What is the most unforced changes made by a side in the finals for a match from week two of the finals onwards? (excluding week one so as not to include "management" situations where players miss the last round of the regular season and are then brought back in large numbers for week one of the finals).

And what is the most changes (forced or unforced) made by a side in the finals for a match from week two of the finals onwards?

Two questions:

1. Who was the last Minor Premier to not make the Grand Final and what year was it

2. In VFL/AFL football how many Minor Premiers have not made the Grand Final and the years this happened.

Appreciate any help.

1980 was quite extraordinary in that both of the top 2 teams - Geelong and Carlton - failed to qualify for the Grand Final, the only time this has happened. The third-placed Richmond defeated Collingwood (fifth) for the premiership.

Thanks very much for the stats, so it seems that it is rare (going by these stats provided) that for the minor premier to NOT make the Grand Final, in VFL/AFL footy.

Would that period of 1902-1940 be skewed by the finals system of the time?

Would that period of 1902-1940 be skewed by the finals system of the time?

There have been several finals systems used over the years. These skew the results such as once the top team had the first week off as a reward and then had two chances to reach the Grand Final. In 1991 oddly they changed the system to have elimination finals for all teams outside top two but the higher ranked team surviving elimination finals actually gained a double chance to then advance to a grand final. So one of teams faced the weekend of being either out straight away or gaining a massive reward. This lasted three seasons before they removed the final six.

We have had the final four systems which varied a little for some time, the final five system which had for about twenty years before the league got bigger in club numbers and wanted a final 6 and then final 8 version one and final 8 version two. Probably about six or seven different types of finals systems that need to be taken into account if wanting to learn anything significant of asking the original question.
It should be noted it is harder now for the minor premier to reach the grand final due to the fundamental fact they no longer get a double chance to reach the grand final. Given the fixture is no longer fair to all clubs it is probably for the better as we cannot be sure a team finishing on top is clearly deserving of exactly being number one side of home and away. Different sides play certain opponents twice and their is varying degrees of home ground advantages teams get across their 22 home and away games.

What is the most goals kicked in a half by a player?

Probably 10 or more.
What is the best in a game?
Fanning 18 I believe.
Templeton got 15 in 1978 in first season I ever followed football and remember guys like Ablett getting 14 and Lockett probably 16 at Western Oval, same place Templeton got his 15.

As a Carlton supporter I can remember a game Silvagni started at full back and we were losing to Fitzroy at home.
I cannot remember when SOS got shifted to full forward that match but he kicked 10 goals in the game so if it was at half time he kicked 10 in a half. I have a vague feeling he was moved to full forward a little earlier than half time.
Given how often Lockett kicked over 10 goals in a game I reckon it will be him and probably would not be surprised to hear him kick 12 in a half.

It has been well observed by Bulldogs supporters that this season we have doubled our total of wins from last season. How often has a team performed this feat? (including finals)
How often has a team tripled its wins from one season to the next? (including finals)

I have finally gotten around to researching my own question. A team doubling or tripling their wins totals from one season to the next has actually happened quite frequently; 144 times in fact. Mathematically the biggest improvement was when North Melbourne improved eleven-fold from 1972 to 1973, due to the fact they won only one game in 1972. There are many other instances where teams have doubled, tripled, even quadrupled one, two, three or four win seasons, especially prior to World War II. I have decided to produce a table which shows the most wins each team has doubled from one season to the next (including finals). In situations where a club has doubled the same number I have used the season wherein the club produced the most wins the next season; in other words, apart from the instance listed below, Adelaide also doubled 8 wins in 1996 and 1997. I have listed the 2004-2005 instance as Adelaide improved to 17 games in 1997 but in 2005 they won an extra game.

Good work, just out of interest. What is the biggest fall in terms of ratio of wins from one season to the next?
Example Richmond 1982 Grand Final to 1983.

What's the highest age difference between teammates and what's the lowest average age spread for a team?

Greatest age difference between teammates 23.27 years, Colin Watson 19y244d & Vic Cumberland 42y344d, St.Kilda R7 1920 v Geelong. Cumberland is involved in the top ten instances, paired with six different teammates.

Lowest average for a team is 21.82, Hawthorn R12 1956 v Collingwood.

Yes, I have it fractionally behind the R22 2004 game between Hawthorn & Geelong, 147.86 v 147.93, total games 6506 v 6509.
thanks, but that looks to be wrong having a look at afltables, where is the Brisbane/Adelaide Semi Final 03 that is what I had as number 1 but that is as far back I have that data.

Cheers for the first part but second part refers to least amount of ages.
Like, one team could consist solely of 25, 26 and 27 year olds.

P.s. AFL Tables has Round 7 as STK v SM.

Yep, sorry, I looked it up manually and made a mistake. You're right, the 2003 SF is #1. Figures are the same though. R22 2004 is the highest rating h&a match at #6.
