They are generally kept under lock and key by Champion Data. And then sometimes (poorly) extrapolated into newspaper articles.

It’s lazy work by the journo if there is no context. What does “post-clearance” mean? It’s all well and good to be ranked 8th in the comp for something, but what is the criteria?

If you sign up to Champion Data(is that a thing?), I assume you get access to all of this data?

I wish they still printed the AFL Prospectus, i had all bar two when they were printed between 2006 and 2020, sadly perhaps with Covid an excuse, they stopped printing this book, even at $39.99 i always bought it.

Jacko comes mighty close, in that he didn't exceed his debut tally in 1981 insofar he kicked 76 in both 1981 and 1982 with the Dees. Kicked 74 for Geelong in 1984, wound up with 308 goals in 82 games.

Similar to Jacko, there is Alby Morrison from Footscray (369 goals, 1928-1946) who kicked 50 goals in his debut season, then equalled that total in 1929 but never exceeded 50.
Likewise there is Wayne Richardson from Collingwood (323 goals, 1966-1978) who kicked 37 in his debut season but never exceed it despite again kicking 37 in 1971.

Gary Buckenara kicked 293 goals for the Hawks, but the 60 on debut in 1982 was his apogee for a season. Perhaps had he not done a knee he might have played more games and also reached the 300 goal tally.

This AFL Tables link list goals by season for everyone who has kicked 200 goals. For 300+ goals, some more info;

Westhoff debut season 2007 kicked 34 goals, next best 31 in 2013 - 313 goals over 14 seasons. Was drafted when 20 not 18.

Mark Jackson debut season 1981 kicked 76 goals, next season also kick 76 - 306 goals over 6 seasons

Wayne Richardson debut season 1966 kicked 37 goals, next best is 37 in 1971 - 323 goals over 13 seasons

Alby Morrison played for Footscray debut season 1928 kicked 50 goals, next season also kicked 50 - 369 goals over 14 seasons

A couple in the 200-299 range, Buckenara has been mentioned, but also Allan Jackovich - 71 goals in his debut season in 1991 - total goals 208 in 5 seasons

Paul Roos with 356 games for Fitzroy (1982-1994) and the Sydney Swans (1995-1998) holds the record for the longest playing career without ever playing in a premiership team or a team that collected the wooden spoon, however he did play in a runner-up grand final team, for Sydney against North Melbourne in 1996.

It got me thinking; which player had the longest career with no premierships or wooden spoons; but unlike Paul Roos no runner up team either?

At the other end of the scale (and discounting 1916 Fitzroy players) which player had the shortest career which included both a premiership and a wooden spoon?

Ern Hazel would be a strong candidate - 19 games spread across 5 seasons, which included wooden spoons with St Kilda in 1909 and 1910 (Hazel also played 4 games for Melbourne in 1910, who finished 2nd last), and premierships with Essendon in 1911 and 1912.

How i look at it its all about the now , and the team you barrack for has just won the Premiership they are the reigning Premiers .

Thus the off season discussion in my opinion has to everything about the club who are premiers - in this instance Collingwood

Someone on the Geelong board indicated that we play a side in 2024 within nine matches, but I do remember in 1989 where Geelong played Melbourne in Rd 12 of that season, June 17th. The return bout at Waverley was only five weeks later, July 22nd 1989.

Is that the closest re-match in the H & A in the 14+ team era from 1987 onwards?

In 2008, West Coast and Adelaide played in R2 and R9.

Conversely, Hawthorn and Carlton played once ant that was in R22.

In 1988 Hawthorn played Brisbane Bears in Round 12 and then again in Round 15.
Also, in the 1989 Geelong v Melbourne fixtures you refer to, while the games were five weeks apart they were only four rounds between games. There was a general bye in between, which I think was for the Vic v SA origin game at the MCG.

Brandon Ellis was the last player before Jack Ginnivan to change clubs straight after a premiership win. He was also the fifth player to do so in the decade.

It started with Buddy Franklin who left Hawthorn after the 2013 premiership to go to Sydney.

In 2015, Matt Suckling played in Hawthorn's premiership and then went to Western Bulldogs.

In 2016, Joel Hamling played in the Western Bulldog's premiership and then went to Fremantle.

In 2018, Scott Lycett played in West Coast's premiership and then went to Port Adelaide.

And in 2019, Brandon Ellis played in Richmond's premiership and then went to Gold Coast.

So 5 times in 7 years.

Interestingly, two 2004 premiership players moved to the same team in 2005. Not sure if that's ever been done by two or more players moving to the same team after a premiership, the following year, other than Carr and Schofield.
