Do Melbourne have any distinct advantages over NSW and QLD based teams? Now, I’ll help you by letting you know that long held advantages are still considered advantages today.

Think hard before you reply. Much harder than you did before your last effort.

I’m excited about your findings.

I'm interested to hear what advantages Melbourne have been given over Sydney.

If it's solely to develop talent in NSW for the good of the code and the entire competition, why do 2 clubs have exclusive access (no other clubs can match bids) to the best talents in an entire state?
The AFL gave 2 reasons for this:
1. The clubs are the ones funding it
2. More importantly, the academies are competing against academies like this in league and soccer where the kid is tied to the club. It's seen as a reason for it's success. If a talented kid has to make a choice between codes the parent is more likely to pick the sport knowing where the kid will end up

Also worth reminding - this is not the AFLs first attempt at developing kids in NSW. Just prior the AFL introduced the NSW Scholarship program but most clubs were not picking players through it or were just picking kids from the Riverina.

Walker and Witts are 2 wins from that program but the sheer number of players picked up for the program amounted to very little return.

Yes before the academies not one player was drafted from NSW...except for duds like....James Hird.....Jarrad McVeigh.....Shane Crawford...Lenny Hayes...
Definitely need an academy lol

So in a hundred years you can only come up with 4 examples. 1 who was actually from ACT, which is not NSW.
Now do Vic or SA or WA.

Another top 4 finish propped up by yearly priority picks. The AFL can't afford the Swans out of the finals for more than a year at a time as they will bleed money and support so they'll continue giving them a leg up indefinitely.
Using your logic, the AFL is really pfhukcing up with their secret scheme for GWS and GC.

Reckon Sydney & GWS get advantage of Melbourne based players with huge profiles wanting to get out of the limelight.
We don't get that in Perth, nor does the Adelaide clubs.
Brizzy probably get an advantage here as well.
Just think if Freo had an academy, Jackson and Chad would be a tantalising combo

99% of AFL players are attention whores.

the grand final always being played at your own deck if you make it there (barring unforeseen circumstances) is a rather significant advantage i would say
"If you make it there" - that's the crux, the hard part is making it. Something that the Swans get a leg up with with their academy priority picks every single year.

Home ground advantage didn't seem to matter in 2020 and 2021. Perhaps it's just the better team with the better players and coaches who prevail once it gets to the pointy end rather than where the game is played 🤔

in the 2020 and 2021 grand final's neither team had a home ground advantage so im not sure what your point is there. i also explicitly put a caveat on those years in my post

it's disingenuous to say that the swans get a leg up with academy priority picks every year. how many of their best 22 come from the academy? they are a very well run team both on and off field similar to geelong and make the most of what they have. i would say the academies break about even with the inherent advantages that the more prominent melbourne clubs get in regards to go home free agents and trade, as well as being able to offer more post football opportunities generally

the only change i would make to academies is removing the points discount on matched bids

if you want to talk about clubs that are truly disadvantaged, the small victorian clubs that dont generally draw free agents would be where i would start (north, footscray and st kilda)

Yep they are. They stuffed up their initial setup and are dealing with the legacy of that. Even so GWS competed for flags for a few years.
Weird then that they slapped that trade ban on us for doing too well.

So do they want all the northern clubs to win flags equally, or do they want some northern clubs to win more flags than others, or did they want some northern clubs to win more flags than others but now they've decided they'd prefer other northern clubs to win, or do they want a judicious mix of northern clubs and clubs in traditional Aussie Rules states winning flags in specified years, or do they want...

As I have stated several times in this thread, there are literally dozens of structural inequalities in the AFL. There are a number of equalisation measures in place, and the northern academies are one, but if you really feel strongly about the many inequalities, there are plenty of other measures that could be considered. We could do away with the fixture, and all marquee matches for starters. We could move the grand final every year.

But no, there are always such good reasons why we can't do any of those (and some of them are valid.)

So let's just put about the notion that the Swans are the AFL's favourite child.

You are either obtuse or disingenuous if you think the entire matter is that the Swans got "given" three players and that's all folks! Not really interested in continuing this dull discussion. Bye.

Given that its true I'd suggest you just thank the AFL for the leg up.
