I think players love to take short cuts its human nature however when a lot of players do it it looks really bad (Melbourne, Bulldogs at times). Sydney is the teams to aspire to. Not there game plan but the mental strength and discipline. In the Army we have discipline because it is handed out with iron rule. This still won't get the best performance out of army guys though. You know what the army does to ensure the best team and individual performance. ONE EXAMPLE: If your doing a route march of say 12 Klm's and people start falling behind not keeping up. They turn the main group around march them back past the foot draggers turn the main group around again so the foot draggers are in front. How do you think the foot draggers then feel.

1. They feel like there letting there fellow soldiers down.
2. The other soldiers resent those that are making them do more and let them know it.
3. Because there performance effects the whole group the fitter ones help encourage the foot draggers by word and physically pushing them.

This ensures the group gets to there destination as one and are not spread out over a Kilo-meter. As you know a platoon spread out over this distance is no fighting machine.

Roos does this by getting all the players together and they not Roo's points out the faults of other players. The senior players take the role of coach when they do video analysis and the senior players point out where the individuals stuffed up. Roo's even got the boys to pick the team the other week which is why couch got dropped for one game.

This changes the mind set of individuals from letting down the man (coach) to letting down your piers (team). Every one is taught from an early age to stick to the Man. Senior players take on the mentor role and are more likely to set a good example for the others both on and of the field. When players are given credit by there piers later for picking up there faults this gives them a great lift to do more.

Cheers Lindsay

My biased view agrees with you Lindsay. A talented side with a good game plan but they lift themselves above the pack with a great team culture.

Kudos to North for taking the hard road - instead of simply hiring a Sydney assistant coach or ex-player they've instilled very similar team culture practices and they are living them on the paddock. Look a massively better side as a result (tho a better game plan than 2006 doesn't hurt either).

North is one team that has always had this culture. One wonders what John Longmire brought to the Swan? North did lose it for a while however with players like Archer still there its no wonder they got it back. A little adversity always helps.

They've always had the shinboner spirit - but what did that stand for besides a "never say die" attitude? Now, the players have taken ownership of what it means and are playing with exactly the same accountability and discipline that the Swans have (when they put their mind to it!). And you're right - a little bit of "us vs them" doesn't hurt.

I think there is something to be said about the way they let new draftees into the game. They don't just throw them in - but give them a few years to develop, build up strength and confidence playing adults. Look at Malceski - he started a few games in 2005, played all of 2006 and now is gun ready made player.
