Some unforgettable names there. My favourite is Urban Duniam, who played one game for South Melbourne in 1950. He could stay on the list for centuries while we await another Urban or another Duniam to appear. Moose Pretto is also on the list. He played a solitary game with Fitzroy in 1978, kicking one goal. He then went on to boot 1095 goals in the VFA with Camberwell, Coburg, Oakleigh and Dandenong. Chic Breese is one of those fashionable names that you might associate with current times, however he actually played at Carlton in 1897-98. Other great names from the distant past are Housie Grounds, Bonnie Izzard and Hollington London.

That's a tremendous effort! Just on Hamilton Stokesbury, he's no longer considered by the AFL to have played, with this chap now credited with playing that one game for Richmond in 1915: William Henry "Harry" Stokesberry.

I'm pretty sure that 'Moose' Pretto was his nickname, and he is better known as Reno. (He still may be the only Reno).

Also - 'Gregory Whittlesea'? There must have been other Gregorys.

Yes, he's on the list as 'Rino'. I reckon I must have seen him kick about 800 of those goals. After kicking an important goal he would celebrate with his patented Moose call, along with a Moose dance. I never realised how irritating those things were to opposition supporters until he transferred from Oakleigh to Dandenong in 1992.

I know that some of those other Gregs were most likely Gregorys, but this exercise was just a bit of fun, so I went with exactly what was shown in the database.

Some unforgettable names there. My favourite is Urban Duniam, who played one game for South Melbourne in 1950. He could stay on the list for centuries while we await another Urban or another Duniam to appear. Moose Pretto is also on the list. He played a solitary game with Fitzroy in 1978, kicking one goal. He then went on to boot 1095 goals in the VFA with Camberwell, Coburg, Oakleigh and Dandenong. Chic Breese is one of those fashionable names that you might associate with current times, however he actually played at Carlton in 1897-98. Other great names from the distant past are Housie Grounds, Bonnie Izzard and Hollington London.

There's been 3 players named Carruthers who have played senior football over the years, so I think that rules the first chap out. The other two would need to crack it for a senior game before they made the list as well.
 
There's been other players called Ivor (Ivor Warne-Smith for Melbourne) and other players with the surname McIvor (Scott McIvor, only one of two players to represent Fitzroy, the Brisbane Bears and the Brisbane Lions) but in the 1940s Essendon actually had a player named Ivor McIvor. He has since passed on, but I wonder if he was friends with Robert Roberts from Fitzroy and Donald McDonald from North Melbourne?

After four rounds of the 2010 season, the Brisbane Lions were undefeated at 4-0, second on the ladder with a good percentage of 130.80. Brisbane looked to be carrying on their improvement from 2009 and that some controversial trading in the off-season had paid off for the club.

At the other end of the scale, the Lions' feline cousins the Richmond Tigers were having an awful season, winless 0-4 with a dismal percentage of 50.80, and hot favorites for the 2010 wooden spoon.

Fast forward 4 months to Round 19, and the Brisbane Lions travel to Perth to play the bottom placed West Coast Eagles, both the Lions and Eagles now behind the Tigers on the ladder and the loser of the Brisbane/West Coast match likely to take home the wooden spoon. Brisbane's on the siren win helped them avoid a last placed finish in a remarkable season in which as late as Round 9 the Lions were 4 games ahead of the Tigers and the Eagles (who ended up at the bottom of the ladder) were 3 games clear of Richmond.
 
Mark Roberts holds a pretty unique achievement in football - he played in both the Brisbane Bears' first game and their last game.

In Round 1 1987 Roberts was a member of the first Bears' team which caused a massive upset by beating North Melbourne at the MCG. Nearly a decade later as the Brisbane Bears ended their 10 year AFL tenure prior to the merger with Fitzroy to become the Brisbane Lions, Roberts was in the North Melbourne team that defeated and eliminated Brisbane in a 1996 preliminary final at the MCG.

Of all the players to have ever played in the AFL/VFL, Richmond's Ronald McDonald who played 92 games for the Tigers must have been very relieved that he was born in 1933 and played in 1955-1960 rather than having born in 1963 and playing in 1985-1990. Imagine what would have happened at every game! Ronald McDonald died in his 67th year on 11th September 2000, exactly a year before 911.

The "curse" of the 20 win season:

In 1995, Carlton became the first team to win 20 home and away games in a season, finishing with a 20-2 record. It went on to beat Geelong in the Grand Final and become the first club to win 16 Premierships. Since then, Carlton has never again finished on top of the ladder and hasn't added to its premiership tally. Carlton has appeared in only one Grand Final since 1995 (a loss in 1999) and "won" 5 wooden spoons since.

In 2000, Essendon went one better, becoming the first team to have a 21-1 record. It went on the beat Melbourne in the Grand Final to equal Carlton's record of 16 Premierships. Essendon finished on top of the ladder the next season in 2001 but lost the Grand Final to Brisbane. Since then, Essendon has not finished on top of the ladder or made a Grand Final. It did "win" a wooden spoon in 2016 - its first since 1933.

In 2008, Geelong equalled the record with a 21-1 season. It then lost the Grand Final to Hawthorn. Geelong has since won premierships in 2009 and 2011 (see info below) but did not finish on top again until 2020 (with a loss in the Grand Final to Richmond).

In 2009, St.Kilda finished with a 20-2 record before losing the Grand Final to Geelong. St.Kilda made the Grand Final the next season in 2010, drawing with Collingwood before losing the replay. Since 2009, St.Kilda has not finished on top or won a premiership. It did "win" a wooden spoon in 2014.

In 2011, Collingwood finished with a 20-2 record before losing the Grand Final to Geelong (the only team to beat Collingwood all season). Since then, Collingwood has not finished on top or won a premiership. it has appeared in only one Grand Final since (a loss in 2018).
 
St Kilda won the 1955 wooden spoon, and this was the Saints' 7th last placed finish in 13 years, St Kilda also running last in 1943, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1952 and 1954. The 1955 team had one of the poorest seasons on record, going 1-17 with a percentage of 45.

Despite being last by a long way in 1955, the Saints showed gradual improvement from then on and 11 years later, St Kilda were crowned VFL premiers for the first time in 1966. Unfortunately for the Saints, they went slowly backwards and exactly 11 years after their first premiership they collected their first wooden spoon in 22 years, running last in 1977.

So how did the Saints go in 1988? Did they go full circle again in 11 years, and win the 1988 flag? Not by a long shot, the Saints ran last again. And remarkably like in the mid 1940s to mid 1950s, this was the Saints' 7th wooden spoon in 12 years, St Kilda finishing on the bottom of the ladder in 1977, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1988.
 
When Jack Gunston kicks 2 more goals, he'll place 99th for VFL/AFL goalkickers and, normally, that would have him the 99th player in VFL/AFL history to reach 400 goals.

He'll actually be the 100th VFL/AFL player.

Prior to 2020, It was always assumed and recorded that Cliff Rankin finished his career on exactly 400 goals but, through research, he was actually credited with one more goal than he should've been and, thus, went from 400 career goals to 399 career goals.

After Gunston, the next closest, of current players, to 400 goals is Tom Lynch from Richmond (formerly Gold Coast) who's currently on 349 goals.
 
The Brisbane Bears only had a tenure of a decade (1987-1996) but hold an unusual record that given the way the game is played nowadays is unlikely to be surpassed any time soon. The unusual Bears record is for the biggest win by a team to be preceded and followed by a loss. This took place in 1993, when after losing to Hawthorn at Waverley Park in Round 7 by 43-points (this loss was closer than the final scores suggest, with the Bears leading for most of the first half and at various times in the third quarter) they slaughtered Sydney at the GABBA in Round 8, kicking the first 20 goals of the match and thrashing the Swans in the end by 162-points, 33.21-219 to 8.9-57. Following a Round 9 bye, the Bears played the Crows at the GABBA in Round 10, and led for much of a high scoring, high standard and very entertaining match. But the young Bears side ran out of steam in the last 15 minutes, and Adelaide ran all over Brisbane for a 39-point win.

So which team holds the inverse record for this, the biggest loss between two wins? This situation was less common than a big win between two losses, and the record is held by North Melbourne, which in 1983 lost a game by 150-points to Fitzroy, this thrashing preceded and followed by 31 and 32 point wins over St Kilda and the Sydney Swans respectively. The year 1983 was a strange one for North. The Kangaroos had earlier that season beaten the Swans by 140-points in Sydney, giving North the odd record for a team to have won and lost by the biggest differential of margins in the same season. And the Kangaroos, which also boasted a Brownlow Medal to Ross Glendinning (the last time to date a North player won this award) were minor premiers, but capitulated meekly in the finals, thumped by 40-points by Hawthorn in the second semi final and 86-points by Essendon.

The Saints were thrashed by the Sydney Swans by 110-points, and this belting was followed up by further thrashings from Carlton by 140-points (Saints kicked 2.17-29) and 113-points by Richmond in a high-scoring game (31.25-211 to 14.14-98).

I don't know if there's another player to have started their career with three successive century hidings before or since.

Oldie but a goodie which I've mentioned several times, but the 3rd 100 pt loss ended up being quite a percentage booster for the Saints. I'd hazard a guess that no century defeat would ever have risen a side's percentage like that either.

Actually checking *Paul's stats site, Frank Carbone also was an unfortunate debutant Saint in those three games too, sharing McAdam's fate. Robert Keeble might have been happy to be dropped after Rd 2!

St.Kilda though did have the satisfaction of knocking over the Bulldogs in Rd 22 though, no mean feat as they were 16-5 at that stage and holding the double chance.
