outside of thinking Dunkley wouldn't touch us with a ten foot pole, i'm ok with this.

But i'll take pick 9 to the draft happily - plenty to like with Cadman, Phillipou, Hewett, Jefferson or as a live trade asset on the night.
Yeah, if Dunkley doesn't come then I'd be hoping someone like McKenzie drops, or maybe reach for a Hollands.

If McKenzie slips to 9 (lols given he'd have been StK NGA) i'd be stoked. He's my pick at 4 tbh. I like how hard he runs defensively. He's a nice size too. But i also haven't seen Tsatas play. And if we trade Parish, i wouldn't be opposed to Clark either.

You want to trade a one dimensional small inside midfielder, thus restoring a little bit of balance to our inside midfield and then replace him with... A one dimensional small inside midfielder.

personally i want McKenzie. But we really lack on-field leadership. Hence it won't be the end of the world :)

McKenzie - Wardlaw - Sheezel - Tsatas - Clark is how i'd approach 4

The introduction of Caldwell as a defensive (tagger) midfielder seemed to be a real turning point for Shiel in particular. No connivence we seemed to have more cohesion with Joe and Dylan playing together.

Hopefully we can grab a BIG body to help out in this regard and improve the mix we currently have.

I don't think our list is as bad as we showed, just need to tweak a few spots and that unfortunately starts with the midfield.

1) Parish v Shiel. Pick one moving forward and move the other one on as part of the rebuild.
I'd personally trade Parish, which i've come around on this year. He's gotta net us a top 10 pick + change to do it now vs. the potential top 6 pick next year. And use it to add to our pick + another if we can trade up and hit up 4x top 20 (Pick 4, Parish pick, trade up & Davey)

2) Im normally one loathe for projects, but the build of Perkins the mid needs to start in earnest. I feel he's wasting his career as a low impact HF. Get him fit enough to run games out through the middle. Kid is strong, will wear contact before he offloads if he has to and knows how to handle a ball under pressure. Don't think he's a Cripps/Oliver type, but there's a good mid with height

3) Draft Cam McKenzie. This kid looks like everything we don't have. Hard 2 way running, size, tough, natural. And continue to draft natural mids. The projects and want for flexibility has held us back a bit.

4) Tackling. Work on positioning, execution and making them stick.

Delist - Hird, Cutler, McDonagh, Waterman, Ham, maybe Stewart if he doesn’t want to be depth
Retiring - Smith, Hurley, AMT
Trade - Parish, Stringer
Stringer is the interesting one. Clearly has talent and needs a system that keeps him honest on performing to that level (Tigers, Dees)
One of the more watchable players when he's on, but he's too inconsistent and unlikely to be playing well when we get back to being a top 8 side again.

I think looking at a couple of leaders that can come in cheap would be good too - Ward and Mundy could play 2023 and possibly 2024 in Ward's case.
Give us some leaders to support Merrett as captain and train up Hobbs for the future.

Jhye Clark is far from one dimensional, that is strict hyperbole.

The best judges indicate he seems to be every bit the ball winner of Parish plus a manic pressure player and is the best leader in the draft by all reports.

I was taking the piss with the one dimensional thing.

However we shouldn't draft him because he's too ****ing small.

If we are adding Bytel and Robertson he isnt. Look beyond a soon to be 30yo Shiel and 28yo Merrett.

Clark: 180cm
Hobbs: 183cm
Caldwell: 183cm
Robertson: 185cm
Perkins: 187cm
Bytel: 189cm

That is not too small at all. We need to stop thinking short term and look to plan for 2-3 years time when Shiel is likely on the outer and Merrett is approaching 30 and more an outside runner than inside ball winner - which when we ar elikely to be good again

That midfield above is well balanced in size, 3 really strong leaders and plenty of versatility in playing other roles when not in the midfield with defensive pressure to boot.

In fairness I thought Robertson was 182

if you had the pick later to get a bigger mid to balance us out (or we somehow manage to convince Dunkley to come over via that pick) I think you'd have the conditions to consider.
But honestly, we should grab McKenzie at 4. Ill give some Tsatas vids a watch if I can find them so im not completely biased to one player.

Would love something like McKenzie (4), George (Parish pick), Keeler (trade 22 up), Davey (matched bid)

Big, hard running contested mid + small fwd + fwd/ruck (with a bit of x-factor) & a mid/fwd.
Add Ward and/or Mundy.

Really just leaves us with a bit of a gap with an experienced key defender and CHF, but we cop that and develop rather than contest for finals.

A good start for list management today. Cutler, Hird and McDonough gone. Smith, Hurley and AMT retired so that’s six spots opened up. I can see another 4-5 spots opening up with trades, free agency and further delistings. That would be a huge turnover, but I think it’s badly needed.

I'd get him purely for the leadership aspect. We need that more than anything else right now even if it means we end up with a handful of similar midfielders. I figure we can add a point of difference next year or the year after as Shiel starts to decline; and I think we're more likely to get the best out of our draftees if we're getting them into a club with solid leadership and culture.

This is exactly the issue. Every year we say "we can always get one next year" and we never do.

Yep agreed.
I would like to think Ham and possibly Waterman gets delisted and also the very real possibility Heppell leaves too.

And is one of the best leaders playing under 18 footy. Genuine hard working leader.
Same height as Parish in his draft year but 4kg heavier. Like Hobbs he will be a little bull who can extract the footy.
I have others I like but I am not saying no if we go after another good leader.

Worth noting the types of players delisted / retired already

Michael Hurley - KPD / KPF

Garat McDonagh - wingman /general def utility

Tom Cutler - wingman / general def utility

Tom Hird - small fwd / general fwd utility

Tippa - Small fwd

Devon Smith - small fwd / general fwd utility

------

Dyson Heppel - wingman / general def utility

Brayden Ham - wingman / general forward utility

Aaron Francis - defender / general def utility

Alec Waterman - small forward / general fwd utility

I want another midfielder or two as much as the next bloke but looking at the types we are moving on makes me wonder if we will go flanker types instead of what we all want and that is a big bodied midfielder.

Or do we go like the Pies and Tigers and go more endurance runners.

yeah, in saying that. The forward guys may very well already be on the list (Martin, Massimo, Cox rumoured to be playing KP [fwd?] more). The defence may very well already have the cattle with guys like Laverde, Ridley licences to play 3rd tall and not KP as done this year

hird is cat b so that’s not an actual list spot
-4 spots for the guys we picked up mid season and ssp

Curious to see what we do with all the reported cap space we'll have. There doesn't seem to be any obvious big money realistic targets at this stage so do they try and rejig a few contracts to front load them and target the year afters FA class? That would be my preference. I want us to hit the top end of the draft again rather than trade out picks.
