Yeah as a just in case someone wants to give up a late pick?

I would guess it is just people management. They want to know before going on holidays or whether to be keeping fit / rehab etc.
Oh no tell them absolutely, but why announce it publicly?

Why wait? Players have their exit interviews pretty quickly after the season is done. Announcing it saves the leaks and everyone can move on, rather than speculation and guesswork based on social media posts and other nonsense.
4 years ago and earlier we announced them after trade period, there weren't leaks then, why would there be now? All it does is broadcast that clubs that were interested can get them DFA rather than actually approaching us for a trade, not that I think those two would net anything.
Because it leaks.
It doesn't usually actually.

Bit of a chicken or the egg. It doesn't leak because it's usually announced straight away.

If we want to delist them anyway why go through the bother of getting a pick in round 8 for them? If there's any trade value in them at all then we tell them to explore their options, and that is announced instead.

Need a mature aged bigger bodied midfielder that can play a heavy tag role similar to Clarke and run both ways. Any chance that we could get Jacob Townsend?
Clarke runs both ways. See Port game :p

I'd love a Pendles type. Big, athletic, good in traffic and with ball in hand and an accumulator.
TBH, i'd take Pendles himself for a few years.

Once Fanta and JD leave, we will be further away from a premiership than the Gold Coast.
How can a club lure 4 gun recruits then fall off the side of the cliff with foundation players wanting out..
Sack everyone, start again - Essendon is completely ****ed and will be for the next 10 years.
What a club....

So effectively if one player leaves it's time for a rebuild...just so Essendon to have a 'game plan' reliant on a dominant tall. There's no way Cameron was saving GWS in the GF because they were smashed by Richmond's runners - yet here we are.

If we had any sort of system we were working towards we wouldn't bat an eye here and just keep building. Instead we will excuse a shit season, fire sale on Fantasia (who we are most likely shopping because plan A is over - Joe) and be another 5 years in the wilderness.

Given our recruitment drive for the past few seasons, an effective club would lose Joe add Jenkins and make top 4 in 2020.

I agree with the sentiments but I'd get there slighty differently.

I dont think the game plan is necessarily dependent on Daniher and Fantasia. Actually, I'm not even clear on what our game plan is. So far Rutten's defence has seen us as even less of a forward 50 defensive side than we were last year.

We're basically playing the game from half back so it's hardly surprising that some of the defensive numbers look good.

Combining that with a score is the problem and that's where gun forwards come in to the equation.

We need Daniher and Fantasia playing their best footy next year to stay a top 8 side, and improve, with the midfield we have and playing the brand of our exposed form.

The competition is going to get better next year and we're just about to lose our competitive advantage.

Bottom 4 is not out of the question if we're playing this year's side.

We'll never do it but if Joe and Raz are gone I'd give Hooker, Hurley and Zaharakis the option of a new home.

Not so much because they have significant value but a raid on the second round of the draft would be my plan and we're basically rebuilding anyway.

Rutten and Caracella are going to have to pull a rabbit out.

This went through to the keeper.

Delayed onset Saga soreness perhaps?

Was actually thinking today that we have been extremely lucky to have not lost any (big) players through the saga or even Free Agency. Catching up with us now it seems

Agreed. And this is an entire subject on its own so I’ll keep it brief, but I think the senior players of the club are still carrying a baggage from it and also a sense of entitlement. I’m more excited by our youngsters taking over once heppell and co are gone.

The Francis signing was so interesting to me. In his interview he stated how it was Draper, redman and the like that got him to feel apart of the club. That’s an indictment on the leadership group.

So yeah further to your point I think the saga is affecting us in ways that aren’t as obvious as the dodged player exodus.
