State of Origin Game 2

That was the worst SOO game I have ever seen. The Ref allowed the tacklers to lie all over the ball carriers, so the defence was always set.

I couldn't blame anyone who isn't a huge League fan being too enthused.

Lets hope Hayne never gets another gig at this level.

glad to see the Maroons get the victory, but I must say I think origin is losing some of the 'buzz' that it used to have. It used to be all you saw or heard about in the week leading up to the game, not the case anymore. It just seems to me that the general interest just isn't the same as say 10 or 15 years ago. Died in the wool league fans are still rabid about it, but the interest from you average joe public seems to have waned.

As for talks of a QLD dynasty, I remember hearing that said about NSW some 5-6 years ago but it never eventuated....a lot of things can change in a year.

Anasta just has never lived up to the hype surrounding him
,has he ever done anything to influence a game

ok a broken hand but what was he up to before that

Probably not painting the full picture. It is still a major event for Queenslanders and it is a huge buildup for games up here. There has always been a perception from Qlders that Sydney is pretty blase about these games and the buildup not as intense. That seemed to change a few years ago when Joey was carving up and NSW were dominating. I ask anybody in Sydney about Origin when they are losing, and it is pretty much a 'who cares' type response. When Qld are losing, Qlders still carry on about how much they hate those cockroaches. I just think it means more to Qld than it does to NSW, so that buzz is up and down a lot.

Last nights game was a flat buildup because it was played down there. Game one, I was excited and game 3 is for a little more bragging rights but not much more because the series is over.

Poor game of footy, not the least because of the ref. Why is it that no penalties in these big games is considered to be an achievement? Sure, don't blow the pea out of the whistle but a couple of early ruck and off-side penalties would have made a massive difference to the game. Refs seem to think that the players' discipline will be enough but when you put 26 elite footballers onto the field, they are going to work out pretty quickly that you aren't willing to penalise. It ruins the game as a spectacle and allows the less dominant side to keep in the contest.

Who was the less dominant side? I would say Queensland. Our kicking game (Smith aside) was generally poor (although the defensive line "breaking" and split markers allowed pressure to come onto Thurston and Lockyer - not to say that Queensland didn't take advantage of Hayne as well). Kimmorley's general kicking game was excellent and did not allow Hunt to provide the momentum building runs of the first game. I thought our forwards were patchy but that our game plan revolved around outside backs doing a lot of grunt work which meant that we made enough metres in most sets, but without actually tiring or stretching the NSW defence.

But just because Queensland did not dominate the game, doesn't mean that NSW deserved to win. They were sub-standard. To have that much ball and score no points in 70 minutes is disgraceful. Sure the Queenslanders defended very well but even the best defence will crack if you throw enough options at them. NSW did not have those options. Kimmorley tried hard but his style of footy was not suited to the NSW game plan or the conditions. Anasta is not a playmaker's ########. Buderus was not creative enough - Gould/Johns rubbished Murray for this but if they ever take the time to watch Aaron Payne play, they'd see that Murray has no problem with the dummy-half as playmaker. And despite the fact that Stewart was exceptional, he offered very little in terms of danger to Queensland's defence both in kick returns and in general play.

NSW has some soul searching to do - I actually don't think they could have picked anyone else that would have done better than this mob. Anasta got the number 6 by default so there's not much else out there in that regard - although Bird was very good and looks the part. There's no other outside backs knocking on the door. And the half-back slot is still to be resolved.

In the forwards, I still think that they made a mistake by not playing Bailey from the start - NSW were running on the forward reserves while Queensland's starting props were just warming up. NSW's problem is that Mason is their best prop but he's also the best impact forward in the world - playing him at prop limited his effectiveness as an impact player which is when he causes Qld the most trouble. it also tires him out - Mason's 17 minutes of output did not equal Price's 30+ minutes. White will be better for this series - I reckon he'll be the world's best prop in the next 2 years. Kite is overrated - I'd have O'Meley, Ryles, Bailey starting before him. And I thought Simpson was terrible - was always a better player running off Johns (who isn't?!).

As far as Qld goes, I was glad to hear that they are concentrating on the white wash - they can't rest on their laurels. The future isn't as secure as 2 straight series victories might suggest. Our 2 best props can't go on much longer and the likes of Myles and Webb don't look ready to be forward leaders like Petero and Pricey. Lillyman looks ready to play a starting role but we still lack a bit in the back row, Dallas aside. While we talk Cronk and Prince up as great half backs, we don't know how they will combine with Thurston when Lockyer moves on. We have little depth in the outside backs (other than fullback) and Bell is solid at best. Trying to work out who will replace Tate if he's not fit for Origin 3 is enlightening. Folau is the next obvious winger but that is a lot of pressure on a young bloke. Slater (if fit) or Bowen might get a run, either on the wing or on the bench, allowing Berrigan to play centre and Bell to shift to the wing. But that is going to mean players playing out of position. The depth at centre/wing is lacking.

Agree with what you are saying in terms of a bigger 'buzz' in QLD but I still think it has died down in queensland a fair bit. I remember as a 10 year old kid walking to school (just over a decade ago), every second house draped in Maroon as well as local businesses, I don't really see that anymore. Still a big event in QLD, but perhaps because my own interest has died down that has affected my perception of the general interest. To me the atmosphere in Queensland isn't as rabid as it used to be, but I know there are still plenty of QLDers who are as passionate as ever about origin.

Word is that Thurston may have played the 2nd half with a broken hand. Shows the major difference in player here. Thurston is a driven individual, and in a maroon jersey he is pretty much maniacal about winning.

Sums up the difference in passion between the states.

Amazing effort by Thurston.

Only downside is he'll have to miss Cowboys matches this week and possibly more.

Probably the worse time to miss a week is the week we play the Storm:(

Can I just offer congratulations to Ray Rabbits Warren for his call of the game. Absolutely sensational - in particular, I loved how he ignored the play for 10 minutes to descrive every item the diabetic blue put in his kit bag. Top stuff!

Then ran through all 50 of the family members young Brett Stewart had at the game?

"...His young second cousin, Abdullah, who I understand has a Syrian Father, is somewhere in Bay 26..."
