Just wanted to get a thread going on the Sydney Football League. I only just arrived in Sydney a couple of months ago. And just wanted to know what the word is about the standard of the competition.

I just moved up to Sydney myself from Melbourne and found a club called Southern Sharks. President and coach seem very experienced and cant wait for pre-season to start

Yeah I have only seen a little bit of Sydney footy I was about to join the Balmain Dockers very impressed by their new coach Damien Hall. The little bit I have seen on fox footy was was fairly impressive. I think the standard would be comparable to some pretty good leagues like Southern Div 1 maybe.

balmain is the worstest club ya could go too, got some really good blokes there, that just go out on a saturday and give the oppisition a game of footy... they serously lack talent every where all over the ground!!!
bowlzy should pull his finger out and play with a decent club and stop wasting his footy talent and give melbourne a go?

Moller didn't play at all last year after retiring but was listed at the start of this season to return. However, I believe he may have only played one or two games and disappeared off the radar.

Thought you'd give your paddock a mention in here, fantastic ground No 1,although you would prefer to use it more often i imagine. Any chance Kempy will run around again??I spoke with him before the Blues won the Semi v Bombers, said it was his last year, but after being pipped for the flag, the fire still may burn in him i reckon.

Scott Campbell makes his senior debut for Albury Tigers this weekend, cleared from Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs, anyone know anything about him?As a Tigers supporter, interested to know what to expect.

is playing in the Sydney Premier Division dangerous?

do lots of people get concussions?

I want to play but scared people might be rough.

any input would be much appreciated!

Q1- not any more or less dangerous than any other league, the lower divisions are more conducive to rough play, umpire scrutiny and skill level in Premier Division makes for clean fast footy

Q2- not as many as most leagues coz the footy is fast, therefore contact isnt as common. Lower grades see many concussions (also take into account hard surfaces)

Rough players or 'mercenaries' are in the 4 lower grades, although would be remiss of me to say there are no big hits in Prems. Where are you located? There is a club that covers just about every area in Metro sydney.

thanks pekay for all that!! really much appreciated...

wow..i just never knew that the lower graders would be more aggro or willing to 'all in' than first graders(prems) but since the firsts are definitely faster, i agree :)

no ManAtWork....I've already played several games of rep football so FYI, I'm not new to the game or anything. you're writing it as if i'm a newbie...yes..obviously you'll get hurt..but i just want to know the occurrence of head injuries/concussions as I've already suffered a big knock when I was young.

but thanks for the info pekay!

To be honest I can't see that playing in the lower divisions is much different, I haven't seen many incidents at any level of Sydney footy that would make you think it was any more unsafe to play than in other leagues.

Perhaps it's just the Jets Pekay ;)

Shotties-you must play 2nd Division,or haven't played lower grades for awhile, coz Troy Balzan n Mark Coles have their players on a tight leash in the senior teams at Parra and Moorebank. They have been known for it in the past, but have cleaned their games up in my opinion.
Desie-yes,its just us. I refer you to Students post on RWO re-bullying teams in 2nd Division!!!And we'll carry it on next year too!!
Loonytoon- to be honest, the only harsh stuff you see in Sydney footy is in the bottom grade (formerly known as 2nd Div) but you still see some pretty rough stuff in all grades, but the cleanest would have to be Prem Seniors. 1st Division as it was known, is known for its tough footy, closest to the old hard footy from dayd gone bye.Pretty to watch. If you want any more advice, feel free to contact me. As for you being ko'd in juniors, i copped plenty back then, dont let fear hold ya back!
