They're not, but they are custodians of the game who are employed to govern the game in a fair and even manner in line with the spirit of the game, they do not have opposition as players do, they do not have limitations that players do, they have the rules and they have the application of the rules inside of a game.

Put bluntly, the very second that Whispers in the Sky happened, those umpires should have been stood down, immediately, from all forms of governance. They were not. This dents confidence in the umpiring fraternity because then they are viewed as taking sides, they are not an impartial party acting in the interest of the spirit of the game, they are a party acting in the interest of a narrative, of personal feel.

They don't have to be infallible, they don't have to be omnipotent, they have to be fair.

As in, Hickey's intention was not to impede Goldstein from the ruck contest, Goldsteins intention was to jump on/over Hickey, this was not impeded, Goldy still jumped, Hickey protected the ball drop to win the tap, Goldy did not leap or did not reach enough to win the tap. A block would be Hickey removing Goldy from the contest.

Goldy still made the contest no?

Fantastic post!

It just shows all "the free kick was there" brigade that, no, looking at the law, it actually wasn't. What so many of us are so annoyed about is that the free kick wasn't there AND was also paid with such a short time left when it was going to directly influence the result of the match. Stevic stuffed up big time with this and should be given a week or 2 off at the very least and the club should go hard at this at the AFL level. It is unacceptable that we lost the points in this fashion after the hawks debacle when we actually got an apology (it wasn't a conspiracy umpire apologists ).

Amazing that the umpire apologists think we are to blame for the stuff-up by not playing better in the first half. That's taking self-loathing to a whole new level, you almost question their allegiance to our great club .

So you think kicking 3.7 in the first half is something to aspire to?

Allowing a run of 12 clearances in a row, perhaps?

Seven players had 4 clangers or more. Another four had 3 each. Who's an apologist?

The most galling two decisions of the day were the shocking call by Boomer in the 2nd that the stormtrooper umpire agreed with (these are not the droids you're looking for) and the appalling call on Gresh when Ziebel cannoned into his legs.
I can't stand the ruck calls on 2 man contests. Unless you charge the other guy, tunnel him or get him high, it should be left to the contest.
What's lost on the Goldstien Hickey one is that Hickey got the tap.
Play on every day of the week.

Love him, but he really needs to improve his tackling technique also. I saw him miss 3 tackles today which were all on the inexcusable side of the ledger. Will probably see him dropped is my guess.
Disagree, you need to watch more of him he really his tackling is seriously good. Today he missed tackles on Cunnington and Zieball who were mostly running at him who are always difficult to tackle let alone when side stepping, I'd say watch all his other games and his tackling is very good.

I just did Henny Penny... I just did, and I see a rational, intelligent and some might say handsome adult.

As opposed to you who has has more meltdowns than a Choc Wedge on a hot footpath in the middle of summer.

Carry on. :):thumbsu:

True, you are the triple threat but your moniker reminds me of a venereal disease.

Very good effort.. A little more polish we would've got home but the way we are trying to play and a young side you've got to take the good with the bad.. So much to be happy about

Newnes is one of my fav players but gee he had a stinker.. Nearly every time he got it he made a bad choice.

Riewoldt is amazing and I'm surprised dunstan only had 19 it seemed like he influenced it a lot more than that

Also Brucey has generally been quiet for large periods in games this year but it's s great sign his still able to pop up and kick his 2 a game often in big moments.. He is clutch

I have noticed he's getting much further up the ground this year. His heavy scoring was mostly as a stay at home forward and playing second fiddle with the best defenders elsewhere. Once he started getting attention of the better defenders he dropped away towards the end of 2015. I assume we are making space for a Paddy style forward and developing Bruce into a mobile bigman, having Rooey on a wing means two defenders who would have been tied up with him can sit on Josh though ATM.

Just watched the last two minutes again.

No obvious missed frees, and Hickey arrived late because of being sore. Ball was up, Hickey looked at Goldstein and held him out with his arms.

Free kick.

Confirmation bias is a hell of a drug.
So did I.

If Goldstein warranted a free for that infringement then Savage should have got one in the contest that led to the ball up for the head high tackle and being ridden into the ground - but rightly the umpires had "put the whistle away" because it was a tense tight contest.

Don't buy into the conspiracy theory and I understand that umpires make mistakes (and that our poor play cost us the game) but the rule of thumb for all umpires, all standards, all competitions all sports is don't influence the outcome by making 50/50 calls.

Play on!!!!!

If you technically umpired every contest there are about 3000 missed a game. They don't seem to have a feel for the game or any idea about the impact the decisions they make might have on the outcome. When there was one field umpire they might have missed people getting punched behind play but they seemed to have more fuel for the game and the spirit it was played in.

So why did they not pay the potential 5 frees in the lead up to the onecthey did?

Do they just pick and choose when they will pay one?

Thats like asking "Why dont all our players kick at 100%?"

We dont know what their vision is like. The view from the stands/TV is much different to that of a person at ground level and that close to the action.

The ump could be looking for holding off the ball when a player is taken high in a marking contest. Or he may have his view blocked by the runner. Or he could be thinking about what he is gonna have for dinner that night.

Im not saying the umpires are infallable. Just that this "controversial" free kick has been blown way out of proportion due to the circumstances underwhich it was paid.

Pay that same free in the first qtr and we wouldnteven be talking about it.

Absolute crap football from North. It's like all of a sudden Scott thinks we're back in 2005 with mass flooding. While it obviously worked they won't go anywhere with that Ross Lyon stuff. Take it as a compliment though that he was extremely concerned about our attacking game.

We are a long way off in contested ball and clearances. I'm not sure how a team can win 12 straight clearances against us, just simply should not happen. As happy as I am with the list and the types of players we're bringing in we aren't winning anything until we improve dramatically in that area.

Great to see Membrey back up his 5 goal performance from last week. Was a bit worried he'd have a quiet game but I think he's on his way to becoming a good player for us.

Sinclair such a big loss. If he's right to go next week Minch would be the out for mine. Just don't think he's up to it TBH.

Liked some of the things Gresh did. Definitely looks more comfortable and used it pretty well.

What's happened with Bruce's hands? Dropping sitters this season. Still in decent form considering.

Starting to think Webster won't ever be that 20+ possession gun half back. Could still be a valuable player as a defender who might one day take the #1 small forward but he just can't consistently find the ball.

Anyway when you factor in who's still to come into the side we're tracking extremely well.

I don't know what that means but he's playing unbelievable footy. Averaging more disposals and marks this season than any season of his career. Ranked number 1 in the comp for marks so far this year. Not by a little bit either. At this rate he goes past Gary Dempsey for most marks OF ALL TIME next season. Barring injury he'll also have played the second most games of any St Kilda player ever. The guy is just a machine.
Jesus,

Let's remember he missed just about two full seasons with his collarbone and hamstring, plus multiple others with his knee. He just keeps coming back as good as ever.

True, you are the triple threat but your moniker reminds me of a venereal disease.

Oooh, I'm so cut. You got me there champ.

Might go make myself a cuppa and munch on a few melting moments...

haha, maybe you should change your moniker to Chernobyl... in honor of the biggest meltdown in history?

The reason I didn't want Jack L in this week was exactly for what happened to him today. He doesn't have the body mass and strength to go up against grown men yet. This was always going to be a hiding to nothing and really the selection panel should have been able to assess this better - their bad.

He will be a "ripper" literally but he isn't ready yet. For those wanting Minch out, he wasn't brilliant again today but he does give us strong contest.

We currently have Minch, Lonie, Eli and Gresh fighting for 2 spots in the 22. All absolutely kill it at VFL level but only occasionally come up with it at AFL. If they go back to the 2's they should be being made to absolutely ream it for at least 3 weeks before being given a reprieve. Lonie should go out next week but it's not his fault its just too big a task for him atm and Wet Toast well pulverise him.

This bizarre notion that having a President that lambasts and complains is somehow better than one that efficiently achieves goals is born out of odd macho entitlement. It's Bush vs. Obama. Great, you feel better that someone carried on like a child about something that cannot change in perpetuity and most likely does the opposite of your hopes and makes us an enemy of umpires. What a load that achieves.

The histrionics by so many on this board just really make me, and I'm sure others, consider never returning. It's a playground here after games and the fact that so many of you are grown adults with families and responsibilities is alarming.

That being said, the alternative story that we were simply awful for three quarters isn't really objectively looking at reality. North's defensive pressure and set up is the perfect counterweight to our offensive set up. They pushed our forward fifty entries so high that they could defend them or force the shots on goal to be from 50. That isn't just bad football by us.

Not to mention, that if we were so awful, and we still almost beat the undefeated ladder leaders then what does that say about us? If our not very good is competitive with the best, I'm not sure we have a whole lot to worry about.

Take a deep breath, footy shouldn't be this taxing. We're building, and very clearly the best team outside of the 8 so far, even if our results don't reflect that. More games into our youth, more recruitment, the addition of players like Carlisle and Freeman, etc. and we're really on our way. If we beat Hawthorn and the Roos, which we really could have, then we play finals this year. We had the wooden spoon two years ago. That's a pretty remarkable turnaround.

Richo, our recruiters, and our players deserve a lot of credit. We'll get there. Don't have a heart attack before it happens.

I don't think there's any rule saying you can't look at your opponent in a rucking contest to see where he is. It's different to the marking contest where you must have eyes for the ball. Hickey stood under the ball toss and put out his arm out to protect himself against Goldy jumping - my question - is there any rule that says you can't make contact with your arm in a ruck contest?

It simply has nothing to do with the fact that we were level with a minute to go in the last quarter! How we got there/if we were bad or good before that is irrelevant, we were good enough to be there before a call was made that was a shocker that gifted the decisive point to the opposition.

All this gas-lighting of our supporters is strange and treats us as fools who don't know what confirmation bias is. Until umpiring becomes fully professional we will continue to have wildly inconsistent performances from the men in green including ones that directly influence the game like ours today and last night with the Crows. We need to demand more from our officials. They need help. The AFL should look to pouring money into their officiating to make it fully professional so the type of performance we saw today and last night is the exception rather than the rule.
