If we got rid of him like some were saying earlier in the year, we don't win against North.

Hopefully can rotate into that centre square more often too.
He was fantastic when moved into the midfield.

I love how Fly isn't afraid to move players around. Beau on LDU. Frampton into defence. Howe forward.

I've been watching Steele more closely since we lost Pendlebury. Don't underestimate how much of a general he is out there too. His experience and footy IQ is so valuable. He's helped fill that void left by Pendles the past few weeks. You see him pointing and guiding the others out there.

I'd be offering him another year now if I was our list manager.

Yeah. He'll be getting another year unless something goes pear shaped. You could justify another two for Howe - he's in ripping form. He's still a good athlete and his skills and games sense are so good that it's hard to see anything other than injury forcing him out in the next couple of years.

We need to recruit some more Ginnivans then to ignore him and kick around the corner anyway.

💯 That's exactly the reason Fly put Sidebottom in the midfield when he needed the team to lift.

And lift they did.

Yes, until there is someone else to replace him, he stays.

Elliott, Sidey and Pendles are my favourites and although not the performance some expect week in week out, they are still valuable to the team.

I'm really glad we got a reminder of the leadership and inspiration that Rusty provides this team. We all know about Pendles as an onfield coach and we regularly see the firestarters (both Daicos's, Bobby Hill, Jamie Elliot, WHE, JDG) but with lots of talent and experience out of the team and a rampant opponent that got 9 GOALS ahead....Steele was sent (alongside Beau and Crispy) to flip the midfield and get some momentum going our way.
His ability to keep his feet and find ways out of stoppages, his vision and ability to hit targets really got us going and he just keeps running (like he always has).

In his first year at the Pies on a similarly forsaken day when we were supposed to belt a lowly Melbourne team and played about as poorly as we did in the first half yesterday, Sidey ran and ran all day and in the final seconds ran back with the flight of the ball to spoil a certain Demon's goal which would have won them the game. 16-17 years on, he's still doing it and we've been blessed to have him at our club alongside Pendles and now these new kids....the smile just never leaves his face.

Can't really complain about Steele wanting to continue on. He's been a bit shaky at times this year but he's a helpful player to have around. He's also a club legend, so sentimentally it's nice as well.

The retirements in the next 1-2 years are gonna be very interesting. There's a chance that Pendles, Sidey, Howe, Cox and Mitchell all retire in the same year....

Happy for Sidey. He played like a man desperate for another year last game.

I'm actually glad all the old guys are staying on next year. Their form is decent and there just aren't enough guys knocking the doors down in the 2's. Hopefully next year a few of them will demand a spot off them though.

Regardless, it'll be next year or bust for this group. Then we have to face the inevitable.
