What do you mean by competent defenders? At Melbourne? They have Whelan and Bartram as there best defenders. And don't get me started on Carroll.

Competent means GOOD. No Whelan and Carroll are not GOOD. If Garland was surrounded by GOOD defenders, he could completely shut down almost all key forwards. Richards is already surrounded by GOOD defenders and is still average.
