Mark Cripps to the north because of Uni.
Mark Beck reappointed as senior coach with Colts coach Nathan Hartnett as his assistant replacing Heath Neville.
Sam Hughes replaces Scott Quinn as reserves coach with Quinn electing to join the board of directors from next season.
Longtime President Russell Young, serving out his second term (he presided over the club from 1991-1993) is stepping down and is expected to be replaced by Callum Upchurch.
Claremont have announced that Luke Potter will take over the reigns as senior coach replacing veteran coach Kim Excell, Matt Bird taking on the reserves position replacing club veteran Brett Carr and Will Byers will coach the colts.
Michael "Jock" McGregor has re-signed to coach Sorell again in 2019 to serve his third year at Pembroke Park.
Brent Dolliver has re-signed to coach again at Dodges Ferry next season.
The Sharks have lured former Lauderdale TSL Development League leading goalkicker for the past two seasons, Cambell Hooker to Shark Park.
Hooker was runner-up in the TSL Development League best and fairest last year.
Huonville Lions have appointed former North Hobart and Kingborough senior captain Tim Peterson as senior coach in 2019 replacing Nick Doyle who has stepped down.

Looks like not much'll change for next season!!
The Farne will more than likely win it again, can't see anybody else challenging them to knock them off.
Brighton might win a few more games with the Big **** lining up. Interesting to see how big a paddock he's been in though.
Hobart look stuffed, lost probably five of their top six players - any truth to the rumour that half the players didn't bother turning up tro training in the second half of the year? Piss poor if true.
When was the last time that club won a finals match? Mediocre for years Hobart.
Sorell really improved from what I saw last year and were probably the best side to only win 2 games for a year that I seen.
PS - caught a glimpse at an article in the local toilet paper today where Ms Ogilivie is now head of the Tassie Footy Council after Kyron Johnson chucked it in!
Talk about dumb and dumber. Jesus.

Hobart last won a finals match in 2006, Premier League Elimination Final against Kingborough at the TCA Ground.
That was the only finals match they've won in the last 15 years since they knocked off Clarence in the Preliminary Final back in 2003.
It's that constant lack of success that makes it difficult to get people involved in the club and retain players.
Hobart's attendances are about average for SFL football (ie: small), but all the volunteers are ageing, it's mostly the same old faces that have been there for decades.
Yes saw that article, supposedly she posted on the SFL Facebook page a video of her talking about being promoted to this role and it met a torrent of scorn from posters criticising her performance as head of the SFL and what a disaster she's been for the league. She apparently yanked the post shortly after.
She has zero knowledge of football and I get the feeling she is very delusional in how she sees her performance as an administrator because, quite frankly, both her and Johnson have been dismal failures and the SFL has gone downhill quite alarmingly under their watch.
It may have to be taken back over and run by delegates of each club in future in order to try and get this competition back on track.
Too many one sided seasons, stacked teams causing lopsided results, no publicity, no mainstream media profile, no visible figurehead, nobody championing the league's causes, Colts football struggling, attendances sliding for a number of years, Grand Final attendances noticeably down in recent years.
No major competition naming rights sponsor for the second year running.

Time for these failures to be booted out - too many selfies and not enough hard work done.
