Flanders Ainsworth to get midfield minutes?
Davies coming good.
Powell to a wing?

Hard to fit everyone into our forward line

With talk of Sharp leaving, I imagined Powell might move up the ground to the wing. Makes sense to me. He has a pretty damaging kick.

Seems Dew is keen on Flanders. Talks about him often.

Weller could be another option when he returns late in the season. We’ve been using both in defence out of necessity, but that might not need to be the case if we make the right moves this off-season.

Problem is.. he might like what he does in the VFL as a mid then he names he at Half forward

It ain’t the same

I love the sound of adding rotations to the midfield to see what Hollands/Flanders/Davies can do, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Powell looked great on a wing and showed quite a bit of potential offensively. However, our defence is easily our weakest part of the ground, so he may have to play there out of necessity?

Our forward line is still looking quite exciting even with Rankine going. King/Chol/Jeffrey/Rosas all goal scoring threats and if Luko and Ainsworth can figure out how to hit a basic set shot then they are also capable of multiple goal games. Noah and Touk can also kick a goal if they rest forward if Dews words are true about the midfield rotations.

Just wondering why we did not explore other players more in 2022. The only explanation I can come up with is that they wanted to advance Anderson and Rowell as much and as quickly as possible.

Article did not mention Bowes.

Anderson could reach Miller's level next year. Rowell with hopefully a healthy body and full pre-season, who knows. Can we fast forward to round 1 2023? I can't wait :)

Personally, I disagree. IMO, our midfield was still the weakest link in 2022. Too many times we lost battle there if not for the whole game then for 1-2 quarters. But yes, injuries in defence hurt us pretty badly after bye. Our drive from defence disappeared, some dumb turnovers too. But any defence struggles if put under pressure.

Inability to convert is another critical issue (probably in 80% of games). Giving opposition a head start in again 80% of games is another big problem.

To be honest, in today's game players have to be able to play multiple positions. It does not hurt them to learn in VFL. I always look at Swans how they do it. Most of their young stars toiled in VFL in different positions and a lot of them did this year too.

The whole man of many talents master of none is a furphy in my opinion. Role players are the life blood of teams like Geelong, Collingwood and the Swans

Good notice on the Bowes.

Maybe he is one of the players looking to be moved to free up cash

IMO, game changed a bit. Teams certainly prefer players who can play multiple positions to be able to adjust/modify plan as required. E.g.,our Powell who can play back, on the wing, forward. To rotate more players through midfield to keep it fresh, players have to be able to play other positions. Contrary to your favourite Brodie who is borderline useless beyond inside and as a result plays 65% ToG or Fiorini who also can't play outside.

Players better be exceptional in one role to survive. Hawks Mitchell and Crows M Crouch are another midfield examples. 3-4 years ago they belonged to best and now they struggle to draw interest from other teams. Compare to midfielders who can move to and do damage forward or can play inside/outside or can run 2-ways and defend. Obviously, KPPs, small forward/defenders are a bit different story.

Good points. The way we are set up, we will either live or die by the performance of our midfield, so it does stand out when they are down. The slow starts were concerning as well and its up to the players to fix that, as is the set shot accuracy. Looking at our 22, I think the midfield continues to improve just due to natural growth of Noah and Rowell, plus hopefully one of Davies, Flanders or Bowes becomes a viable option in there, so I’m not too worried there. There are always going to be games where we are beaten in the middle, so we need to be able to attack through other avenues.

But we are really only bringing back Ballard (and Long I guess) to a backline that conceded a scoring shot roughly every second inside 50 in the last month. As soon as we turned the ball over in our foward line, our defence looked like they had no idea what to do or where to go, and there was absolutely no sense of structure. In saying that though, Ballard as the interceptor across half-back does make a massive difference there (I didn’t realise quite how big a difference, but the results speak for themselves), so hopefully it is as simple as plugging him back in. Long term we are fine with Powell/Weller/Budarick, but the depth isn’t there yet So any injury will hurt.

Or the club is looking to move him against his desire
I hope this is not correct, kid has talent and loves the club. If it’s a $$$ thing they should be looking to sign a revised contract like they did with Darcy

Tbh. Bowes hasn’t looked top 22 for a couple years.

Injuries and form..
Played out of position

If they want to get the salary cap down to X figure he’d be one of a couple to look at.

Would have currency too.

Sucks he is a Qlder though.

2016 super draft. Scott Clayton at his pinnacle.

Bowes has been smashed with injuries so I think it’s a little unfair to judge him so critically.

For what it’s worth Miller had his breakout year at the same age as Bowes now
Looks lazy and disinterested half the time
Decisions making all over the shop..

time will tell, Dew names about 4 players ahead of him already..
Didn’t even mention Bowes by name in the article about future growth

So he’ll be coming from a long way back

Interesting Josh Rachele & Jake Soligo re-signed before they kicked a footy.

Could they be making the same mistakes as us? 6 years later .... Rankine (22yo) $$$

Rachelle will be a Sun before his contract is done :padlock:

First year of RFA at worst
