Yep a massive brainfade decision that is for sure.
Why? Why? Why? I am completely devastated by today’s announcement. What a horrible decision on moving on Jade. Our worst AFLW list Management ever. Jade didn’t deserve to be treated like this. She is our best defender and one of the best in the competition. One of our greatest AFLW players ever. She was loyal to the Club and her team - one example from last season that I witnessed firsthand. She travelled down to Hobart to watch the team play in Round 1 when she was out with her ACL even though she didn’t have to... She cheered all game and supported the girls - she also made and effort to say g’day to me at the game which I really appreciate! She is the heart and soul of our womens program and is a major part of our AFLW culture.. this is now gone. She brought leadership to the team in a team full of young and developing players. She is not only a fantastic player but a ripper of a person and appreciated all supporters, members and her teammates. I really hope I am seeing her in the AFLW next season because she is one of the best players and people in the game. I still don’t understand why the Club has made this decision. Please explain why this decision has been made. We demand answers.

She’s listed on Southport Sharks instagram as playing for them

Its unfortunate, and sucks for her. Delistings had to happen, and she was unlucky... but that's just business unfortunately. You had to have room to bring others in, or for the upcoming draft.

There’s worse than her you could easily delist

Unfortunately, she is coming off a long term injury. She is also an older player, which is great for career experience but not great for overall list management, especially off an injury.

Not saying it is the right choice though.

Proof will be in the pudding. If another AFLW club picks her up and she plays well for them then we've obviously made a big mistake. If no other AFLW team picks her up then that tells me that she probably hasn't recovered as well as they would have liked from the ACL injury and at 32 years old by the time next season rolls around, it's just not worth it from their perspective. It's sort of a Rory Thompson vs Ben King situation and unfortunately Pregelj is Rory Thompson in this scenario. If she was younger like Ben King then I have no doubt we would have retained her for at least another season.

If it's true that she's playing this upcoming QAFLW season with Southport then she'll get her chance to prove that she still has what it takes to make it at the AFLW level in the lead up to the draft.

I know it is a part of footy but there are other names I would have delisted before Jelly. She as I said was one of the best Suns players we have had ever. She was very consistent and brought leadership to a team that had a lot of youth. With the overage draft coming up, Club’s I’m pretty sure don’t need to select anyone so we could have kept the same list.

She is playing for Southport this QAFLW season because she didn’t get an AFLW contract with the Suns. I would expect she hopes she still gets an AFLW opportunity with another club and I fully expect another club to pick her up.

Yes she has come off an ACL. If we didn’t have Season 7, she would’ve still been contracted for the upcoming season and would’ve had the chance to show her recovery post ACL. Even if she wasn’t fully back to her best, she was still an integral part of our backline and would’ve been a must have. Yes she is older but in a team full of youth, is that necessary a bad thing?

So, who are the players you would de-list before Pregelj? So, they and their supporters can be upset with you.

4 players gone - Pregelj, TGL, Atkins, Scott. We must have some deals in place.

I liked Pregelj too. But not demanding answers. You could write letter and get a call, meeting.

Depends on the timing of the next AFLW season, but as far as I’m aware, all the QLD based Suns and Lions women play in the QAFLW when there’s no AFLW season on.

Family comes first.

Must be something serious.

GOLD Coast forward Courtney Jones is requesting a trade back to Victoria for family reasons.

The 22-year-old is understood to have been very happy at the Suns and was initially planning to stay on, but her family has come first in this particular situation.

Jones started her career at Carlton, making her debut in her third season on the list and playing nine games for eight goals in season six.

She then moved to Gold Coast for season seven, once again booting eight goals from nine matches.

The Suns will work to find a suitable home via a trade for Jones.

Another blow. Courtney was a terrific pick up for Club. Hope we can get good value for her.

Hope everything is okay with her family though. Family must come first.
Unfortunate but not much you can do in a situation like this. It reminds me of when Dayne Beams was playing for Collingwood and his father got diagnosed with bowel cancer. Beams never wanted to leave the Pies but he also knew he needed to be near his father for those last few years of his life so naturally he requested a trade to his brother's club. Although this situation is completely uncontrollable, the likelihood of a player requesting a trade interstate is dramatically decreased when said player is homegrown so there's more incentive to develop our own in that sense.

It could be worse. Look at how many significant players the Lions are losing at the moment. They've literally lost their All-Australian/BnF winner and the league's leading goalkicker over the last week as well as other solid players. Two massive blows for them, especially considering both are products of their own academy. Who knows how competitive the Brisbane Lions will be next year but perhaps we'll finally have a shot at winning an AFLW QClash for once.

Losing Ellie Hampson would hurt a fair bit. IMO she's our second best player behind Rowbottom and the margin is razor thin in my mind. I saw her at our AFL practice match against Essendon a few weeks ago so hopefully that's an indication that she intends on staying with us! Can't say I'm surprised Brisbane have targeted her - they love stealing players from us.

Well if you would stop delisting them first...😝

Who did they steal? I believe zero.

Smith delisted, Heslop delisted, Lyons delisted, Ah Chee Suns were not willing to offer the same money and length of contract. Still zero, IMO. Hampson could be the first one.
Smith was actually traded to Brisbane after they targeted her. The media were talking about Heslop going to Brisbane even before we delisted her so I think that was pre-arranged. The Lyons situation was dodgy as hell because he waited until after the trade period ended to ask to be delisted and then joins Brisbane for free. Ah Chee was supposed to be a part of our young crop of talent that would take us up the ladder as a former top 10 pick but the Lions presented him with an offer he couldn't refuse and our salary cap was not in order back then so we couldn't match it.

Losing Hampson would be a big blow IMO.

This is sad, hope she gets back into it once she is refreshed.

PORT Adelaide midfielder Jacqui Yorston has decided to step away from football for 12 months, moving to the inactive list for the 2023 season.

Yorston, who was recruited from Gold Coast in the Power's initial list build, will take the time out to focus on her physical and mental wellbeing and reconsider her AFLW career some time down the track.

Wonder if it's got anything to do with relocating to Adelaide and not having a support network there? We know her partner Tanah Boyd plays for the Titans and wouldn't have been able to join her in Adelaide which would have made it tough. Hopefully she comes back to the Coast where her loved ones are based and can improve her physical/mental wellbeing.

Seems a fair few who have left the suns have been delisted or like Jacqui, taking time away.

I remember Charlie Dixon once saying on a podcast that when he got to Adelaide he thought he made the biggest mistake of his life after living the cruisy beach lifestyle on the Gold Coast for a while and then just got smashed with an intense footy culture bubble where it would get really cold. The lifestyle is just sooo different in Adelaide so I'm not really surprised to see others leaving after giving it a go for a year. It's even more difficult when you don't have your support network there to help you in those tough moments.

Definitely different, whether its SA or even down here in melb. I imagine it would take some getting used to. Some may not be able to adjust, or can't make it work. Like Charlotte Hammans got delisted by carlton
Britt Perry also from port.
