Re: Post your stats questions here

A genuine question (and not crowing because my team has won a few this year!)

So - can anyone tell me how common it is for a team to have 2 players in it that have got a 10 goal haul in a game and when the last time it occurred (before Lecras and Kennedy)?

Complete list ('Gms' is number of games played together after both players had kicked a bag of 10, including the first game; e.g. Kennedy/LeCras are on 1):

Re: Post your stats questions here

1) How many interstate sides have played 3 times in any particular non-VIC state? (include VIC teams that sold home games)

eg. Collingwood played at Football Park 3 times in 2002; Sydney played at Football Park 3 times in 2003

2) Of those sides, did any go 3-0 or 0-3?

for the eagles

how many reigning wooden spooner's have notched up a 100-point win the next season (or even in the season they were wooden spooners. doubt the latter has happened though)

and if we can beat collingwood this year how often has the previous years wooden spooner beaten the reigning premiers?? I imagine this is probably more common than the first one.

Mmm, misread the question and only ran the query for Victorian clubs. This stuff often gets sandwiched in between real work, hence the occasional error.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Could someone list total number of frees for say across last 31 years (1980 onwards) and frees per game played in a season.

My feeling is number of frees being paid is falling dramatically not only per season but as % per game.

2) Of all current players who has highest number of frees for / game played. (can restrict it say to top 25 players)

Was thinking about it and trying to compare it to these:

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/misc.html#S14
http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/playershi.html#S12

Go here and scroll down to "Game Averages", last column.

The 1917 results pose the question, "who was the 'wooden-spooner' in 1916"?

The title has never really had any official League status but by convention is 'awarded' to the team that is placed last on the ladder at the end of the round of matches ('first round' or 'home and away') before finals are played. In 1916 that team was Fitzroy. As it well known all 4 competing teams in that year played in the finals with the 'wooden-spooner', Fitzroy winning all their finals to take the flag. They were long accepted as the team that 'won' both the 'spoon' and the flag in the same year.

However in recent times the AFL Record Season Guide has retrospectively taken to 'awarding' the 1916 spoon to Richmond who finished 2nd last after the 'home and away' rounds, but lost their one final and have been placed last on a constructed 'final' ladder.

Richmond's final Match/Win % for the year was 41.67% before the finals, 38.46% after, Fitzroy's 20.83% before, 36.67% after.

In my opinion Tiger fans should not accept this ignominy.;)

(Fitzroy remains 'flagged' as the 1916 'wooden-spooner' on my database.)

Interesting point, have noticed this as well. Obviously 1916 is the only season affected in this way. My db has two columns, ladder finish after h&a and ladder finish after finals, with query results varying according to which is used.

Harsh on my club which lost its semi to Carlton, which had easily the season's best record, by three points.

Nice work mate. You making an oversight is the exception that proves the rule that you don't make mistakes :)

Ditto. We reserve the right to correct their mistakes :). In addition, I've split BB/Fitz/BL three ways, and I also haven't recognised Geelong's "win" in the game they lost to St Kilda in 1909.

For a long while, I also defied the absurdity of, say Melbourne playing a "home" game v Brisbane at the Gabba. But as that sort of thing kept happening more and more, and people would write to me pointing out (sometimes quite forcefully) that no, it wasn't a Brisbane home game, I
gave in and home games can be any old place.

Its fortunate we have so few anomalies to deal with.

Whereas the AFL officially deemed the records of Brisbane Bears/Lions as combined and continuous I think the Season Guide giving the spoon to Richmond for 1916 is an error which is in danger of becoming locked-in.

I'll still have the 1909 forfeited game as a Geelong win, as does the AFL and reckon Geelong is 4 wins away from their 1,200th win not 5. Necessitating such:
(If(Game Date=Date(6;5;1909) and Team = "Geelong";1;
If(Game Date=Date(6;5;1909 ) and Team = "St Kilda";0;
If(GetAsNumber(Result:)<0;1;0)))

'Home' games used to be of some interest but now they are really whoever the League puts on the left of the fixture. Moving them has a long history.
The Richmond - Melbourne game at Punt Rd round 17, 1913 was a Melbourne 'home' game moved from the MCG so that the VFA could use it for a final. (Giving a count of 90 Melbourne 'home' games v Richmond or 89 if you reckon Melbourne couldn't have been at 'home' at the Punt Rd Oval.)

Re: Post your stats questions here

hawks had an 87 mark advantage over st kilda not long ago too. 119 is outrageous.

Re: Post your stats questions here

1. How many current players have played at any of: Victoria Park, Western Oval, Waverley Park, the WACA, Princes Park?

(if not too numerous, please list players)

2. For each ground, who was the most recently retired player to have played at any of: Junction Oval, Lake Oval, Windy Hill, Arden St, Moorabbin Oval, North Hobart Oval?

(if there's a tie, please list all players)

Re: Post your stats questions here

Sydney's percentage is exactly 100% after Round 10. How common is this, say in the last 20 years?

I notice that Hawthorn achieved this twice in 2009, after Rounds 6 and 9. Surely that's a rare 'feat'.

Re: Post your stats questions here

They brought that game forward and played it on its own as a season opener. Can't remember the reason, just an experiment I think.

Was Maurice Rioli's first game (BOG). Kevin Bartlett was getting cranky with taggers in his old age, and Fitzroy alleged he broke Graeme Hinchen's jaw behind play in this game. He was reported for the one and only time at Geelong a few weeks later, and got off despite Bruce Nankervis's nose being splayed across his face.
