Steve Johnson - Better than Daicos!

No, SJ is quite possibly one of the best left foot kicks going around.

Daicos loved a shot at the big sticks, but SJ prides himself on decision making, vision ans setting up team mates.

SJ is also considerably harder at the pill and can play just as effectively at full forward, half forward and in the middle.

SJ for mine is the more valuable to the team and is the equal of Daicos in terms of pure skill.

I love watching Stevie J play, he's one of my favourite non Collingwood players in the league. But seriously...he'd laugh at that post himself.

When Daicos was at full flight in the middle, we weren't getting the same amount of TV coverage that we get today. Many would have been stuck with highlights packages and part of a game on Saturday night replays. Even then, you wouldn't see a Collingwood game each week. So it's difficult for many to say that Daics is better or Johnson is better.
Yes the game was slower when Daics ran around but there just didn't seem to be the same space to operate in.
I am a Johnson fan, saw Daicos every week for a long time and still find it hard to separate them. Let's enjoy both of them for what they were/are, football wizards who don't come along often enough. Throw Gary Ablett Snr in there and we have the Holy Trinity of Aussie Rules. Amen Brothers & Sisters

yup - Daicos was a really good centreman, if I'm not wrong it was continued injuries which virtually forced him to camp in the forward pocket and work his magic.
but yeah, Daicos pretty much forged his reputation as a centreman.

and your point on television coverage is a good one; this extends to the amazing career of Gary Ablett snr - who, although there are *plenty* of highlights captured on film, there were still some weeks when you'd *hear* he'd taken a couple of speccys, but you wouldn't get an opportunity to watch them unless you went to the game.

Daicos was awesome, one of my favourite non-Geelong players.

I've never seen a player who looked more natural on his wrong foot than Daicos. He could literally spend an entire game using his left and maintain his disposal efficiency and goal kicking accuracy. In fact I could have sworn he did this in a few games. Being a youngster during his later years as a forward player I spent significant portions of time thinking he was in fact a natural left footer.

dual-sidedness was far more prevalent in them days - Daicos was certainly very good on either foot (and his torps were consistent).
Ablett snr. was of course a freak and could kick a lazy 60m on his left without a problem.
Buddha Hocking a bit later on could regularly roost the pill 55m on his left foot in his early days.

It's a neglected part of the game these; most players prefer to get onto their natural foot when disposing of the ball no matter what; Sam Mitchell is one player who really opens up so many more options for himself in tight situations because he is totally comfortable setting up his kick on either foot efficiently and quickly.

It has less to do with distance kicked on the non preferred, I think there are actually quite a few that can roost it on their wrong foot even today, but more to do with the angles with which he could kick it. There are certain angles with which footballers could kick cleanly on their correct foot that they simply could not manage on their wrong foot with any accuracy, even with a decent amount of competency. For example a curler with the instep. Rolling over the ball with the foot when kicking in order to get right to left movement. Daicos could do these things even on the full gallop, get angles that most players would struggle with even on their preferred.

Akermanis is probably one of recent times who comes somewhat close.

Daicos could kick goals from impossible angles like no one else could.
I am not sure if he was naturally gifted or trained and trained and trained?

Both. Apparently as a kid he used to roll up balls of sticky tape and kick them through knot holes in the fence. (I work with a cousin of his.)

I freakin loved Daicos!

One of my all time favorite players and also one of my most feared. I was only young watching him play but I do remember feeling uneasy and concerned for our chances of winning if he was playing.
Must have been only 7 at the time but we went to a game out at Waverley park, was a cold rainy day and we were sitting on the pocket ground level and I remember Bluey McGrath trying his best to keep up with him but they running toward the boundary and I thought McGrath would tackle him over the line but Daicos soccered it and I then this huge roar followed.
I never got a chance to see him play live as much as I wanted as Collingwood played at Vic park and the oldman obviously hated traveling out that way to such a hostile ground but that goal is now immortalized by all footy lovers and only years later after his retirement did I go through his history and find out he battled chronic injuries throughout his career and it was a knee injury? which forced him into retirement.

I reckon if Stevie J can play at the same level he currently is for another 2/3 seasons then he may indeed surpass Daicos but Daicos was just a freak of the highest order.
Only two players could kick an impossible goal and then do it again the following week...Daicos & Ablett, the rest are just making up the numbers when it came to pure creativity :p

This one?

I was at that Carrara match. He kicked more than Brisbane's entire score. Don't think Stevie J has ever managed that feat?

I think you're right. He's come close a couple of times.
Almost did it 2 weeks in a row:
R19 2011 - SJ: 7.1.43 vs Melbourne: 7.5.47
R20 2011 - SJ: 6.1.37 vs Gold Coast: 6.2.38

He had 10 goal assists in that game versus Melbourne too.

SJ highlights from the Melbourne game...

Throw Modra in there too.

A pleasure to watch these blokes play. Their highlight reel from one match could top others across an entire career.

lol, if he converted every single assist into a goal he'd still be short :)
When Daicos moved to permanent forward, I think in 1990, he was unbelievable for two years and almost kicked the ton. However it was also the era when even John Longmire and Allen Jackovich where regularly appearing alongside the names Ablett, Lockett and Dunstall.

It's natural to glorify the legend of Daicos as it is with all past champions....but currently and consistently over at least the past 6 years, Stevie J has been incredible and has 3 premierships a norm smith and multiple AA selections to show for it.....he will go down every bit the equal of Daicos and with 4 years to play he may well slip back into a permanent forward role and kick a lazy 60 odd a year!

Football pron.

The amount of times goal umpires shake their head in disbelief is a common theme.

Banks to Brown to Daics almost brought a tear to the eye, even for a Geelong supporter. 3 favourite players of mine.

You've just got to chuckle watching some of those goals. I'm sure that SHocking and Carlton fans would love watching that package.

I'm sure that one of the goals that Landy called as a Daic's snap from the right forward pocket was actually a drop punt. Brought back memories of Aker's to drop punt goals against the Cats in the pizzling rain up at the Gabba.

Thank **** that Stevie J did his ankle jumping, iirc, The Torquay Hotel fence while he was pissed or else he may have ended up at Collingwood or Essendon. Who knows, if he didn't do his ankle, we may have been treated to his best for a lot longer.

Oh, just because it sounds like utter crap is all
Utter is a strong word! I was really trying to divert attention away from Pies posters hijacking this thread, reliving some passage of play in 1991...
