That is a very legitimate problem. Should the GWS academy expand further and take over more of the Swans academy, so they can get more NSW talent? The Swan don't have the same issues with want away players, at least nowhere near to that extent.
Whilst retention hasn't been a problem with the swans so far, attracting talent is becoming an issue. I'd also guess the club is paying players very close to the top rate just to get them to stay

We don't have the same issues right now but you can bet if we were a bottom 4 team for 3 or 4 years those issues would very quickly come up with new recruits.

Do we not?

Bingo. It's why all our competitors have signed talent to push on for a flag next year and we've been using our cap just getting players to sign on again. Papley isn't staying out of the kindness of his heart, we'll have given him a great offer. Contrast with Geelong able to pay unders because players are near home and get to kick back on the farm every other day.

Living away from home is a premium tax Vic players apply to themselves at the northern team

I still don't understand, after 100+ pages of this discussion, why it is only the Swans academy which apparently is the problem.

I mean, if having an academy is such a huge advantage, where is the focus on the other clubs which have one?

You had some pretty big burdens on the salary cap, to be fair. Not a lot of wiggle room.

Did we? Managed to sign Heeney, Mills and Parker to big deals.

No - Cameron would be the only one close to 900k, and once you hit 30 you take a pay cut, doesn't matter who you are.

We didn't bring anyone big in for this year anyway. We probably had to give a Christmas bonus to meet the cap obligations.

You brought in Bowes who was a salary dump.. LOL.

Ummm, do you understand why that might limit your ability to recruit free agents?

Umm do you understand that those are examples of big deals we were able to sign despite you claiming we couldn't? Heeney and Mills deals were this year.

Meaning we don't have cap pressure. I don't think you understand my argument.

Your argument was you didn't spend big on any recruits this year. I don't think you know what you're trying to argue.

Ok, I think you are drunk. Bowes doesn't come out of this year's cap.

Same goes with your other reply. Buddy, Heeney, Parker on big contracts from 2016 - 2021, Mills from 2017-2022. You haven't been able to attract any big recruits in that time, right?

But it's got nothing to do with cap burden. You're a genius mate.

Geelong has managed to keep your big names and also bring in a lot more as well, something Sydney can't do as for us it costs more to convince these players to stay.

I agree. That's why I mentioned the loss of COLA. I actually don't have a problem with it, having lived in Sydney myself for a decade. I didn't think it should have been removed in the first place and think they should bring it back.

Where on Earth did I say he did? You said you didn't bring in any big hitters this year - i.e. this year's trade period, i.e. the one that just finished. You were seemingly using this as evidence that you have no big hitters that would fill your cap.

You really need to upskill your comprehension or this conversation is going absolutely nowhere.

It's interesting how the buddy deal handcuffed us, yet having dusty owed 2.6 million for the next two years didn't affect the tigers bringing in 2 players on 750k+

It's also interesting that we were looking to bring Ryder in and had a way to work it under the cap but were told "You can't have everyone" but Geelong have just brought in Bruhn, Henry and Bowes.

Between grooming kids to bomb interstate draft interviews

- exploiting the good will and incredible generosity of Victorian born players to play for peanuts and put more emphasis in playing for the pride of the jumper rather than selfish monetary gain like players from every other state

-60-70% of the entire draft pool coming from one locale

-playing away games in your own city and often the same venue as your home ground

-home grand final regardless of opposition or ladder position

- constant pillaging of expansion teams

I'm not sure how they operate in these ridiculous and criminally unfair conditions.

But let's take away the one tool that gives northern teams a fighting chance and if your lucky produce 1 first round calibre player every 5 years
