It's all about choice now people :)

It's no longer Microsoft rules the world!!

As it stands..Apple holds the social market...(Awesome brainwashing is such a magical thing!!!!)

Google (Android) will take hold and overtake the balance (figures from China and the US suggest this trend)...

Microsoft holds majority of server client setups...

Then we can have a happy medium in the OS world:):)

thrive comes with an full sized SD card slot for up to 32gb expansion when/if you need it. it might even be and SDXC slot for even more expansion.

I just got the toshiba thrive yesterday for fathers day. Very happy with it. To me an iPad is a bit like an oversized iPod which I already have. I have used myfriends iPad 2 and I would take the thrive any day of the week. Android took a bit to get used to, but it's way more open than apple.

The pros for me.

Full size hdmi port, just plug it in to your tv.
Java (redtube :) )
Full size USB port (thumb drive portable hard drive)
Full size sd slot. I know its only a 16gb tablet. They make 128gb sd cards now.
Torrents. Can download torrents on it games movies etc
Can play just about any media file including h.264
Battery life is supposed to be eleven hours with normal use. So far that sounds about right.
Removable battery.
Love the rubber backing. Is interchangeable for different colours.

Cons
In the sun you can get a bit of glare.
No 3G (although that one doesn't bother me)

If it does everything you want it to do, better than the competition can/does; then who careS?

But it doesn't. It limits you to mp4 files. It has no java. Unless you jailbreak you are limited to what ever is on the app store.

Don't get me wrong, I have owned an iPod 3 and iPod 4 and played with an iPad 2 and they are very good operating systems but way to restrictive.

To most users they are good because they are simple and effective. To the more technical minded it just doesn't cut the cake.

I was going to buy a tablet but after careful deliberation, I decided to redirect that money towards a nice lift kit and a new set of treads for the 4x4.......Money MUCH better spent :D

Then your a smart man I tried for ages.

I can too... It wasn't hard.

And you can get Apps to play flash websites (although I hate flash websites, so it doesn't bother me too much).

And more technical minded people can jailbreak if they want.

To the more technical minded it just doesn't cut the cake.

I'm not sure if that makes me one of those people or not :p

There is a reason that Apple is dominated the tablet market; and it's not because they're pretty.

Its because they're easy to use and simple and your not cool now days unless you own an iPhone. (Amazing how some cleve marketing can make the majority of people think a crap product is the best, eg Bose speakers) To bad that the richest company in america gets its products made in china by minimum wage workers and even child labour but that's another story.

The thing that annoys me about apple is how much of a stranglehold they try to have over there products. App store or nothing. Any app made has to get apples approval. No pr0n. No torrents. Mp4 is the only video file to have. (OK so you can play a VI on it, is it possible now to copy avithru your iTunes? Battery playig up? Sorry your gonna have to bring that to us to fix, its only $200.

Sure they're great products for the masses.

It's partly because they're simple.

It's partly becaue they're cool.

It's partly becaues they are a closed environment, which is more of a positive for most people.

I don't mean to be rude, but If you learnt what they could do a bit more effectively (ie, play different file formats on them), maybe you'd be better placed to tell us what they can and can't do?

Why use them for torrent downloads? I do that on my laptop/desktop or I log into my NAS and load it from there. Not hard...

Battery playing up under warranty? Apple's warranty program is excellent (and even when they're out of warranty - break your IPhone? ~$250 for a replacement one, regardless of what you've done to it); and if it's out of warranty, get it repaired by a third party.

Apple does have a 'cult' feel about it, but, the reality is, their products are generally market leaders for good reasons.

It's entirely because they're "cool." I think it's very hard to disagree with the fact that the majority of people that purchase an iPad purchase it because their mate has one and they don't want to bother looking at alternatives. It's marketed brilliantly, and Apple are geniuses at it. Kudos to them

I challenge you to stand outside a JB Hi-Fi for a day and ask every person that walks out with an iPad why they bought it... 95% of them will shrug their shoulders

My mate was told by quite a few stores that the HP Touchpads had been exhausted in Australia and no more were being shipped.

This article suggest they may still be able to squeeze out a few more...
Harvey Norman will not be getting any more touchpads. Keep an eye out for accessories that may be arriving at stores, but thats the best you'll get unfortunately :(

Ive had the acer a500 16gb model for around 2 months now and it is pretty good.... Android is better than ios personally coz u can customise it more and it acts similarly to laptop/pc functionality...

I chose the acer as it had the same specs as all the other android models but it has a hdmi port, mini usb port, mini sd card slot and most importantly a full size host usb slot so u can chuck a usb key into it and even keyboards etc...

They are sellin at officeworks for under $400 now which to me is a bargain...

I don't get how a closed environment is good. Imagine Microsoft releases windows 8 and says we now have a Microsoft online store. The only way to get programs for yournpc will be through the microsoft store. Any programs that are made by developers will have to be verified and ticked of by microsoft and microsoft will take there 30% cut.lets do away with windows explorer, we don't want you to see what's on or organise your hard drive. Hownis that good?

I pads and I pads aren't a bad thing, but there is plenty better out there for cheaper, its just good marketing. And i think iTunes is really badly designed.

As it is if you where to go away for a few weeks just an I pad wouldn't be sufficient. Torrents would come in handy then. So would a USB slot and a fullsize sd card for your camera. Not gonna happen with apple because that would allow access to the file system.
How good is it on the I pad to sync word docs to your PC? Any good for business?

Same with hdmi out, i doubt apple will put a hdmi port on the I pad 3 because that way they can't slug you$45 for an adaptor cable, to bad about the inconvenience of having to carry it everywhere, where as everyone has hdmi cables.

To me an I pad is more of a gaming/facebook machine than anything else.

Yes, more HP TouchPads will be released to the US market. If anyone here wants one, they will need to ship it over, possibly using a forwarding company.

why do i need to get off the couch to start downloading a torrent? Has IOS managed wireless transfers to / from the PC yet? Can you put any music you like on there?

LOL @ hating flash websites because you are told to.

BTW the Motorola Xoom is selling @ CostCo for $599.

Use your laptop - stay on the couch.

Log into your NAS via a web browser?

Wireless transfers in the next iOS.

Yes, can put any music you like on there - what is it with you people who are clueless bagging things for simple 'failings,' - which actually aren't?

Yea, I hate them because I was told too, not because they're a pain in the arse.

I don't get how a closed environment is good.

Because most people either don't know what they're doing, or don't care.

I've been using computers since the early 90s (Amstrad 286), I've built/upgraded shitloads of them and 'fixed' a ton of them for family and friends. The things that used to appeal to me about computers (ie, I could upgrade the video card whenever a new game came out) have no become a pain in the arse. I don't want that crap, I don't want to have to worry about anti-virus or malware, I want something that just does what it's supposed to do, without screwing around.

I manage our IT Systems at work (not my primary role); around 20 computers; the amount of time I spend on stupid problems as a result of people not knowing what they're doing (or, worse, those that know enough to cause real problems) is crazy.

We're currently in the process of developing Apps for IPads and deploying them to staff; I don't need to worry about file structures or formats or people deleting things or installing things or doing shit they aren't supposed to.

I've got no doubt that the Xoom or the Transformer or the new Sony Tablets are good pieces of kit, just sick of morans whose reasons for hating the IPad boil down to 'because they're popular.'

Mynfirst PC was an amstrad as well, then went to an xt(like a 186) then 286, 486 then an amd 686.

I don't hate Ithings because they're popular, in fact I don't hate them at all. I think they are quite well designed and appeal to the masses. I hate. Apples business models though, and I also hate the fact that everyone thinks they're the best things out. In reality an I pad is a touchpad for dummies.
