That is a record that would make 'Records never to be broken' ...the remarkable St.Kilda effort in 1985, after kicking off with a 29-169 smashing at Carlton's hands in Rd 1 and a further 100+ towelling in Rd 2....their relatively high scoring 98-211 loss to Richmond in Rd 3 was an excellent percentage booster for them!

By the way Ron....surely Carlton in Rd 1 1984 and Rd 1 1985 would have the record for the biggest consecutive pairs of opening round wins? Given they smashed the Kangas by 137 points in Rd 1 1984, with Ralph scoring 9 goals on debut.

The 1985 St.Kilda game was actually in Round 2.

Thanks Ron....Got my St.Kilda smashings mixed up for 1985..

On your original point about GWS...a percentage of under 44% at this stage of the season, i am guessing we'd be having to go back to the pre 1925 era to find a worse effort. Particularly with the leading sides no longer 'rolling the arm over' in playing them, they could get some fearful whippings between now and season's end.

Yep, after 15+ games you're only looking at St.Kilda in the sectional rounds in the early years of the VFL (not sure if those games counted towards the season's percentage, or officially comprised a separate ladder - maybe someone can confirm), and Melbourne in 1919 after four years of war-induced remission as worse performers.

The most games "a name" has appeared against one team is Jack Collins vs Collingwood (comprising four different people), 49 for 15-33-1. Kevin Bartlett played Carlton 46 times all by his self

The best record for a multiple name holder with 25 games is the Ron Barassis 24-1-0 v NM, the Ablett hierarchy v Rich. next with 28-3-0.

(Doesn't account for Charles=Charlie etc, that would be a pain in the arse to do)

That's amazing..shows how prolific the Carlton/Richmond finals rivalry was in Bartlett's time...46 games out of his 403 games. 11.41% of his career against one club in a 12-team comp. Theoretically given an even distribution he'd have played more like 36.36 games or obviously 1/11th.

Small wonder Richmond and Carlton have played as many games against each other as just about all of the 1897 group have played, with the exceptions of Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon who have played the most finals of the originals.

Sectional matches were not included in the season ladder until 1901. Melbourne making the grand final after finishing 6th in the rounds before the sectional matches changed it.
St Kilda's percentage on the 1899 sectional ladder was 9.6.
Nothing to stop us making complete ladders for each team's total matches in a season.

Stats Observation for Round 16, 2012.

8 Away teams won.

Surely this is the first time this has ever happened?

Sydney/ SM's highest percentage since 1919? I presume that is after a Round 16?

In its last 6 third qtrs, Hawthorn have conceded 1, 1, 1, 5, 2 & 1 scoring shots. (The 5 was 1.4 by Carlton). They've averaged over 11 themselves.

Sydney/ SM's highest percentage since 1919? I presume that is after a Round 16?

When 'byes' are in the fixture such comparisons are made on matches played.
Sydney/SM 1919 15 matches 166.92% (Round 17 having had byes in rounds 7 and 16).
Sydney/SM 2012 15 matches 148.05% (Round 16).

In 1919 after 16 matches (Round 18) the percentage dropped to 158.71% on the final ladder.
