These are the players I feel pretty confident would be in our team if it becomes genuinely good within the next couple of seasons.

Redman [KPD1] Ridley
Hind [KPD2] McGrath
Durham [MID] Langford
Martin [CHF] Stringer
[FP1] Wright [FP2]
Draper [MID2] Merrett
Caldwell Hobbs Perkins [???]

*There are so many kpds on the list that we should already have the ones we need, it's just a matter of who and how long they take. Laverde may very well be a kpd, Zerk may keep playing like he has for the last couple of months.
*Shiel and Parish are both good players. They might be there if we become a top four side. But the midfield balance has been out of whack forever and needs to be addressed. Maybe we find a midfielder or two who solve that, while also keeping them together.

But they are also two of the most tradeable assets. I doubt we will actually move either, and we certainly wouldn't trade both. But if we could turn Parish into Dunkley it would be worth considering at the least.

Ham, Hurley, Heppell, Francis, Cutler, gone. Hopefully Smith retires (unlikely). Stewart should be given a year for break glass. Guelfi deserves another contract. I’ll let others judge Eyre and Brand.

Sweep the list and throw money at Taranto, Dunkley and an elite key forward.

They set a standard for that team first pressure type player (or they do when fit 👀) and if you want to play in the seniors you have to do all that and more I guess. Although I’m not sure who they’re really holding out of the side bar Ham and a couple of mid-season draftees anyway.

Ideally Snelling and Guelfi are your 21st and 22nd players selected type guys. One's that you know will do the ugly team stuff, work hard, and compete all game, forcing other guys to produce their best or be pushed out of the side. Having them be a walk-up start each week shows how thin our depth is.

I'm a big fan of guys like Snelling and Guelfi who just work, and work, and work all game, but if you combined their work ethic with some more class around goal then we'd have a lot more opportunities for scores.

Snelling and Guelfi strike me as placeholders until we get some players in with a bit more class while retaining the hard nut attitude.
You don’t need players with class in that role, lambert is the goat of the role and hardly has class was just an honest coachable player. You really don’t want say a Perkins type playing that role, they are better used somewhere else. To play that role have moreorless have to be willing to sacrifice your game every week (not every player wants to do that), be highly disciplined, be able to pressure and tackle and have an extremely high aerobic base. Not everyone is suited to that.

We must be going hard for one of Dunkley, Hopper or (and my preference) Taranto behind closed doors. Surely. They are litterally the players we have been screaming for over the last 10 years and now there is 3 of them potentially obtainable.
Gosh did we blink with Hewett and Brodie.

Going forward we will have to revamp the forward line.
Wright has his spot. Jones / Baldwin / Stewart hold a spot.
Resting ruck probably gets a spot.
Need two genuine small forwards with speed which we do not have.
One spot for a medium forward.
Do not think we can be a good side with Stringer / Langford / Snelling / Guelfi all in the same forward line.
we had the makings of an elite fwd line coming into 2018.
Stringer Daniher Tippa
Fantasia Hooker Smith

Shame we've added a quality FF in Wright but really struggle with the rest of the pieces.

your post got less and less confident each sentence :p

so hard to read what our play on mids is.
Start of the year we clearly thought we had a deep midfield. That lasted 10m.

I think we need to work ourselves out. And really don't have the time to do so. Dunkley is available now. As is Taranto. Though I think we get pipped on both. Hopper might be one we hold our powder dry for for a year unless we can get a trade that isn't too expensive done now.

What we can roll out now and the near future isn't bad
Draper/Bryan Shiel/Hobbs Parish/Perkins
Martin/Langford Merrett/Caldwell Heppell/Durham

Throw Stringer in as an option too. And a top 6 pick.

I think we need to shake it up, and it may require selling a Parish or Merrett to do so. Two players I really like, but I don't think we can carry Shiel and Parish in the same side or run a core starting 3 of Shiel, Merrett and Parish.

Caldwell and Hobbs give me a lot of hope we have some strong kids coming through. Very keen to see what Perkins can bring and would love to add Cam McKenzie as a bigger, hard defensive running unit to compliment.
Durham and Martin bring nice complimentary qualities as well. Been very impressed with Durham.

If we don't go hard at the "gun" mids, I do hope we're in the ear of some decent kids like Bytel, RCD, O'Halloran & Robertson.

How is it possible that we are about to get significantly younger yet again?

Smith gone, AMT gone, Heppell and Hurley, maybe one of them is here next year.

We’ll have the least experienced list in the AFL next year at this rate and people are going to be out for miracles.

Pinning this for this time next year when people want Rutten’s head.

If all of Walla, Smith, Heppell and Hurley go, along with Cutler unlikely to get another contract, that takes out over 800 games of experience from the club. We'll have no 200 gamers coming into the year, three 150+ gamers in Shiel, Merrett and Stringer, and only 5 more 100-149 game players.

Also means we'll only have 7 players aged 27 or older.

The Demons flag team last year was the exact same age as we were last week. The question isn't age, it's are we better with those senior players or without them.

I don't expect us to contend next year but we will improve on this season by virtue of structure. Jones, Cox, Reid, Bryan start heading into those years where young talls have a step up in performance.

Months in it and a total of about 500 games of cumulative experience but even if you call it a wash, we have been trying to build a mature core of players for like 6 years and it just refuses to happen, one reset after another after another.

Depending on certain moves we may have 3 150 gamers on the list next year while Geelong are trotting out sides where the average experience is nudging 150.

When comparing us, at least use someone comparable not the competitions benchmark.

You’re better than that Zacy boy

Worth noting the only relative to this metric as is Dyson who has played significant football this year.

Devon (8 games), Hurley (0), Tippa (0) Cutler (9 most as sub)

So whilst many can complain about average ages etc. how impacted are we really? Not nearly as much as many want.

This isn’t comparisons, because there is absolutely no comparison, we’ve cycled through probably 4 core groups while Geelong have not only kept the same but kept the same and continued to add.

I’m not asking a question I know the answer to either, I just cannot fathom why we cannot get a group together for a consistent period of time.

We haven't had a group consistently good enough to keep around for that long

There are countless examples of cores that didn’t even come close to winning anything hanging around for a long time, so I wouldn’t have thought it’s a ‘good enough’ thing.

The whole thing is a revolving door

out of contract still are;-

Heppell, Stewart, Menzie, Baldwin, Hurley, Francis, Ham, Brand, Eyre, McBride & Hird

I think we will keep the 1st four off that list - the rest Im not sure...
I'd be surprised if Brand, Eyre and McBride got cut. You're also missing Waterman, Guelfi and Cutler.

I am guessing Waterman, Guelfi & Cutler will all get signed - reckon 1 or 2 of Brand, Eyre and/or McBride will get cut.
Heppell must be seriously considering the GCoast offer also...!!
Guelfi yes. The other two no.

You don't draft two athletic KPP's, give them a 2 year contract, see them build nicely in the VFL, only to cut them when they're 20. McBride the same except for the fact he's been here 3 years. Only way I see them off the list is if they're homesick (McBride) or they're steak knives in a trade deal (Brand/Eyre).

So yeah, that's where I'm at.
outside of thinking Dunkley wouldn't touch us with a ten foot pole, i'm ok with this.

But i'll take pick 9 to the draft happily - plenty to like with Cadman, Phillipou, Hewett, Jefferson or as a live trade asset on the night.
