I was actually advocating for Rowbottom to be "turfed out" (that makes it sound so harsh!)

I don't believe anyone whose legs seemingly give out from under him every time he's involved in play should be playing.

As you know I am a big fan of his but his game against the Blues was pretty sad to watch unfold.

In a game where the midfield is already going to be undergoing serious changes, I think it just makes sense to take this opportunity to explore other options.

Give Rowbottom a few weeks off, give a few kids a chance they're unlikely to get again for some time, and then normal programming will resume in the mids in a few weeks.

Didn't really notice that, but I was watching it on a phone on a bus. I thought he was immense against Freo in particular, and played a big defensive game last weekend. He got absolutely set up by teammates a few times where he should never have received the ball.

Unless there is an actual issue, I'd be fine with bringing someone in for the defensive role to free him up (though I suspect it'd be Clarke), but with no Parker and Mills I don't know why having the bye weekend off, followed up by 2 x 8 day breaks, isn't enough for a quick refresh.

Of course if people have given up on the year, then playing guys with any issues, rather than giving opportunity to others, doesn't make sense. I haven't given up though.

We're already losing on experience and cohesion in the mids with Parker likely missing. It wouldn't make sense to drop rowbottom when his experience will be more crucial this week. I expect to see heeney and papley feature more in the mids with Parker missing. Possibly gulden too.

Outs: Parker, mcandrew
Ins: Rampe, Stephens

Hopefully they play Campbell further up the ground, even at hf at times to compensate whenever papley/heeney feature in the mids. With rampe in the backline we can afford to play Campbell upfield at times.

I agree, Rowbottom has been struggling as of late and needs a circuit breaker. I think he gets another run v Saints though because of Parker’s suspension (as ridiculous copping a week off as I have ever seen, still shaking my head). In addition, he is one of Horses fav’s and as such, similar to NSW batsmen in Aussie Cricket team, needs to do more than most to get dropped!!

Rowy and Warner have been the two constants out of the mids. Heeney to play more minutes, which I am looking forward to. Would be better maybe for Rowy to play the Parker role, which seems to be attack the ball and win it instructions, rather than the pure defensive role Rowy has been playing.

And agree more minutes for Stephens inside to see what he can do, would make more sense, however I reckon they will throw Gulden back in on high rotation.

The extent to which Rowbottom is tasked with playing a purely defensive role and not to get the football is overstated considerably on this board. He's just not great at winning the ball. He's decent on the inside at it, but is still young and has a way to go there but on the outside he doesn't really know how to get to space and provide an option.

He played well last year and back in 2020 when first given midfield time, due to many injuries.

Therefore he is capable.

He is a tackling machine and selfless hence why the coaches love him and why he gets respect from supporters. We can only judge with a discerning eye on what the coaches instructions are, but if he is in purely to get the footy he should have been dropped long ago.

That's not true. As mentioned above, the back end of last year he was everywhere, in everything. It was the same in 2020, and also round 1 of 2021 before he did his knee. Clearly he's capable. Perhaps the reason his role is such a source of frustration is because it makes everyone rather forgetful as to how good he actually can be, and then when he's shifted into a more attacking role where he can find more of the ball, everyone jumps back on the bandwagon.

You can deny his role all you like but it's clear as day what the coaches want from him. He was 8th in the best and fairest last year up to round 18, when he was averaging just under 16 disposals a game. Ahead of perennial coaches favourite Jake Lloyd; ahead of a bloke who kicked over 50 goals last year in Buddy; ahead of guys like Blakey and Paddy who were discussed as All Australian contenders throughout the season. Why would Rowbottom have faired so favourably in the eyes of the coaches if he was an inside mid only getting 16 touches a game, being poor at getting into space or winning the ball? Probably because he was doing exactly what was asked of him...

Is Hickey a certain starter? Already missed with concussion this year, cerra's safe tackle may make the club take a cautious approach

Hickey follow ups is what made him so crucial and important to us in 2021.

Unfortunately without his second efforts on the ball he doesn't offer anything.

Its really annoying our ruck situation does my head in giving our rivals perfectly good ruckman past seasons and keeping injury prone battlers.
