Opinion Swap Carlisle & Hurley

Of course Hird is going to get mentioned in this thread... those of us who understand that the quicker Jimmy comes back.. the quicker we will have Carlisle back in his rightful spot and earning an AA jumper.. rather than facing the very real prospect of VFL footy this weekend.

I just can't comprehend how many of you really think it is acceptable that one of our STAR young players, that looked a world beater last year... is going to go back to the VFL because our stubborn and pigheaded TEMPORARY coach wants the world to acknowledge his brilliance at the 'move of the century'.. just seriously don't get it.

Perhaps people have forgotten just how unbelievable this guy was last year..
Geez you have changed you're tune on Bomba, It wasn't long ago you were basically saying that rainbows shot out of his arse.

Pretty sure I never said rainbows shot out of his arse.

I do rate Bomber.. I think he was a good coach at Geelong and I think he offers a lot to our coaching panel.

I think he has made some terrible terrible decisions this year.. and the Carlisle debacle is the worst. Not being strong enough to say 'yep I made a mistake' is what got him into big trouble in 2006 and history is repeating.

As I've said, I didn't think there was a better man to lead us this year than Thompson but so far I have been left very very very very disappointed, especially by those on this board suggesting he should 'stay on' next year..

I rarely go to games, but went to the game on sat. Specifically kept an eye on Carlisle for most of the night and he had no impact on the game. Looked exhausted from half time. The difference between Daniher and Carlisle was stark. One just knows how to play attack - where to lead, when to lead - and the other has no clue. Daniher's impact could have been even greater if he hadn't been forced to carry the forward line by himself. He is going to be a star. In previous years I have kept an eye on Hurley. Carlisle made Hurley look like a natural forward. However, both are defenders. Carlisle even looked like he was manning his defender on numerous occasions. Makes it so easy to defend when that happens.

Have to say that if this game was an improvement for Carlisle, as Bomber said afterwards, then I am really concerned how bad he was in the previous games. We seriously were a man down. And with Dempsey playing in the midfield when not ready, that was actually two men down.

FWIW, Carlisle MUST have a good game against Brisbane.. perfect opportunity to recapture form.. they are shocking down back.

Surely if he fails again.. then the move gets made... surely.

Against Sydney he will be stuffed.

While it no doubt comes more naturally than some than others, knowing how, when and where to lead can definately be taught and learned....playing forward is absolutely a craft and the only things that would prevent Carlisle from learning it are (1) he's unwilling to do so or (2) he isn't given time to do so.

Can anyone really explain why, given time and effort, he couldn't replicate what he showed forward against Carlton and WCE last year (match winner in both games)? Or even what he produced in the first two rounds this year?

Surely this thread could be renamed Play Carlisle and Hurley down back".
For a long time a truck load of supporters were calling for the switch move, but I think we've now learnt they are both defenders.

I hope Thompson has learnt this too and puts them in their rightful positions once Bellchambers comes back to play forward with Ryder.

At the moment I will defend Thompson as any one with half a football brain can see that we are a tall forward short, and one too many talls down back.
Someone has to play there. Hurley had a go without much success.
If someone here has a better option, i'd like to here it!

square peg, round hole.

obvious that carlise will move back when flecther retires in 2017 so unless the backline becomes

fletcher hooker hurley
dempsey carlise hibberd

we are going to be looking at jake sulking around a bit longer.

How'd that turn out?

Brisbane will play Patfull on Carlisle. It will be a tough gig - The last 3 weeks were when Carlisle should have added dollars to his contract.

Backs (in no position in particular)
Carlisle Hooker Fletcher
Dempsey Hurley Hibberd
spare - Baguley, Pears.

With this circus, Thompson is ruining our opportunity at a top 4 spot plain and simple.

It's interesting, I heard from someone who knows someone that Alwyn Davey didn't like playing CHF, but at least he gave it his best bloody effort! Maybe Jakey should watch some vid of Alwyn's lead up work?

This.
But the problem is, the longer Hurley plays down back, the better forward everyone thinks he is, hence the continuation of this silly debate.

Grass is always greener...

At the end of the day, if we're looking after Michael physically, we shouldn't be playing him as a forward. Worse for his wrists.
