over the years it seems that not that many musos have made it big in more than one band , if at all.

it seems they only get one shot at the big time and when that's finished they shuffle off stage never to be seen again.............why is this so??

i can only think of a few fortunates that managed to extend their careers:

jimmy page......yardbirds > led zeppelin

paul mccartney....beatles > wings

john lennon......beatles > solo

george harrison.....beatles > solo

rod stewart.......the faces > solo

ronnie wood.......the faces > stones

im scratching my head now.

Define success?

Iggy Pop......The Stooges > solo

Lou Reed.......Velvet Underground > solo

Henry Rollins........Black Flag > Rollins Band

Dave Navarro......Janes Addiction > Red Hot Chili Peppers

Ossy Osborne........Black Sabbath > solo

Ronnie James Dio.......Rainbow > Black Sabbath

Perry Farrell.......Janes Addiction > Porno for Pyros

Neil Finn............Split Enz > Crowded House

Johnny Lydon......Sex Pistols > Public Image Ltd.

Most of Joy Division > New Order

Dave Grohl..........Nirvana > Foo Fighters

........and many more

More of a metal theme:
Lee Dorrian....... Napalm Death -> Cathedral
Samoth....... Emperor -> Zyklon
Rob Trujillo....... Suicidal Tendencies/Infectious Grooves -> Osbourne band -> Metallica
Rob Halford....... Judas Priest -> solo career
Glenn Danzig....... The Misfits -> solo career plus other projects
Dan Lilker....... about 14 different bands!
Devin Townsend....... Steve Vai band -> Strapping Young Lad, solo career and other projects
Mike Patton....... Faith No More -> so many projects since FNM

BTW Dave Grohl's best work IMO was with Probot.

bands are not solo acts so I make the distinction.............

Ronnie Wood: Faces and Rolling Stones
Eric Clapton: Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and The Dominoes
George Harrison: Beatles and Travelling Wilburys
Paul McCartney: Beatles and Wings (2nd highest selling act of 70's)
Dave Grohl: Nirvana and Foo Fighters
Finn Brothers: Splat Indz and Crowded House
Tom Petty: Heartbreakers and Wilburys
Neil Young: Buffalo Springfield and Crazy Horse (with)

Forgot about CSNY...

Who can forget Stephen Stills, the only person to be inducted into the R&R Hall of fame twice on the same day, for Buffalo Springfield and CSNY.
And you could include Nash (Hollies) and Crosby (Byrds) in this list as well.

As do I. ;)

You can also include Lynne (ELO) with those in the Travelling Wilburys.

The guys from At the Drive-In did went on to make Sparta and Mars Volta, so there's a couple more. John Sampson was in Propagandhi before starting the Weakerthans. Ben Gibbard does Death Cab For Cutie and Postal Service.

There would have to be hundreds, especially when a band breaks up and they all go off and start new projects.

Waylon Jennings solo and The Crickets

what's the criteria? The question in the thread says more than one band but a lot of people have mentioned a transition from successful band to successful solo career.

its just mean that this would have to include

Beyonce Knowles - Destiny's child -> solo

Justin Timberlake - N'sync -> solo

which isn't really another band

You could also mention

Dr Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E - NWA -> Solo

A clear one would have to be

Damon Albarn - Blur -> Gorillaz

Ian Brown - The Stone Roses -> solo

All the guys from Audioslave

Norman Cook - Housemartins -> Fatboy Slim (and all his other guises)

Paul Heaton - Housemartins -> Beautiful South

Dave Parson - bassist in Transvision Vamp -> bassist in Bush

Stevie Nicks - Fleetwood Mac -> solo

Belinda Carlisle - The go go's -> solo

Bjork - Sugarcubes -> solo

Kevin Shields - My Bloody Valentine & Primal Scream
Gram Parsons - Flying Burrito Brothers & The Byrds
Andy Bell - Ride & Oasis
Dave Mustaine - Metallica & Megadeth

i was thinking more of really successful bands/solo not moderately well known outfits.

think about jeff beck who could never make it big after the yardbirds thou he tried many different projects and bands.................he got the boiled lollies, jimmy got the chocolates.
