Unless he does his knee or something, Cody will be in our Rd 1 side, so it’s a pointless conversation in this thread.
Besides, Cody had some artworks included in an exhibition and charity auction that was held 9 days before our first final

Proceeds went to Make A Wish foundation and several artists were involved.

Turning this somehow into evidence of Cody's lack of commitment or focus seems an extremely long bow.

Medieval England likes this.

But yeah I hate it when people reach ultra hard. They have to be like Inspector Gadget, with how long their arms must reach. Did he miss training because of the event? No! Did he get completely s**t faced for the event? No. Was it on the eve of the final? No.

So if he had the night off, what is required to do? Sit at home and do nothing? Because apparently being social on a week off football is unprofessional, but sitting on your ass at home doing nothing is professional? Like what?????

Did he play satisfactorily? No.

Imagine complaining about something that happened almost 12 weeks ago looks like it’s going to be a long summer

To be fair, some supporters still have a whinge about our 2017 and 18 seasons 😂

It is a strange one though. Would take a seriously psychotic coach to consider a players EF performance when choosing the side for the Rd 1 game 7 months later. They’d lose the players real quick.

It just blows my mind maybe it’s just me but once the season is done I get over the disappointment and move on.

Did the majority of the team play poorly? Yes! So why single him out?

Can you explain how an event a week before the final, on a night off, impacted his game? And how you know for sure it did impact his game? And what you think he should have been doing instead?

Not just to not play them r1, but to declare them trade material.

Also, when the team gets flogged in the middle (59 i50s to 39), it's a bit harsh to lay a heap of blame to those playing deep forward.

I didn't single him out, I included other EF under performers in my initial thread post, the subsequent discussion just ended up focusing on Cody.

It's not my job to explain Cody's underperformance, that's up to him. A player with that much talent turning in such a terribly ineffectual display in the biggest game of the year. It demands questioning, because he is a highly paid professional and it is his job. The distraction of putting on an art show is one potential answer, and that in itself is reason enough that it should have been avoided at that time of year.

As far as what he needs to do going forward? Firstly, conduct a thorough critical self-analysis of his own match performance, and everything he did in the lead up to the match. Then decide how he can avoid such a disaster happening again in future.

Let's not forget this is high level professional sport. That EF loss not only ended our run at a potential premiership, it also marked the end of several Bulldog\AFL careers.

You still going on about that?

We've already proven being pre-occupied midweek with an outlet away from footy has absolutely no bearing on your performance.

How long is it going to take you to build a bridge to get over it? Cody played poorly, so did many other players. Mentally we didn't turn up. Let's only field seven players for round one to let them earn their performance for round two. Is that what you'd like?

You have proven absolutely nothing.

Have you ever openly presented personal work to public scrutiny? There is no way it wasn’t a major distraction for the young bloke.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. His management should take a good look at themselves too. Someone should have helped the kid avoid kicking such an own goal.

Plenty of players turned up and gave their all in the EF. Cody wasn’t one of them for some reason. Some others who played substantially better than he did were even traded out of the club, but you think he should just get a free pass for some reason?

Apart from his first against Essendon, his finals record is poor, with his 2021 GF arguably even worse than his 2024 EF shocker. Just putting that GF game down as an aberration seemingly hasn’t helped him in subsequent finals.

All I’m suggesting is someone in the coaching group have a frank conversation with him after such a performance (hopefully this has already taken place), work through what they think went wrong and come up with some strategies to do better in future. It would be a bonus if this occurs in a manner that shows those outside the inner sanctum that he is proactively learning and improving in response.

Not too much to hope for I would have thought.

I actually really like the kid and genuinely want someone to help him get better.

Particularly a small forward that requires repeat entries to have a chance at impacting. The service was quite bad on the night. Hawks were hyped and we couldn't match their intensity.

Coffield Jones JOD
Dale Lobb Freijah
Williams Richards Poulter
Kennedy Naughton West
Jamarrah Darcy Weightman
English Bont Treloar

Bramble Sanders Libba Garcia

After round 22, 1974, and securing a finals spot for the first time in 13 years, almost the entire senior list went to a player's family holiday home at Phillip Island, and proceeded to get totally munted.

The next Saturday, Pies put us to the sword by a then record elim final margin of 69 points. I'm surprised they didn't sack the lot of them, 3 future Brownlow medallists included.

This club just accepts mediocrity as a default, always has. Personally, I'd use the captain as an example, and stand him down for round 1, as well as anyone in this year's elim who got a Sunscore below 5...

I think Bont should be dropped for Round 1. He needs to be held accountable for his poor finals performance. It’s clear that ever since he’s been working on his milk bar project that footy is not on his mind 24/7 and therefore we should drop him to teach him a lesson. If we let him play, we’re telling all the young players that you’re allowed to have a life outside of footy and that’s not what we want here

Davidson and Luke Kennedy. If we sign Brew though he'd probably be first though.

I haven't seen enough of him but does he have more to his game than his inside mid craft?

I'm not against signing him even if he is just Libba depth as an inside midfielder but I don't want us to sign him and then play him half-forward/wing if it's not his style, which we can be prone to do

Kennedy plays just about any midfield position inside or outside. I think getting inside the heads of our older midfield group this preseason will put him in a real good spot early on in the season.
