Umpires need more incentive, it chews up their entire day, and for what? $150, the league need to cough up some more dollars.
Old Milawa Muscat, money does not mean quality.
I would break down the current league umpires in 3 categories.
1. Played 20 years ago
2. Never played but umpired for 20 years
3. Umpiring for fitness
I'm not sh*t canning umpires, I cherish what we have presently.
Reserves have club umpires, depending on club they are typically an ex-player & absolutely command respect on the field.
To get ex-players to umpire at senior level, the qualification & time taken to achieve or be able to do this should be waived or seriously fast tracked(I have no idea of umpiring processes) they know the game already, most likely time poor but willling to put back for 3-4 hours on 1-2 Saturday's throughout the season.
How many clubs could call on 5-6 ex senior players to umpire 1 or 2 senior games throughout the regular season, get respect & do a reasonable job of officiating on the field? Then plus cash $.

Have there been any decent umpires who were ex players? I think the best umpires are just passionate about the game and have a better understanding of it than most players, they see it from a different lens. Ex players who throw their hat in the ring are usually helping out at twos level as club umpires and never progress.

So are we all happy with the fact average TDFL players can fetch more than the elite umpires in the region? Raising the salary for the men in white will raise the standard, like it or not, money talks and it will unearth a few hidden talents.

Let me get on your level.
They last wore white in 2012, a decade ago.
Green maggots.
I’m still ropable they changed the traditional attire, I don’t
condone the short socks players are sporting now either, It should be compulsory to tuck the shirt in and pull the long socks up, at least look like a footballer. I penned many many letters to the AFL about this, fell on deaf ears, surprise surprise, if it’s not on the woke agenda they don’t want to know about it.

The problem with some of the umpires, generally the average ones, they over complicate it, they get fixated on the weekly rule changes and silly technicalities that’s on display in league football, then they miss the basics. Keep it simple.

Not sure if this is a piss take. Tucked in jumpers is about 856th on the list for issues in country footy.

Isolated it is not important, but I’m sick of seeing traditional parts of the game destroyed little bit by little bit. Why not leave umpires in white? What the hells wearing ridiculous colours add ? Why change so many rules? Why shorten the length of the socks? The game evolved naturally and peaked in the 90s. The game was better when men had a bit of fur on the chest and strictly wore black boots.

Redcliffe will kick 20 this week, I’d love to see him back in the O&M next year, still young, maybe we could entice him to travel south a little further, have a kick in the brown and gold. I rate the kid highly.

I'll agree with you on a couple of things. There was never any issue with umpires in white, I never mistook them for a player in my life. Long socks probably not an issue either, easy to pull down if that's what you want. Never understood tucking in though, becomes untucked after the first contest and spend the rest of the game tucking it back in. Waste of time if you ask me.

Just reading Mitta have junior sides again, good for them, what did they do to get strong numbers again? How did they bounce back? Losing juniors is generally the beginning of the end.

Good to see the improvement from Rutherglen and Wahgunyah after the recession of Corowa-Rutherglen in 2023….. combined losing margin of 432 over the weekend. Yeah both clubs might fill sides each week, but I’d be confident in saying not 1 player from either club would play senior football for your Chiltern’s, Beechworth’s etc. Not many of them would even get a game in the reserve grade sides of the bushies and swans 😮

What’s your point? Rutherglen have been average for a decade and Wahgunyah the worst side the league has seen. You really think O&M players were all going to drop down a level just because it’s close? All of Corowa’s U/18 runner up team would be striving to play at the highest level, likewise with their senior list.

Hey RR,
I'm interested on your take with Rutherglen's 14s & 17s winning the first 3 rounds by 100 points or there abouts. The junior program there seems pretty solid? Or fill me in.

My opinion is that the junior comp in the tdfl is thinning out quite significantly, just like the upper Murray and ovens and king leagues did also and is nothing to hold your breath over. From the junior sides rutherglen have at their helm now, 60% of them won’t go on to play any level for of senior football at the club. There’s nothing in the area to keep the young blokes here , if they choose to study they’ll move to Melbourne/Geelong . Blokes won’t hang around unless they are happy to be working at Rivalea or Uncle Toby’s

What’s wrong with working at those factory’s for a crust? If you’re business minded and smart enough you can make a dollar doing just about anything. I’ve made lucrative coin doing my thing, against the tide I’ve ended up well ahead of the game. Wether it’s in football or life, you need to follow your heart, don’t fall for the mundane Matrix we’ve all been programmed to play a part in, crack in and fight against the grain, you might surprise yourself. But remember, it’s not for the faint hearted, there’s always set backs, you’ll soon find out what you’re made of, sink or swim? Your choice.

That's very deep for a TDFL forum. Some people just don't love playing footy that much that it dictates how they live their life.

Leather and Thread isn’t half the company and empire your brothers have built.

Rutherglen and Wahgunyah sat around preying on Corowa to crumble for their own future. The cluster doesn’t need clubs like Rutherglen and Wahgunyah , we need Corowa.

Time for the “brains trust’s” in charge at these clubs to do what’s best for the community and merge with corowa, or disappear

Back in my day if a town was thriving so too were the sporting clubs, you wouldn’t dare cross town to pull a guernsey on for a rival, sadly those times have passed. Corowa’s a thriving town, lots of houses going up, great community, and the best local talent going around, yet there’s a battling club, I’d love to see players who move away come back and play. Their club house needs to be raised 4 metres up, wringing out wet carpet amid a crises isn’t ideal.

What’s your gripe with the Rutherglen FC? I’m not sure they’d have the same juvenile view like you, they’d hate to see Corowa go, as much as everyone else in the area.

Just reading the Kiewa president “stands down” after 3 matches. Anyone got any inside intel? It’s not for the faint hearted being at the helm of a club, there’s times you’ll be getting pulled in every which way, staying calm and keeping a clear head is a must.

He has been in charge there for a while.
Could possibly be burnout
