Sidebottom is an interesting one, he seems to be one of those guys who just racks them up without you even noticing, i think hes done well but not great in his first few games but the upside is huge he knows how to get the footy and where to go, he has very very good footy smarts but athletically not great and isnt quick i would compare him to a Jobe Watson or James Kelly very unasuming but damaging in the same sense.

Not sure about his speed but I seem to recall reading he's already close to being our best over 3K.

See that doesn't tell me Rusty is slow, it tells me Thoolan is quicker than him.

[My glass is always half full]
Well, you cited Marc Murphy as being a similar pace to Rusty, but Murphy would break the 3 sec barrier and Cotchin would be quicker still. Sidebottom is just plain slow, however you wish to view your glass.

Upon what do you base your opinion?

I don't have Murphy's 20m time available, and granted neither he nor Cotchin would have finished top-10, but Murphy did finish top-10 in the agility test which indicates he's pretty quick. Sidebottom would be in the bottom 20% with his time which is a long way behind.

Kevin Sheehan described Cotchin at draft time as; “He’s quite brilliant around goal and he can take the contested mark, he can stand on their shoulders at times, so he’s a very gifted, very quick, inside, medium midfielder.”

I don't recall anyone describing Sidebottom as being very quick, or even somewhat quick for that matter.

He is what he is, great foot skills, some amount of presence in traffic, not endowed with any great foot speed. But thats not a negative, he seems to know where the ball is and can use it.

He is young still and still needs to be assesed over a number of years, like beams.

He is slowish , but he has good ground skills , evasiveness and kicks fluently on both feet which is crucial if you aren't quick.
He hasn't been found out for his lack of pace yet , his brain and skills have made sure of that.

In any good midfield there is always at least one person who isn't quick. Sam Mitchell and Jimmy Bartel, though I might be a little harsh on Jimmy as I don't see that many geelong games now.

Tough players who can hold their own, and have the ability to be very clean with the ball, are one of the great assets each football club needs.

Steele Sidebottom's game is never going to suffer due to lack of pace. He knows where to run.

IMO you are incredibly wrong

Sampler's position, though, is not an opinion - it is tested fact.

Murphy is quicker than Sidebottom. Murphy ran a 2.98 for his draft camp year. That is quicker than Sidebottom.

I don't think Cotchin did the sprint due to injury his year, but he is comfortably quicker than both players.

This is true, however we wouldn't want too many more as we already project as having Pendles and Beams in there as well. And Swan isn't lightening either, in terms of "break-away-from-the-pack" pace.

Not sure about that. Malcom Blight and Dane's old man (a very good VFA footballer) have both described him as being a lot faster than he looks - and, give him a yard or two when he's on a lead, he will almost always beat his man to the ball. As with Pendles, I think he also has a good combination of reasonable speed and good endurance. Consequently, with repetitive 80-100m leads, he often tends to break his tagger down - as with Buckley, R. Harvey and Crawford at their peak. Hopefully, we'll get something similar out of Sidebottom.

Still, I agree - I'd love to see a bit more genuine pace among our mids (and, in fact, all over the park).

We'd also have McCarthy, Davis and Wellingham who are all very quick. Rounds is also developing in the VFL and runs an under 3 sec 20m from memory. I think it just means we need the balance right with the support cast.

Why don't you make a thread on it? I think it would be a swell idea.

:thumbsu:

Who cares about how quick a player tests over 20 metres? I couldnt care less because players who A) Get to the right spots and B) think half a second and react half a second quicker than their opponent are more valueble for sure and from all reports Steele fits in to this category.
