Re: Kennelly open to a return

sigh im undecided on this one. for sentimental value - yes. for not sentimental/talent value - no.

when he left his body was shot, and i kno he has played Gaelic and stayed fit but it is not as physical as AFL but i guess he knows his body the best.

+Mattner

Re: Kennelly open to a return

He went back to Ireland before his body was completely shot, he probably isn't up to playing at the AFL level again. One of my favourite players but I hope he retires. We replaced him with Shaw and we have Malceski and Mattner to play off the HBF as well.

Re: Kennelly open to a return

when a player retires, they should stay retired

a comeback rarely does the player's image any good, leave the game with some respect

ps. don't want him back, doubt his body is up to senior AFL level any more

Re: Kennelly open to a return

if his body was to be right and if he was still up to the rigors of AFL, as some have suggested he may not be, then bring it on I say. Love to see him back, however there would be nothing sadder than to see him hobbling around, belting his shoulder back into its socket every game, trying to run off half back as we all know he could, and getting caught on a regular basis because he has lost that 5% edge that you need to cut it at this level.

Re: Kennelly open to a return

Give him a crack if he thinks he can do it, those that say theirs no room for sentiment in footy just dont appreciate our great game for what it really is..

He won't be able to play out the matches as he did last year!

Leo barry won't be there to put it back in place for him..........he WAS an expert at it afterall!

Re: Kennelly open to a return

He was our main kick in man. We've lacked in that area without him & with Malceski out of form.
I'll have him but only if he hurries up & makes up his mind ASAP!!

Re: Kennelly open to a return

actually just after reading the statement where the rumours are coming from, and its from his book which is due to be released shortly, so its hard to know how much truth is in it. He's looking more and more foolish as it drags on. He came out and said he premeditated a hit in the first couple of seconds of the All Ireland final, and now he has these revelations. The book is being based for an australian market, so he could be trying to pander to that for better sales. Lots of autobigraphies have 'sensationalist' headline aspects to garner interest, and I think the 2 excerpts so far definitely fit that profile.

As much as I think Tadhg is a great player and a great man, I am losing more and more respect for him as time goes on. Bringing out this book is a stupid idea too when he is still an active player, whether he plays in Sydney or Kerry.

Re: Kennelly open to a return

"Excerpts from the closing paragraphs of Tadhg Kennelly - Unfinished Business
I got the chance to catch up with Jack O'Connor(in the days after AI Final & he actually brought up my early substitution.'Look I have to say I watched the game & we actually took you off way to early,'the manager said.
I just laughed & told him it was irrelevant because the main thing was we'd won & I was now an All Ireland Medallist. That was all that mattered to me.However, all that seemed to matter to the press was my future,as speculation I would go back to the AFL intensified on both sides of the globe.
In the end I thought the best thing to do was give the Irish media what they wanted,so I described how my heart was with Kerry& how I felt I hadn't yet become all I could as a Gaelic footballer. All of this is true, but the reality was I didn't know what I was going to do.There were so many factors to consider. My family,my life with Nicole,my financial future,my sense of unfinished business in Australia.
I'd been living a fairy tale for the past 8 months. To come back in my first year & be part of an All Ireland winning team was extraordinary....AS i reflected, one nagging thought kept coming back to me about my fairy tale.
Was there more to come?"

Re: Kennelly open to a return

After speaking to a Irish friend tonight who follows the game in his homeland closely, i would think Tige is coming back as he has burnt a few people over there with his admission that he targeted a player early in their GF.
I would welcome him back with open arms and a smaller pay cheque as he is coming back on our terms and anyone who doesn't want him knows nothing about footy.
Kennelly or Bevan- there's one, 12 off the list i don't think tige would have a problem getting a game.

Re: Kennelly open to a return

I'd be a bit lukewarm about this - he really wasn't very good towards the end and I can't imagine him being any better at this stage of the game. Great player and always added some x-factor that we really needed, but I don't know.....

He's not the first to do it, hell he's not the first to do it this month, his book will clash with another player, a Cork player, really interesting lad he is.

But I've lot complete respect for Kennelly, he was one of the Kerry players that I didn't mind as much as I hated the others, probably because he hasn't been around on the scene as long as the other Kerry players. But after the big revelation that he intentionally went out to target one of our players in the game was disgracefully, it was a complete pathetic act, a real thug like act, and I wouldn't have picked him for it either.

He's completley changed my view of him, he's now nothing more then a cheating thug. Intentionally targeted a player in the final. Disgraceful act. Should have gotten sent off for it, it should have been a straight red, but he didn't even get a yellow card, typical ref bottled the big decision.

He really has changed my oppinion of him.
His popularity has pretty much spiraled down, I suppose that can happen when an active player brings out a biography, but then again the player I was mentioning earlier, who is probably one of the most hated players in the country, his popularity has actually gone up since. It can go either way for you I suppose.

But I've really lost respect for him after that, what he did was dangerous on a good day, but reading that it was planned..

In one way I'd love if the thug got on a plane and we never saw him again in Ireland. But on the other hand, I'd love if we got to play against him just one last time..unfinished business and all.

This is part of the book where he talks about the incident..

Now Kennelly, in his autobiography, titled 'Unfinished Business', admits that the high and dangerous challenge on the unsuspecting Murphy was planned before the throw-in.

In excerpts quoted in today's Sunday Independent, the former Sydney Swan Australian Rules player reveals: 'My theory was that I really wanted to set the tone for our side. We wanted Cork to know that we were a totally different animal to the one they'd faced three months earlier.

'As we got to our positions, I looked across at (Paul) Galvin (another thug), who nodded, and then positioned myself on the line ready to race in when the referee put the ball in the air. My eyes were almost rolling around in the back of my head. I was like a raging bull.'

He says he 'timed it right' and caught Murphy 'perfectly on the chin'.

According to Kenneally, his message was: 'Cop that. It's different this time, boys.'

Referee Marty Duffy awarded a free to Cork at the time and the Central Competition Controls Committee (CCCC) examined footage of the incident after the final and decided not to ask Duffy to review his decision.

Re: Kennelly open to a return

If his body is right we need him - its not like we will be overflowing with experienced players next year. An old head like Kennelly would do wonders for the younger guys.

Re: Kennelly open to a return

rebelcounty, I know there is probably more hatred for Kennelly because of his location to you and the rivalry it brings, but there are 2 aspects of that quote from the indo that are important. firstly, they leave out the next sentance where Kennelly said he didnt intend to injure the player, and secondly, Duffy did review the incident and left it be.

Kennelly is not the first, nor will he be the last, to go out and get the retaliation hit in first. It happens countless times in every game, that a player goes in hard for the first ball to make a statement. But Kennelly is probably the first to admit, and even more stupidly, write about it in a book. It was obvious from the action on the day his intention was to go in hard and lay down a marker, and like I said, it happens a lot, doesnt make it right, but its part of the game. What I dont like about his actions where to be boasting about it.

Re: Kennelly open to a return

Haha, I love it how you always say that to support your argument.
I don't always say that but Kennelly would be better than an untried recruit who will sit in the pathetic ressies comp for a couple of years. We also need experienced players after our retirements, so we have nothing to lose.
