Re: Post your stats questions here

Has there been a match where team has won without kicking a goal? Or a team winning without kicking a goal and the other team has kicked at least one?

Re: Post your stats questions here

Question prompted from thread in the main forum.

- Games where Team A has kicked 2 more goals than Team B but didn't win?
- Games where Team A has kicked 3 more goals than Team B but didn't win?

Don't think we need to go to 4 goals. I worded them such to include draws (eg. 1948 GF).

To the end of 2010 there were 252 matches won by the team scoring fewer goals. In 229 matches the winning team kicked 1 goal fewer, in 22 matches 2 fewer goals and in 1 match, 3 fewer goals.

More on this

As for draws their have been 2 where 1 team scored 3 more goals.
Besides the drawn GF - round 7, 1935 Carlton 9.25-79 v Footscray 12.7-79

8 draws where one team scored 2 more goals

73 draws where one team scored 1 more goal

Re: Post your stats questions here

Found three.

1956:
- In an 18-game season, Melbourne (1) travelled to Collingwood (1) in Round 18 and won by 13 points.
- After that match, Melbourne finished on top, Collingwood 2nd.
- They met again in the Grand Final where Melbourne won again, this time by 73 points.
- These teams actually met 3 times in 4 weeks. Melbourne won each time.

1963:
- In an 18-game season, Geelong (2) travelled to Hawthorn (1) in Round 18 and won by 38 points.
- After that match, Hawthorn finished on top, Geelong 2nd.
- They met again in the Grand Final where Geelong won again, this time by 49 points.
- These teams actually met 3 times in 4 weeks. Geelong won each time.

1967:
- In an 18-game season, Richmond (1) travelled to Geelong (3) in Round 18 and won by 12 points.
- They met again in the Grand Final where Richmond won again, this time by 9 points.

The other is Essendon v Richmond in the 16 round season of 1943.
In round 16 at Windy Hill Richmond won 14.14-98 v Essendon 10.11-71

Richmond lost the Semi-Final to Essendon next week 9.17-71 v 13.16-94 but then won the GF 12.14-86 v Essendon 11.15-81

Re: Post your stats questions here

this weekends games had quite a number of big streaks heading into them:

- north had beaten melbourne in their last 8 matches
- fremantle had beaten west coast in their last 7 matches
- sydney had beaten port in their last 7 matches
- bulldogs had not lost to richmond in their last 9 matches (including a draw)

is that an unually high amount of streaks for one round?? this is probably something that is quite hard to search for.....

Minor correction - Sydney had won 6 on the trot against Port before last weekend, and the Dogs had gone 8 in a row without a loss v Richmond.

Very unusual...there have only been 6 previous rounds in which four teams had not beaten their opponents for the day in at least 6 matches.

Co v Sy 12 consecutive wins (W)
Ri v WB 8 wins (L)
Ca v Es 7 wins (L)
Fi v NM 6 wins (W)

1936 R16
Ri v Ha 21 wins (L)
Co v St 6 wins (W)
Sy v Es 6 wins (W)
Ca v WB 6 undefeated (2 wins) (W)

1937 R7 (a replica of 1936 R16)

1938 R3

1968 R16

Re: Post your stats questions here

Great work Ron, on "four teams (that) had not beaten their opponents for the day in at least 6 matches." And kudos to Black Thunder for the observation.

I guessed most of them would have been from the 1930's but couldn't figure out a quick way to identify them all.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Tribunal / suspension statistics.

I did a bit of a search around, found some old stuff on the main forum. I don't have the AFL Guide so not sure what stats it has. With Steven Baker getting yet another suspension, I was wanting a list of figures for most tribunal appearances / guilty verdicts / weeks suspended.

The list would include players that have
- been charged 10 times or more
- suspended for a total of 20 or more matches
- be sorted by weeks suspended DESC, charges DESC

I did notice the AFL site has some tribunal stats, current to R6, 2010:

http://stats.afl.com.au/public/stat...on_idIndex=0&guiltyIndex=0&AFLstatisticMenu=1

An incomplete, and in some part incorrect, summary table:

Code:
Player Charges Guilty Weeks
-----------------------------------------
David Rhys-Jones 25 11 22
Greg Williams 19 12 34
Carl Ditterich 19 12 30
Dermott Brereton 15 7 30
Ron Andrews 9 7 24
Barry Hall 13 8 23
Robert Muir 13 9 22
Steven Baker 15 15 28
Gary Ablett Snr 14 10 20
Glen Archer 17 12 10

If you haven't already, the AFL site tribunal stats will paste straight into a spreadsheet and you can then easily do totals etc.

Can then make it up to date with: More Tribunal Records here

Re: Post your stats questions here

So Archer got less weeks than times he was guilty? Is that because he got reprimands or something similar?

Also, Is Steven Baker really 15 for 15? Shows there is no greay areas with him. This being his last year (most likely) imagine if he does a Greg Williams, he'll over-take him as the most suspended. Might as well try and get remembered for something!

Re: Post your stats questions here

Don't pay too much attention to the little table I put up. Some of it is correct, some is not.

Re Archer, 5 times he was found guilty and fined. Another time he was reprimanded for tripping.

That leave 6 times guilty where he copped weeks (2+2+2+2+1+1=10).

Re: Post your stats questions here

I'm happy to do the stats work when I get more time. I just want an easy place to find good stats that get asked about from time to time.

Maybe I should create an index.

As unlikely as it may be, but if I ever generate any stats that interest anyone, partial or complete, please feel free to poach it if for your own purposes eg. if you have your own site.

With the tribunal stats, I'd have to work with the AFL link and combine with 2010 and 2011 data from the Footystats Diary site.
