If you would tell me that we lose just one player (we wanted to keep) in 6 years when Dew started (after Lynch, May), I would not believe you. Most teams actually lost more players.

Rankine is just one player although with extreme talent and perfect fit for us. Rankine played us, I say f*** him and move on.

We got Humphrey because Rankine left. Who knows but Humphrey could turn out as good or even better player for us.

It's a team game, all players must play roles. Looking at Richmond premiership teams, there were many ordinary role players.

Let's see GWS game line-up. FWIW, I feel like Berry and Macpherson will complement Ainsworth, Holman, King, Luko and Casboult/Day. Humphrey and other midfielders will spend time forward too.

Later in the season probably Walter, Rosas and Rogers, next year Lombard. IMO, not a bad line-up.

It will be interesting to see if Rogers is ready and gets opportunity against GWS. Probably not. Read could be a surprise inclusion too.

I've cried into my beer and pretzels over Rankine and it's just part of football
Guys like him are so rare and it's the one position we've struggled to fill since forever..and also the reason the Crows paid overs
I still have high hopes for Mally and Triple J (Joel Jeffery Jet)

Just curious, if you would have to choose between Rankine and Humphrey, which one would you go with?

Right now.. Rankine… ask me after seeing Humphrey for 4 years down the track I might change my mind.

Your only as good as your last season.

Rogers has to be ready when fit. These u18s are guns now. Rookies can play out the year no fuss.

Also the same for Clohesy Read Walter & Graham

I think, guns is a bit over, haha, but yeah, we possibly won lottery with all 4 of them. Clohesy also looked promising. Surprisingly, no other team touched him.

Ace travelled to Canberra.

he had interest, reckon if you didn't pick him early in the rookie draft, someone would have.
And he keeps that best young player in the vfl record going.

Yeah, but nobody picked him up in draft which looking how he performed against Lions is surprising to me. Did he travel to Canberra, do you know? He could turn out a very good pick up by Suns.

I think clubs are hesitant to take vfl players in the national draft, so they usually use the rookie draft for it. Charlie Dean was the same after he won the same award.

I reckon he'll end up a good player, will play a lot of afl footy.
I'd be shocked if he wasn't included to play imo, but I'll keep an eye out on socials.

Yeah, started against Lions and played well. He definitely surprised me. He should be in.

Yeah, I was impressed. His running capability, then moved forward and kicked a goal. He has composure, good skills. And for someone thats only transitioned on the wing, this is good signs.

Exactly, also wings are not our strong points.
Definitely was an area that needed depth, and hopefully he can lock down that role on the wing. Rather than having to use players better suited elsewhere on the wing because there are no players that are capable (minus Ellis)

Interesting comments from mac Andrew on afl.com, sees the forward ruck role as an experiment and sees himself going back to the backline. Had an interrupted pre-season with covid, hamstring and concussion. Will be an interesting development over the next week to find out where he sits in dimmas plans.

Is he just keeping the spot warm for Walter?

This is the problem with coming out and saying Finals are the floor of the season. But the pressure on the club to perform from a media point of view for once is a good thing.
I definitely think there's merit in stating that the club expects to play finals this year, particularly when you have a coach like Dimma who has the knowhow to deliver on such a statement. We need to keep in mind that we're based in a northern state and that means there's very little pressure being applied by the media that can be used to hold the playing group accountable week-to-week and drive internal standards.

Bob East, Mark Evans and Dimma would have discussed the idea of going public with their finals aspirations before any statements were made and I'd say they all came to the conclusion that it was a good idea to give the media a reason to hold us accountable throughout the season. Obviously that adds pressure to the playing & coaching groups but at the same time you kind of need that to take the steps forward that we want to take. Don't forget that after finishing second last the year before, we saw Richmond announce in early 2010 that they wanted to win three flags by 2020 and Dimma was the man that delivered on that seemingly unachievable statement.

Is it even remotely possible that Dimma didn’t want to show the game plan against the Giants, I know I’m clutching at straws here, but I want to believe we have a hidden process that’s So incredibly awesome that he wants to hide it until round one starts.

It's possible that Dimma has done a Chuck Daly here and could have purposely played these two pre-season games in a way where we were virtually guaranteed to look bad. We know Dimma has been looking into basketball lately with his comments about the Toronto Raptors so I don't think it's that farfetched. For those who don't know, Chuck Daly was a coach who famously took the reigns of the original 1992 USA Basketball Dream Team and to everybody's surprise they lost their first pre-Olympic game to a college team made up of teenagers.

To put it in perspective, the Dream Team included players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and other legends of the sport so they were very much expected to smash every opponent on their way to the Olympic gold medal... but Daly was struggling to keep these massive egos in line and purposely threw the game against a team made up of college kids by doing things like playing guys out of position, not making any in-game adjustments, keeping Jordan on the bench much longer than he should have etc. Daly even went as far as to end the session early when the Dream Team started coming back in a big way. So this team of all stars suffered an embarrassing loss to a team of amateurs and then the media entered the gym. So the players had to immediately face the music in that moment. It was a very clever tactic from Daly that ensured the players felt a sense of urgency and were going to give 100% effort/listen to him moving forward.

Daly had a very simple message for the players after the loss which was 'anyone can beat you so you have to show up for every game' and sure enough the Dream Team would belt the college kids by 100 points the next day when Daly could see that his players were locked in and he chose to coach properly this time around to really ram home the point. So maybe there's a bit of that at play with Dimma right now because he knows he needs all his players to be 100% invested for the club to reach the top of the mountain. It's widely known that Dimma has a history of starting slow in the early stages of a season and this situation only backs up the theory even more because premierships aren't won in March. You need to be peaking in the late August/September period and Richmond were the kings of that for several years when their premiership window was open:

2017 - Started the season 5-4 after 9 rounds
R22 - Tigers def. Dockers 155-51 @ Subiaco
R23 - Tigers def. Saints 122-81 @ MCG
QF - Tigers def. Cats 91-40 @ MCG
PF - Tigers def. Giants 103-67 @ MCG
GF - Tigers def. Crows 108-60 @ MCG

2018 - Started the season 1-1 as defending premiers
R22 - Tigers def. Bombers 81-73 @ MCG
R23 - Tigers def. Bulldogs 98-95 @ MCG
QF - Tigers def. Hawks 95-64 @ MCG
PF - Magpies def. Tigers 97-58 @ MCG

2019 - Started the season 1-2 after 3 rounds
R22 - Tigers def. Eagles 88-82 @ MCG
R23 - Tigers def. Lions 82-55 @ MCG
QF - Tigers def. Lions 112-65 @ Gabba
PF - Tigers def. Cats 85-66 @ MCG
GF - Tigers def. Giants 114-25 @ MCG

2020 - Started the season 1-1-2 after 4 rounds
R17 - Tigers def. Cats 57-31 @ Metricon Stadium
R18 - Tigers def. Crows 77-33 @ Adelaide Oval
QF - Lions def. Tigers 69-54 @ Gabba
SF - Tigers def. Saints 80-49 @ Metricon Stadium
PF - Tigers def. Power 46-40 @ Adelaide Oval
GF - Tigers def. Cats 81-50 @ Gabba

That's an unbelievable run of peaking in late August/September and you can see there were some slow starts along the journey. So maybe we have a very different conversation in a few weeks/months from now when it all starts to click and make sense. We can only hope!

Don't forget, that Dimma was almost fired, and it was only when Dimma got surrounded by new coaches Tigers blossomed. Those assistants are now head coaches or key cogs on other teams.

We will know in a week if we are serious. I expect crappy game with a lot of mistakes due to a new plan in typical humid and hot conditions with possible showers, but we better bring contest, pressure, work rate. If not, we are in trouble.

apart from the COVID-affected 2020 season, look at how little the tigers travelled end of year ... that really aided their late season runs

Well, that's another question altogether - do we have the assistant coaches necessary to succeed? We've added more Richmond flavour to the coaching group with guys like Grigg and Rance joining us this year and we've still got remanants of the Swans group with Malceski and Shaw. Will it be enough? I guess we'll see but early reports suggest that Grigg is a very good assistant coach and Rance is a pretty good leader around the club.

I know we've all got questions after seeing what the team dished up in those pre-season games but it would be wise to reserve in-depth judgement for now. In exactly a week from now we're going to know whether we have issues because four points will be on offer.

No doubt it helped that majority of those games were played at the MCG (12 MCG vs 8 interstate), but even in the games where they needed to travel they were very good - 2017 R22 - Tigers def. Dockers 155-51 @ Subiaco, 2019 QF - Tigers def. Lions 112-65 @ Gabba, 2020 R17 - Tigers def. Cats 57-31 @ Metricon Stadium, 2020 R18 - Tigers def. Crows 77-33 @ Adelaide Oval, 2020 QF - Lions def. Tigers 69-54 @ Gabba, 2020 SF - Tigers def. Saints 80-49 @ Metricon Stadium, 2020 PF - Tigers def. Power 46-40 @ Adelaide Oval and 2020 GF - Tigers def. Cats 81-50 @ Gabba.

They had one loss by 15 points in the eight games that they played outside of Melbourne during that final 6 weeks of the season period between 2017-20. Winning 7/8 interstate finals over a 4-year period is a dream run that any club would be ecstatic about and it really does show they timed their runs perfectly for the most part during those 4 seasons.
