System for Evaluating Value of Players

Hi all,

I'm interested in creating a statistically-based system for allocating all players in the AFL a "value" number to indicate how good they really are.

This number could be used to evaluate hypothetical trades.

It would also be interesting to consider giving future draftees a value.

What are your major gripes?

I severely doubt anyone would be able to come up with anything better than the Player Ratings, even if it does have some limitations.

The main thing player ratings needs added for trade value is a discount mechanism for player age. I.e. two players rated the same by player ratings, if one is 2 years younger then for trade purposes they should weight higher. That and it won't accurately rate newer players to their true value, as they haven't reached potential.
